Why homeowners consider it

  • Five years of parts and on-site labor: one of the strongest straightforward parts-and-labor warranty programs in the category. Many heat pump warranties pair a longer parts term with a shorter labor term; Built Right's current warranty page covers both for the same five years.
  • It is built and serviced in Punta Gorda, about an hour south of Sarasota. Built Right states that most service work in Florida is performed by its own factory technicians and advertises a 24-48 hour warranty response time — which, in a category where the wait for a board can decide your February, is the specification that actually matters.
  • The exchanger is titanium and the housing is a corrosion-free UV-resistant polymer, which is the right construction for salt pools, salt air and the barrier islands. The manual's own maintenance advice tells owners near the ocean or the Gulf to rinse the evaporator coil, which is the kind of guidance a Florida manufacturer writes.
  • Published efficiency is strong for a fixed-speed unit: 6.0 COP at the 80/80/80 test point on the BR135XW and 6.5 on the smaller BR115XW, all AHRI certified to AHRI Standard 1160, and the XW page carries Intertek ETL listing marks.
  • There is a heat and cool version in the same family. The BR135XW H/C is rated 130,000 BTU/hr at 80/80/80 with a 5.8 COP, so an owner who wants to chill an unscreened pool in August does not have to leave the line.

What to know before buying

  • The service story is the strongest part of this brand and the thing to check hardest if you are outside Florida. Built Right's own language is that most service work in the state of Florida will be provided by factory technicians; there is no national dealer-service network comparable to the big pro-channel brands, and the warranty sheet bound into the 2017-2018 owner's manual actually limits coverage to units installed within the State of Florida, while the current warranty page says the 50 United States. Ask which document applies to the unit you are quoted.
  • You cannot buy one directly. Built Right sells to licensed contractors only, with no direct sales to the public or to property managers, so the unit reaches you through whoever installs it.
  • The warranty has real conditions, and they come from two different documents. The current warranty page requires installation by a licensed and qualified contractor and maintained water chemistry, excludes damage from improper bonding, limits coverage to the first retail purchaser in the 50 United States, excludes refrigerant and other expendables, and gives commercial applications one year rather than five. The warranty sheet bound into the 2017-2018 owner's manual adds the conditions people actually get caught by: a warranty form submitted within thirty days of purchase, prior authorization for every claim, work performed by a Factory Authorized Service Agent — and its own opening line, that the warranty applies to models installed within the State of Florida. Ask in writing which document governs your unit.
  • There is no app. Automation is a two-wire external controller connection for a pool/spa remote or a remote thermostat. If your pad is built around Pentair IntelliCenter, Hayward Omni or Jandy iAquaLink, the heater will be switched by the system rather than appearing in it.
  • Built Right publishes very little electrical detail online — the manual tells the installer to read the required breaker size off the unit's data label. Have the electrician size the circuit from the nameplate rather than from a web page, and confirm the service can carry it.
  • It is a fixed-speed heat pump with published limits. The control enters a defrost cycle below 48°F ambient and displays FS, and the manual says operating below 45°F is not advisable because there is not enough heat in the air. On the Gulf Coast that is a handful of mornings a year, but it is not a cold-climate machine.

Warranty, term by term

The warranty only matters on the parts that actually fail. Here is how this one splits up.

Parts
5 years
Labor
5 years on-site labor

Built Right's current warranty page states five years from the date of retail purchase on all Built Right branded heat pump pool heaters, covering parts and on-site labor, limited to the first retail purchaser and non-transferable. That page is issued in Fluidra's name — it opens "Zodiac Pool Systems LLC, a Fluidra company, warrants all Built Right branded heat pump pool heaters" — and much of its wording, including the 50-United-States sentence and the commercial-application definition, is the same template language Jandy's limited warranty uses. Conditions on that page: installation by a licensed and qualified contractor, maintained water chemistry, bonding failures excluded, refrigerant and other expendables excluded, freezing and corrosion caused by or related to weather, climate, improper equipment placement, roof run-off, sprinklers or irrigation excluded, negligence and acts of God excluded, transportation and trip charges the owner's responsibility, and commercial applications warranted for one year. A separate set of conditions comes from the warranty sheet bound into the 2017-2018 owner's manual: a warranty registration form submitted within thirty days of purchase, prior authorization for every claim, and repairs performed by a Factory Authorized Service Agent. That same sheet opens by limiting the warranty to models installed within the State of Florida, where the current page says the 50 United States. Confirm in writing which document governs your unit.

