Why homeowners consider it
- It is the same platform as the heat-only HP21405T with a reversing valve added, so you get 135,000 BTU/hr of heating at 80°F air / 80% RH / 80°F water and a COP of 5.7 — and the ability to pull heat back out of the pool in late summer.
- Hayward states it chills down to 40°F, which puts cold-plunge territory within reach as well as simply taking the edge off a pool that has been sitting at bath temperature since June.
- The onboard control has a genuine AUTO mode: set a target and the unit decides whether to heat or cool to hold it, rather than making you switch modes twice a year.
- Titanium condenser on the water side and a TCP-coated microchannel coil on the air side, with Hayward's 2026 warranty covering the titanium tube for 10 years on in-ground units.
- Warranty is 5 years parts and 2 years field labor as standard under Hayward's 2026 Expert Line terms, extended to 3 years field labor through a Hayward Rewards dealer.
What to know before buying
- Electrically it is the same demand as the heat-only version: 230V single phase, 42.5 A minimum circuit ampacity, 50 A recommended breaker, 70 A maximum overcurrent protection. Check the panel before you fall in love with the idea.
- Cooling is not free. Running the unit in reverse costs the same kind of electricity as heating, and on a screened lanai with little air movement the effect on the water is slower than people expect.
- Clearances are the same and they are not optional: 12 inches around the perimeter, 24 to 36 inches at the front for service, an unobstructed top with 72 inches under any overhang, and 60 inches from the pool or spa wall. Hayward's manual prohibits installing it in a fully enclosed space.
- Flow has to sit between 30 and 75 GPM, with 60 GPM recommended for this size, and Hayward states damage from flow outside that window is not covered. An external bypass assembly is part of the installation, not an accessory.
- Hayward does not publish a cooling capacity figure for this model in its specification table, so there is no honest BTU number to compare against other heat/cool units. Ask any dealer who quotes you one where it comes from.
- Warranty coverage depends on the channel: the W3-prefixed version sold online is an Open Line SKU with 1 year parts only and no labor coverage.
Warranty, term by term
The warranty only matters on the parts that actually fail. Here is how this one splits up.
- Parts
- 5 years
- Labor
- 2 years field labor (3 years when sold by a Hayward Rewards dealer)
- Heat exchanger
- 10 years on the titanium tube (in-ground)
Hayward's 2026 Expert Line residential terms list in-ground heat pumps separately from the rest of the line: 5 years parts and 2 years field labor as standard, extended to 3 years field labor when the unit is sold by a Hayward Rewards dealer, with the titanium tube covered for 10 years. Hayward states its limited warranties apply only to product bought from Hayward or a Hayward authorized seller, and the W3-prefixed version of this unit is an Open Line SKU carrying 1 year parts only with no labor coverage. Heat-exchanger damage caused by inadequate flow, unbalanced water chemistry or sanitizer dosed upstream of the heater is excluded. Professional installation and authorized-channel requirements may apply.
Why the heat exchanger matters
The heat exchanger is the part of a pool heater that actually moves heat into the water, and what it is made of decides how long the heater survives Florida water chemistry. Here is what the four materials mean in practice.
- Copper
- The traditional material and the cheapest to build. It transfers heat well and is fine on a well-balanced chlorine pool, but it is the least forgiving of low pH, high chlorine and salt. On the Gulf Coast it is usually the first component to fail.
- Cupro-nickel
- Copper alloyed with nickel. It gives up a little heat transfer in exchange for much better resistance to unbalanced water chemistry and salt. On gas heaters this is the upgrade worth having in Florida, and some manufacturers now ship it as standard.
- NiTek (nickel alloy)
- A nickel-alloy exchanger used on some gas heaters as a corrosion-resistant alternative to copper. Positioned between cupro-nickel and titanium in both durability and price.
- TitaniumThis heater
- Effectively immune to pool water chemistry, including salt. It is the standard on quality pool heat pumps and the reason a heat pump can sit on a salt pool for years without exchanger trouble. It is expensive, which is why you rarely see it on gas heaters.
Whatever the material, plumbing order matters just as much: a chlorinator or salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream.
How we scored it
- Warranty is 5 years parts, 2 years field labor and 10 years on the titanium tube, discounted half a point because both the labor term and Open Line eligibility depend on the sales channel.
- Durability scores a full 5: titanium condenser, TCP-coated microchannel coil, and manufacturer guidance written for oceanfront installs.
- Heating performance matches the heat-only model at a COP of 5.7 and holds 4.0 at the 50°F test point. It is a fixed-speed compressor, not an inverter, which keeps it at 4.5.
- Serviceability benefits from Hayward's Florida parts network and a published display code index; the microchannel platform and the added reversing valve are newer ground for independent techs.
- Controls take the same half-point deduction as the rest of the line — two-wire relays and an Omni system rather than native app control — offset slightly by a genuinely useful AUTO mode on the unit itself.
- Value is a 4.5: heat and chill from a mainstream brand with a 5-year parts term is a fair deal, but Hayward publishing no cooling capacity makes it harder to price the chill side against competitors.

HP31405T questions
How much can it actually cool the pool?
Hayward states it chills down to 40°F, but it does not publish a cooling capacity in BTU/hr in its specification table, so we will not put a number on it. In practice a heat/chill unit takes several degrees off a Florida pool over a day or two rather than chilling it on demand, and it works best overnight when the air is cooler.
What is the difference between the HP31405T and the HP21405T?
The HP31405T adds a reversing valve so it can cool as well as heat, plus a cooling relay on terminal J28 and HEAT, COOL and AUTO modes on the display. Heating capacity is a shade lower at 135,000 BTU/hr against 138,000, the COP is the same at 5.7, and it is 7 pounds heavier.
Will it work on a salt water pool?
Yes. The water-side condenser is titanium, which is the right material for a salt pool. The salt cell has to be plumbed downstream of the heat pump; Hayward's manual is explicit that exchanger damage from improper sanitizer addition or unbalanced water chemistry is not covered.
Can I control it from my phone or my pool automation?
Through an automation system, yes. The unit takes dry two-wire relays — heating on J7, cooling on J28 — which is how a Hayward Omni system drives it. There is no Wi-Fi or app built into the heat pump itself.
What does the warranty actually cover?
Hayward's 2026 Expert Line terms give in-ground heat pumps 5 years parts and 2 years field labor, extended to 3 years field labor through a Hayward Rewards dealer, with the titanium tube covered for 10 years. The W3-prefixed version sold online is an Open Line SKU with 1 year parts only and no labor.
Do you install heat and cool heat pumps in Sarasota?
Yes. Heat/cool units are a common request here, because a Gulf Coast pool that needs heating in February often needs cooling in August. We install and service them throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida. The comparison content is written for pool owners anywhere; the installation offer is local.
Is the HP31405T right for your pool?
We install and service pool heating in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida. If you are outside that area, the comparison above is still yours to use — ask your local contractor the same questions.
