Modern Pool Heating

Pool Equipment & Automation

The heater is one piece of the pad. We install and repair the pump that feeds it, the salt system that sanitizes the water, the automation that runs it all and the lights in the pool.

A heater only works as well as the pad around it. The pump has to deliver the flow the heater's manual calls for, the salt cell or chlorinator has to sit downstream of the heater, and if there's an automation panel, the heater has to be wired to it the way its manufacturer specifies. We install, replace and repair all of that equipment, not just the heater.

Swapping a single-speed pump for a variable-speed one is a common upgrade on an older pad. A variable-speed pump can run slowly for everyday filtration and faster only when the heater, solar or a cleaner needs the flow, which uses less electricity than a single-speed pump running at full speed all day. The one catch on a heated pool: the pump's heating schedule has to be programmed fast enough to satisfy the heater's flow switch.

We also diagnose and replace pool lights. A light that won't come on is often a wiring, connection or fixture problem rather than the bulb, and finding which one is the job. Pool lights sit underwater and are wired under the electrical code's pool rules, so it's work for a licensed contractor.

Why choose equipment & automation?

Pumps and variable-speed upgrades

Pump replacement and repair, including motor swaps on an existing pump and variable-speed upgrades set up to give your heater the flow it needs.

Pool salt systems

Salt chlorine generators sized to the pool and plumbed after the heater, where heater manufacturers require them, so freshly chlorinated water doesn't run through the heat exchanger.

Automation

New automation panels and heater connections to the panel you already have. Heaters connect differently (some through simple relay terminals, some through a data connection), so we check compatibility before you buy.

Pool lighting

Diagnosis and replacement of pool lights and fixtures, with the wiring checked and everything tested before we leave.

Equipment & Automation questions

Can I control my pool heater from my phone?

Often, yes, either through the heater's own Wi-Fi where it has it or through an automation system that controls the heater, pump and lights. Which route works depends on the heater: some connect to automation through simple relay terminals and some through a data connection. Our Ask Henry article on pool heater Wi-Fi and automation goes through the options.

Are variable-speed pumps worth it?

For most pools that run the pump many hours a day, they're worth pricing. A variable-speed pump can filter at a low speed and only speed up when something needs the flow, which uses less electricity and runs quieter than a single-speed pump at full speed. If you heat the pool, the heating speed has to be programmed high enough for the heater.

Can you fix pool lights that stopped working?

Yes. We diagnose pool lights that won't turn on, flicker or trip a breaker, and replace fixtures when that's the fix. The problem is often in the wiring, a connection or the fixture rather than the bulb, so the first step is finding out which.

Will a new pump or salt system work with my heater?

It should, as long as it's set up for the heater. The pump has to deliver at least the heater's minimum flow during heating, and a salt cell or chlorinator goes after the heater in the plumbing. We check both when we quote the job.
