Modern Pool Heating

AquaCal Pool Heaters

AquaCal AutoPilot, Inc. builds electric pool heat pumps in St. Petersburg, Florida, and has done since 1981. The residential range is led by HeatWave SuperQuiet (SQ140R, SQ160R and SQ200R), with the TropiCal line below it and TropiCool chillers alongside. Every unit uses the patented ThermoLink pure titanium heat exchanger and ships PoolSync Wi-Fi built in. The current national warranty is 3 years parts and labor, years 4-5 limited parts, and a limited lifetime term on the titanium tubing.

AquaCal is a heat-pump specialist rather than a full pool equipment manufacturer, and that focus is the most useful thing to know about the brand. The company builds in St. Petersburg — the brochure carries the 2737 24th Street North, St. Petersburg, Florida address and the line "Producing quality heat pumps since 1981" — and it sits inside the employee-owned Team Horner group. For a Gulf Coast pool that means the factory is across the bay rather than across the country.

The residential line-up is led by HeatWave SuperQuiet, which AquaCal markets as its top-selling heat pump: SQ140R at 114,000 BTU/hr and SQ200R at 138,000 BTU/hr at the 80/80/80 test point, with the SQ160R between them, all covered by the same current national warranty. Below it sits the TropiCal family (T60, T70, T100 and T130), the HeatWave HW160R, and the TropiCool chillers (TC1000 and TC1500) for owners who want cooling only. SunPower, Water Source and the commercial Great Big Bopper round out the catalog, each with its own warranty document.

Two pieces of engineering define the brand. The first is the ThermoLink heat exchanger — patented, pure titanium, and designed so that it adds only 2 PSI of pressure drop at 45 gpm, which is what lets a variable-speed pump run at lower RPM while the heater is on. The second is PoolSync: the Wi-Fi antenna is embedded in the unit, so app control of heating, cooling and autotemp modes, remote diagnostics and real-time performance monitoring work with no added hardware, and a PoolSync Relay Center can take over the rest of the equipment pad. The SuperQuiet control itself is a weather-protected panel with a 24-character full-text display rather than a numeric code readout.

For Florida buyers, AquaCal's ICEBREAKER heat and cool option answers the late-summer complaint that northern pool owners never have, and the corrosion-proof cabinet with louvered panels over the evaporator coil is built for salt air. The warranty is the other reason the brand scores well here: three years of parts and labor, two more years of limited parts on the compressor, heat exchanger and evaporator coil, and a lifetime part-only warranty on the titanium tubing itself. None of it depends on PoolSync any longer — the 2025 document made the third year conditional on connecting the unit to the app within 30 days, and the 2026 documents dropped that. All of it depends on buying through an authorized dealer and having claims authorized in advance.

What AquaCal builds

HeatWave SuperQuiet

Electric heat pump

The flagship residential line: SQ140R (114,000 BTU/hr, COP 5.7 at 80/80/80), SQ160R and SQ200R (138,000 BTU/hr, COP 6.1), with ThermoLink pure titanium exchanger, ICEBREAKER heat and cool, built-in PoolSync Wi-Fi and a corrosion-proof cabinet. 30-70 gpm flow window and a 34 x 34 x 40 inch footprint.

HeatWave HW160R

Electric heat pump

A single HeatWave model carried alongside the SuperQuiet line and covered by the same current national heat pump warranty.

AquaCal's value line, currently T60, T70, T100 and T130, covered by the same current national warranty document as the SuperQuiet. Worth pricing against the SuperQuiet when budget matters more than the quietest cabinet or the largest capacity.

Chillers — TC1000 and TC1500 — for owners who want to bring pool temperature down rather than up, which is a real request on an unscreened Florida pool in August.

What we like

  • Built in St. Petersburg since 1981, by a manufacturer whose entire business is pool heat pumps. On the Gulf Coast that shortens both the parts chain and the technical-support chain.
  • The ThermoLink pure titanium heat exchanger is standard across the range and carries a limited lifetime part-only warranty on its titanium tubing — the right material and the right term for salt pools and coastal air.
  • Its low pressure drop (2 PSI at 45 gpm) is designed for variable-speed pumps, so you can keep the pump at low RPM while heating instead of turning it up to satisfy a flow switch.
  • PoolSync Wi-Fi is built in rather than sold as an accessory: app control of heating, cooling and autotemp modes, remote diagnostics and performance monitoring out of the box.
  • Three years of parts and on-site labor is a strong opening term, the current documents attach no PoolSync condition to the third year, and years 4-5 add limited parts coverage on the compressor, heat exchanger and evaporator coil.
  • ICEBREAKER heat and cool is available in the residential line, so the same unit can carry a pool through a January cold front and take the edge off it in August.

