GulfStream HE Series vs Hayward HeatPro Pool Heat Pumps
GulfStream HE Series and Hayward HeatPro MCHX pool heat pumps compared on BTU, COP, titanium exchangers, warranty, heat and cool, controls and price tier.
Updated September 17, 2026 · Affordable Solar & Pool Heating, LLC · Owner/operator Henry Manna
These are titanium-exchanger heat pumps in the same class, and the numbers line up almost exactly: the heat-only GulfStream HE150-RA and Hayward HP21405T are both rated 138,000 BTU/hr at 80/80/80, and the heat/cool HE150-TA and HP31405T are both 135,000. Output is not the decision.
GulfStream publishes the better efficiency and the longer parts term — COP 6.0 against Hayward's 5.7, with 7 years parts and 2 years labor — and builds its units in North Fort Myers, Florida. Hayward answers with 5 years parts, 2 years field labor, 10 years on the titanium tube, a published low-temperature capacity, and parts in every Florida town.
Buy GulfStream for efficiency and coverage on paper. Buy Hayward if you run Omni automation or want the brand your service company stocks. Pick a TA or Heat+Chill model only if your pool overheats: both give up about 3,000 BTU/hr of heating to do it.

Where they actually differ
Capacity and efficiency at the same test point
Both manufacturers rate their units at the industry 80/80/80 point — 80°F air, 80°F water, 80% relative humidity — which makes this a rare comparison where the headline numbers are directly comparable. GulfStream's HE150-RA and Hayward's HP21405T are both 138,000 BTU/hr; the reverse-cycle HE150-TA and HP31405T are both 135,000. Inside each line the heat/cool model gives up about 3,000 BTU/hr to its heat-only sibling, because the reversing valve and the extra refrigerant plumbing are in the way.
The separation is in efficiency. GulfStream publishes a COP of 6.0 at 80/80/80 for both HE150 units in this table — 6.1 on the smallest HE110-RA — and states that all of them meet or exceed COP 4.0 at the AHRI low test point (50°F air, 63% humidity, 80°F water). Hayward publishes 5.7 at 80/80/80, 5.5 at 80/63/80 and 4.0 at 50/63/80. Roughly speaking, GulfStream returns about 5% more heat per kilowatt-hour under the rating conditions.
Hayward gives you one number GulfStream does not: capacity at the low test point. Both HeatPro models are published at 82,000 BTU/hr at 50°F air, which is a far more useful figure on a January morning in Sarasota than the 80°F rating everyone advertises. GulfStream states a COP floor at that test point but publishes no capacity to go with it, so we cannot print one.
Warranty: seven years of parts against ten years of exchanger
GulfStream publishes 7 years parts and 2 years labor on the sell sheet, the GulfStream product page and each SKU page, and the sell sheet adds that there are no trip charges during the labor period. There is no separate heat-exchanger term — the titanium exchanger sits under the 7-year parts warranty.
There is a real conflict in that claim and we are not going to paper over it. Pentair's own cross-brand warranty table lists GulfStream Heat Pump at 2 years and GulfStream Heat Pump (Parts) at 3 years, which contradicts the sell sheet and the product pages. We could not reconcile the two documents, so get the applicable terms in writing before you buy, and register the unit.
The purchase channel matters on the GulfStream side too, and Pentair states the rule plainly on the warranty page that lists the brand: the published in-ground term runs only when the equipment is bought from a brick-and-mortar retailer, pool builder or pool service company and installed by a qualified professional who charges a fee for the work. Buy the same heat pump from an internet retailer and Pentair covers it for 1 year parts only, with no labor, whatever term the sell sheet carries.
Hayward's 2026 Expert Line terms give in-ground heat pumps 5 years parts and 2 years field labor, extended to 3 years field labor when the unit is sold by a Hayward Rewards dealer, with the titanium tube covered for 10 years. That 10-year term covers the component most likely to end the unit's life. The catch is the channel: the W3-prefixed version of the same heat pump sold online is an Open Line SKU with 1 year parts only and no labor at all.
So the honest summary is that GulfStream publishes 7 years on parts against Hayward's 5, Hayward publishes 10 years on the titanium tube where GulfStream has no separate exchanger term, and both depend on where you buy. Neither term survives a purchase from the wrong channel.
Corrosion: titanium either way, but the cabinets differ
All four units in this table use a titanium water-side exchanger, which is the specification you want on a salt pool because there is no copper in the water path. On the water side, this comparison is a tie.
