| Clearances | 24" service access at the front, 12" on all other sides, 5 ft clear above if under a cover or overhang, 6" from the house wall, 5 ft from the inside wall of the pool or spa unless separated by a 5 ft barrier. Outdoor use only. |
| Operating limits | Will not heat above 104°F or cool below 45°F. May enter a defrost cycle around 50°F air; if the defrost stop temperature is not reached within 15 minutes the unit shuts down and displays a Low Ambient Temp alarm. |
| Certification | AHRI certified to Standard 1160; ETL listed; CEC listed for California Title 20 |
| Dimensions and weight | 38.7" x 30.7" x 45.5" per the Heat Pump Dimensions table in the installation guide; 320 lb shipping weight and a 43" x 34" x 46" shipping size (the 2025-2026 catalog lists a 344 lb carton weight for the same part numbers, a Pentair-internal conflict) |
| Water chemistry limits | Free chlorine 1.0-3.0 ppm, pH 7.4-7.6, total alkalinity 80-100 ppm (100-120 ppm with dichlor, trichlor, chlorine gas or bromine), calcium hardness 200-400 ppm, cyanuric acid 30-50 ppm, TDS under 2,000 ppm, copper 0 ppm. Pentair states that failing to hold these may void the warranty. |
| Controls and automation | LCD control board with full-word messages instead of numeric codes; independent pool and spa setpoints; heat, cool and auto modes; run timer; keypad lockout. RS-485 serial control with IntelliTouch or EasyTouch on software 1.11 or higher; all other automation packages use the relay remote dry-contact terminals, which is also how Pentair's IntelliConnect guide wires a heat pump. |
Why homeowners consider it
- It heats and it cools. At the AHRI 80/80/80 test point Pentair publishes 140,000 BTU/hr of heating at COP 5.6 and 71,000 BTU/hr of cooling at COP 4.1 — so the same unit that warms the pool in February can take the edge off it in August.
- The heat exchanger is 100% titanium and Pentair backs it with a lifetime warranty. The compressor carries 10 years parts and labor. Those two components are the expensive failures on a heat pump, and both terms run well past the unit's 2-year base warranty.
- It holds useful efficiency down the range: COP 5.4 at the 80°F air / 63% RH point and COP 4.0 at the 50°F air low test point, all AHRI certified rather than manufacturer-estimated.
- The cabinet is a long-life corrosion-resistant composite rather than painted steel, which is the right call on a barrier-island or waterfront pad.
- A thermostatic expansion valve rather than a fixed orifice, plus an automatic defrost feature that senses refrigerant temperature, keeps output usable across a wider range of conditions.
What to know before buying
- The electrical service is the real constraint. Pentair specifies 208-230 V single phase, a minimum circuit ampacity of 43 A, a recommended 50 A fuse and a 70 A maximum breaker, and warns that voltage dropping below 208 V may damage the heat pump and void the warranty. Older Florida panels often need work first.
- It needs air and space: 24 inches of service access at the front, 12 inches on every other side, 5 feet of clear height if it sits under a cover or overhang, 6 inches from the house wall, and 5 feet from the pool or spa wall unless a 5-foot barrier separates them. It is certified for outdoor use only.
- Water flow has to land between 30 GPM and 120 GPM, with 50 psi maximum working pressure. Above 120 GPM a bypass is required.
- Automation is not as clean as the MasterTemp's. Pentair's UltraTemp manual documents RS-485 control with IntelliTouch and EasyTouch on software version 1.11 or higher and says all other automation packages use the dry-contact relay remote terminals. IntelliConnect wires to those dry contacts too, per Pentair's own IntelliConnect guide.
- Pentair publishes a water chemistry table and states plainly that failing to hold those ranges may void the warranty: free chlorine 1.0-3.0 ppm, pH 7.4-7.6, calcium hardness 200-400 ppm, TDS under 2,000 ppm and copper at 0 ppm.
- The base unit warranty is only 2 years parts and labor. The 10-year compressor and lifetime exchanger terms are excellent, but the fan motor, board and reversing valve are on the 2-year term.
Warranty, term by term
The warranty only matters on the parts that actually fail. Here is how this one splits up.
- Parts
- 2 years
- Labor
- 2 years
- Compressor
- 10 years parts and labor
- Heat exchanger
- Lifetime on the titanium heat exchanger
Pentair's warranty page lists the UltraTemp High-Performance Heat Pump at 2 years parts and labor, the UltraTemp compressor at 10 years and the UltraTemp titanium heat exchanger at lifetime — which matches the owner's comparison guide and the UltraTemp brochure's own claim of ten-year compressor parts and labor plus a lifetime titanium exchanger warranty. Full coverage requires installation by a qualified professional who charges a fee; a heat pump bought from an internet retailer is covered for 1 year parts only with no labor. Registration is required. All UltraTemp models are TradeGrade, Pentair's professional-channel line, so authorized-dealer and professional-installation conditions apply.