What to know before buying

  • Warranty coverage depends on the channel: it applies to units bought through an authorized dealer and installed in the contiguous United States, claims need prior authorization and a qualified technician, and non-OEM parts void it. Years 4-5 are parts only. AquaCal's two 2026 documents disagree on call-out fees: LTP0159 Rev. H, the one linked from aquacal.com, states a trip charge applies for service performed after year 1, while the April 2026 warranty card LTP19255 Rev A states trip and shop supply fees are waived during years 1-3 and may apply in years 4-5.
  • Model naming has shifted, and so did the warranty — twice. SQ145 and SQ166R were AquaCal's own previous designations: the superseded LTP0159 Rev G (May 2024) covers HeatWave SuperQuiet 120R, 125, 145, 166R and 225 and gave Florida installations five years parts and labor plus years 6-7 of limited parts. The 2025 document LTP17196 Rev A then gave the SQ140, SQ160 and SQ200 2 years parts and labor plus a third year only if the heat pump was connected to the PoolSync app within 30 days of installation, and the current LTP0159 Rev. H (02/26) covers SQ140R, SQ160R and SQ200R at three years plus years 4-5 with no PoolSync condition. Some retailer listings still quote the 2025 wording. Match the model number on the quote to the warranty document you are shown, and ask for it by its LTP number and revision.
  • Automation is AquaCal's own ecosystem. PoolSync is genuinely good, and the heater will take a heating/cooling mode signal from an external controller, but it is not a native member of a Pentair, Hayward or Jandy automation system.
  • Pricing sits in the upper mid-range for the category. A value-brand titanium heat pump with a five-year parts-and-labor warranty will often quote lower; what the premium buys is the service organization and the controls.
  • AquaCal's own website is now a client-rendered application that publishes little machine-readable specification detail, so the documents worth asking for by name are the brochure and the LTP-numbered warranty PDF for your exact model.

AquaCal questions

Where are AquaCal heat pumps made?

In St. Petersburg, Florida. The HeatWave SuperQuiet brochure carries the company address at 2737 24th Street North, St. Petersburg, Florida, and the line "Producing quality heat pumps since 1981". AquaCal AutoPilot is part of the employee-owned Team Horner group.

What is the current AquaCal warranty?

For HeatWave SuperQuiet SQ140R, SQ160R and SQ200R, HeatWave HW160R, TropiCal T60, T70, T100 and T130 and TropiCool TC1000 and TC1500 models bought through an authorized dealer and installed in the contiguous United States on or after January 1, 2025: 3 years parts and labor, years 4-5 limited parts on the compressor, heat exchanger and evaporator coil, and a lifetime part-only warranty on the ThermoLink titanium tubing. That is LTP0159 Rev. H (02/26), the document linked from aquacal.com, and it states a trip charge applies for service performed after year 1; the April 2026 warranty card LTP19255 Rev A says trip and shop supply fees are waived in years 1-3. Neither makes coverage conditional on PoolSync — the 2025 document that gave 2 years plus a third with a PoolSync connection has been replaced. Warranty terms subject to manufacturer requirements and registration.

What is ICEBREAKER and do I need it in Florida?

ICEBREAKER is AquaCal's heat and cool capability — the same unit can chill the pool as well as heat it, and AquaCal states it continues heating at freezing temperatures to minimize heat loss. In Florida the cooling side is the part that earns its keep: an unscreened pool in August frequently runs warmer than anyone wants to swim in.

Does AquaCal work with my pool automation?

It comes with its own: PoolSync Wi-Fi is built into the unit, and a PoolSync Relay Center can manage the rest of the pad. The heater can also connect to an external controller for heating and cooling mode. What it is not is a native device inside a Pentair, Hayward or Jandy system, so ask your installer how it will be switched if your pad is already one of those.