The difference is what surrounds it. GulfStream puts the exchanger in a UV-stabilized ABS cabinet with a 2-inch full-flow water path, so there is no steel shell to rust out on a barrier-island equipment pad. Hayward's answer is on the air side: a microchannel evaporator coated with its Trivalent Chromium Process, which Hayward positions as corrosion protection and which it says cuts braze joints by 85% against a conventional coil. Braze joints are where refrigerant leaks start, so that is a real durability argument rather than a finish.
Whichever you buy, plumbing order decides more than the metal does. The salt cell or chlorinator has to sit downstream of the heat pump, never upstream — GulfStream asks for a check valve between the chlorinator and the unit, and Hayward's manual states plainly that exchanger damage from improper sanitizer addition or unbalanced water is not covered.
Controls and automation
Neither heat pump has Wi-Fi or an app of its own, and any dealer who tells you otherwise is describing an automation system rather than the heater. Both join a system through dry contacts.
GulfStream is the more limited of the two. Its manual states the heat pump cannot be connected to automation systems over RS-485, and Pentair publishes no app or Wi-Fi control for the line. An AquaLink, AquaLogic or Compool system can switch it on and off and hand it a setpoint through the remote thermostat terminals, and on a TA model remote chilling needs a second spare dry-contact relay — a relay that sends voltage will damage the heat pump's transformer.
Hayward takes a two-wire relay on terminal J7, and the Heat+Chill HP31405T adds a cooling relay on J28, which is how both units join a Hayward Omni control system. It is still a relay rather than a data connection, but if the pad is already Omni you get app control of the heat pump as part of the system.
On the unit itself the comparison is closer than the automation story suggests. GulfStream's LCD reports status and faults in plain language rather than numeric codes and carries separate pool and spa setpoints, a spa timer and a keypad lockout. Hayward publishes a display code index and gives the HP31405T HEAT, COOL, AUTO and REMOTE modes, so the Heat+Chill unit can hold one target and decide for itself which way to run.
Cooling: what each manufacturer will put in writing
Both brands sell a reverse-cycle version, and neither publishes a cooling capacity in BTU/hr. That is worth knowing before you compare quotes, because it means nobody can honestly tell you how fast either one will chill your pool.
Hayward does publish a floor: it states the HP31405T chills down to 40°F, which is cold-plunge territory rather than a pool specification. GulfStream publishes neither a capacity nor a minimum temperature for the HE150-TA, and its installation manual is explicit that cooling is for the pool only, never a spa.
GulfStream's heat/cool models do get one thing the heat-only units do not: reverse-cycle (hot gas) defrost, which the manual lists as a heat/cool-model feature and which allows operation in the mid-30s°F. Both RA and TA units otherwise enter a defrost cycle below 48°F ambient and will not run below 35°F. Hayward publishes an air operating range of 40 to 115°F with an automatic defrost cycle on both models.
In practice a reverse-cycle heat pump takes the top few degrees off a pool that has drifted into the high 80s or low 90s, overnight, when the air it is dumping heat into is coolest. If your pool is screened or shaded, the heat-only model is both cheaper and rated 3,000 BTU/hr higher.
The pad, the panel and the service call
Electrically the Hayward asks for more. Both HeatPro models specify 230V single phase with a minimum circuit ampacity of 42.5 A, a recommended 50 A breaker and a maximum overcurrent protection of 70 A. GulfStream runs on 208-230V single phase at 40 minimum circuit amps for the HE150-TA and 37 for the HE150-RA, both on a 50 A maximum breaker. On an older Florida panel that difference occasionally decides whether the job includes a service upgrade.
Flow and clearance requirements are similar but not identical. GulfStream wants 30 to 70 GPM with 45-50 GPM optimal, 12 inches of clearance on each side and 4 feet above, outdoor only. Hayward wants 30 to 75 GPM with 60 GPM recommended for this size, 12 inches around the perimeter, 24 to 36 inches at the front for service, 72 inches under any overhang and 60 inches from the pool or spa wall. Both manufacturers prohibit installation in an enclosed space, and both exclude damage caused by flow outside the published window.
One practical detail people are not warned about: Hayward's manual says a HeatPro can produce three to five gallons of condensate an hour in humid conditions, and GulfStream states up to three gallons an hour. That is normal, it is not a leak, and the pad has to drain.