Why the heat exchanger matters

The heat exchanger is the part of a pool heater that actually moves heat into the water, and what it is made of decides how long the heater survives Florida water chemistry. Here is what the four materials mean in practice.

Copper
The traditional material and the cheapest to build. It transfers heat well and is fine on a well-balanced chlorine pool, but it is the least forgiving of low pH, high chlorine and salt. On the Gulf Coast it is usually the first component to fail.
Cupro-nickel
Copper alloyed with nickel. It gives up a little heat transfer in exchange for much better resistance to unbalanced water chemistry and salt. On gas heaters this is the upgrade worth having in Florida, and some manufacturers now ship it as standard.
NiTek (nickel alloy)
A nickel-alloy exchanger used on some gas heaters as a corrosion-resistant alternative to copper. Positioned between cupro-nickel and titanium in both durability and price.
TitaniumThis heater
Effectively immune to pool water chemistry, including salt. It is the standard on quality pool heat pumps and the reason a heat pump can sit on a salt pool for years without exchanger trouble. It is expensive, which is why you rarely see it on gas heaters.

Whatever the material, plumbing order matters just as much: a chlorinator or salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream.

How we scored it

MPH Equipment Score — 4.5/5How we rate heaters
  • Warranty takes the full 5: parts and on-site labor run for the same five years, and in Florida the work is done by the manufacturer's own technicians rather than a third-party network.
  • Titanium exchanger in a corrosion-free polymer housing is the right construction for salt pools and coastal air, and Built Right covers the exchanger for the full warranty term.
  • COP 6.0 at 80/80/80 on the BR135XW and 6.5 on the BR115XW are strong published numbers for fixed-speed units, held just short of a 5 because the line has no inverter option and publishes little supporting data.
  • Serviceability is excellent inside Florida and unproven outside it — factory technicians and a claimed 24-48 hour warranty response locally, but no comparable national service network, and the units are only sold through licensed contractors.
  • Controls are the weak spot: a competent digital control and a dry-contact external controller connection, but no app, no Wi-Fi and no published automation integration.
  • Value is strong — a five-year parts-and-labor warranty and a titanium exchanger at a mid-range price tier — which is what holds the total at the comparison guide's 4.5 (Florida) starter score.

BR135XW questions

Which XW model fits my pool?

The line is short: the BR115XW at 117,000 BTU/hr, the BR135XW at 135,000, and the BR135XW H/C at 130,000 with cooling, all at the 80/80/80 test point. Size it on surface area, exposure and the temperature you actually want rather than on gallons — and remember output falls to 82,000 BTU/hr on the BR135XW when the air is 50°F, which is the condition that really sets the size.

How is it wired and plumbed?

208-230V single phase, with the breaker sized from the unit's data label, conduit run up through the base into the control box, and a bonding lug below the control panel — Built Right voids the warranty if the system is not properly bonded. Plumbing is 2 inch PVC unions in the order pump, filter, heater, chlorinator, pool, with 45 gpm through the heater recommended.

Is it safe on a salt water pool?

The exchanger is titanium and the housing is a corrosion-free polymer, which is the combination you want on a salt pool. The chlorinator or salt cell has to be the last item before the water returns to the pool, which is exactly how Built Right's manual specifies the piping sequence.

Can it work with my pool automation?

Indirectly. There is no app or Wi-Fi control; instead, two remote wires from an external controller connect to the heater's control, so a pool/spa remote or a remote thermostat can switch it. If you want the heater to appear on your phone, this is not the unit for that job.

Does the warranty really cover labor for five years?

Built Right's current warranty page says five years from retail purchase, parts and on-site labor. The conditions matter, and they are split across two documents: the current page requires a licensed and qualified contractor and maintained chemistry and excludes bonding failures, while the warranty sheet bound into the 2017-2018 owner's manual adds a registration form within thirty days, prior authorization for every claim and repairs by a Factory Authorized Service Agent. Transportation and trip charges are excluded, and commercial installations get one year.