Why the heat exchanger matters
The heat exchanger is the part of a pool heater that actually moves heat into the water, and what it is made of decides how long the heater survives Florida water chemistry. Here is what the four materials mean in practice.
- Copper
- The traditional material and the cheapest to build. It transfers heat well and is fine on a well-balanced chlorine pool, but it is the least forgiving of low pH, high chlorine and salt. On the Gulf Coast it is usually the first component to fail.
- Cupro-nickel
- Copper alloyed with nickel. It gives up a little heat transfer in exchange for much better resistance to unbalanced water chemistry and salt. On gas heaters this is the upgrade worth having in Florida, and some manufacturers now ship it as standard.
- NiTek (nickel alloy)
- A nickel-alloy exchanger used on some gas heaters as a corrosion-resistant alternative to copper. Positioned between cupro-nickel and titanium in both durability and price.
- TitaniumThis heater
- Effectively immune to pool water chemistry, including salt. It is the standard on quality pool heat pumps and the reason a heat pump can sit on a salt pool for years without exchanger trouble. It is expensive, which is why you rarely see it on gas heaters.
Whatever the material, plumbing order matters just as much: a chlorinator or salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream.
How we scored it
- Ten years parts and labor on the compressor and a lifetime term on the titanium exchanger cover the two components that actually end a heat pump's life. The score stops short of 5 because the rest of the unit — fan motor, board, reversing valve — sits on a 2-year term.
- A 100% titanium exchanger in a composite cabinet is the correct specification for salt water and coastal air, and there is nothing better available. Full marks.
- COP 5.6 at the AHRI 80/80/80 point with a certified 4.0 at the 50°F low test point is strong, and the cooling side is genuinely useful in a Florida August rather than a token feature.
- Serviceability is good rather than excellent: Pentair parts move quickly in this market, but heat pump work needs a refrigeration-certified technician and a compressor swap is never a same-day repair.
- Controls lose a point against Pentair's own MasterTemp. RS-485 works with IntelliTouch and EasyTouch on software 1.11 or later, but Pentair's manual sends every other automation package — including IntelliConnect — to the dry-contact relay terminals, which is on/off control only.
- Value is solid for the category: you are paying an upper-mid price for heat, cool, titanium and a 10-year compressor.

UltraTemp 140 H/C questions
What does the H/C suffix mean?
Heat and Cool. The UltraTemp 140 is heat-only; the UltraTemp 140 H/C is the reverse-cycle version that can also chill the pool. Pentair publishes 140,000 BTU/hr of heating at COP 5.6 and 71,000 BTU/hr of cooling at COP 4.1 at the 80/80/80 test point.
How big a pool will 140,000 BTU/hr heat?
It covers most large residential Gulf Coast pools comfortably. Surface area, wind exposure, whether the pool is screened and the temperature you actually want matter more than gallons, which is why we size a heat pump on site rather than from a chart. Remember a heat pump is designed to hold a temperature, not to chase one from cold in an afternoon.
Will it work on a salt water pool?
Yes — the exchanger is 100% titanium, which is exactly the material for salt. Pentair also publishes a water chemistry table it expects you to stay inside, including copper at 0 ppm and TDS under 2,000 ppm, and says failing to hold those ranges may void the warranty. The salt cell belongs downstream of the heat pump.
Can I control it from my Pentair automation?
Partly. Pentair's UltraTemp manual documents RS-485 serial control with IntelliTouch and EasyTouch Control Systems on software version 1.11 or higher, where the automation overrides the heat pump's own setpoint. Every other automation package, including IntelliConnect, connects to the relay remote dry-contact terminals instead, which switches the unit on and off but does not transfer setpoints.
How cold can it get before the heat pump stops working?
Pentair says the UltraTemp may enter a defrost cycle when air temperatures are around 50°F, and if the defrost stop temperature is not reached within 15 minutes the unit shuts down and displays a Low Ambient Temp alarm. On the Gulf Coast that is a handful of nights a year, which is why heat pumps work well here.
Do you install Pentair heat pumps in Sarasota?
Yes. We install and service Pentair UltraTemp heat pumps throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida. The comparison content on this page is written for pool owners anywhere; the installation offer is local.