Serviceability splits the way you would expect. GulfStream units are built by G&F Manufacturing in North Fort Myers, about two hours down I-75 from us, which shortens the parts chain — but warranty work has to go through an authorized service center. Hayward parts are stocked in every Florida town and most technicians here have opened a HeatPro, though the microchannel coil is a newer platform with fewer independent repair paths than a conventional finned coil.
Which one for which job
The same six questions we would ask on a site visit, answered for these products.
If you need
Fast spa heating
Our pick
Neither — a gas heater
Why
No heat pump heats a spa quickly: GulfStream's own benchmark is an average rise of about 1°F per hour under ideal conditions, so for spa-on-demand you want a 400,000 BTU gas heater instead.
If you need
Everyday Florida pool heating
Our pick
Why
Both HeatPro models publish 82,000 BTU/hr at 50°F air where GulfStream publishes no low-temperature capacity at all, and that January figure is what decides how the pool feels; the heat-only HP21405T matches GulfStream's 138,000 BTU/hr at 80/80/80 and is rated 3,000 BTU/hr above the Heat+Chill HP31405T.
If you need
Heat and cool
Our pick
Why
It is the only heat/cool model in this table whose manufacturer publishes anything about the cooling side — Hayward states it chills down to 40°F — and its AUTO mode holds one setpoint and swaps direction on its own.
If you need
Premium efficiency
Our pick
Why
COP 6.0 at 80/80/80 against Hayward's 5.7, at the highest output in either line (138,000 BTU/hr) and on a 50 A maximum breaker.
If you need
Corrosion-resistant exchanger
Our pick
Why
All four units use a titanium water-side exchanger, so the tiebreaker is the shell around it, and GulfStream's UV-stabilized ABS cabinet has no steel to rust in salt air — the heat-only HE150-RA is the same cabinet and the same exchanger if you do not need cooling.
If you need
Automation ecosystem
Our pick
Why
Its J7 heating and J28 cooling relays put it on a Hayward Omni system, while GulfStream's manual states its units cannot be connected over RS-485 and Pentair publishes no app for the line.

Common questions
Is GulfStream still its own brand now that Pentair owns it?
It is a Pentair product line. The spec sheet, sell sheet, manuals and every SKU page live on pentair.com, and Pentair states that warranty, service and technical support are managed by Pentair. The units themselves are still built by G&F Manufacturing in North Fort Myers, Florida, which is the part most of our customers care about.
Which one is cheaper to run?
On the published figures, GulfStream. COP 6.0 against 5.7 at the same 80/80/80 test point is roughly 5% more heat per kilowatt-hour. That is a real difference over a Florida winter, but it is smaller than the differences caused by pool cover use, pump scheduling and whether the pool is screened, so we would not choose a heat pump on COP alone.
Why does the heat-only model make more heat than the heat/cool model?
Because it is a simpler machine. Both manufacturers rate their reverse-cycle unit about 3,000 BTU/hr lower than the heat-only version of the same size — 135,000 against 138,000 on both lines — because the reversing valve and the extra refrigerant plumbing cost a little heating capacity. Published efficiency does not change.
Can either one be controlled from my phone?
Not on its own. Neither heat pump has Wi-Fi built in. A Hayward HeatPro joins an Omni automation system through a two-wire relay and is controlled from the Omni app that way. A GulfStream takes a dry-contact remote thermostat signal from systems such as AquaLink, AquaLogic or Compool, but its manual states it cannot be connected over RS-485 and Pentair publishes no app for the brand.
Which has the better warranty?
It depends which part you are worried about. GulfStream publishes 7 years parts and 2 years labor with no trip charges — though Pentair's own cross-brand warranty table lists much shorter GulfStream terms, a conflict we could not resolve. Hayward publishes 5 years parts, 2 years field labor (3 through a Hayward Rewards dealer) and 10 years on the titanium tube. Both terms depend on buying through the right channel.
Do you install both brands in Sarasota?
Yes. We install and service GulfStream and Hayward heat pumps throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida, including heat and cool models — two of the installs in our gallery are GulfStream units and several are Hayward. This comparison is written for pool owners anywhere; the installation offer is local.
Still not sure? We will tell you which one we would fit.
We install both sides of most of these comparisons, which means we have no reason to steer you. Send us the pool details and we will give you a straight answer — and a quote if you are on Florida's Gulf Coast.
