Jandy vs Pentair Gas Pool Heaters
Jandy JXi and Pentair MasterTemp and ETi gas pool heaters compared on BTU, thermal efficiency, heat exchanger material, warranty, automation and price tier.
Updated September 17, 2026 · Affordable Solar & Pool Heating, LLC · Owner/operator Henry Manna
Jandy sells one gas platform in three sizes; Pentair sells three different ones. A JXi is a JXi at 200,000, 260,000 or 399,000 BTU/hr — copper exchanger, 84% thermal efficiency on the two larger sizes, in the most compact cabinet in its output class — with the instrumented JXiQ and the VersaFlo bypass as the upgrades above it. Pentair offers a copper MasterTemp at 84%, a cupro-nickel MasterTemp HD at 82% and the condensing ETi 400, whose direct-fire titanium exchanger is rated 96%.
Choose Jandy if the pad is tight, the pool runs on AquaLink, or you want a 260,000 BTU heater an existing 1-inch gas line can feed. Choose Pentair for the range, for 2 years parts and labor on a MasterTemp and 3 on an ETi against Jandy's 1 year parts with no labor at all, and for the deepest gas-heater parts network in Florida.

Where they actually differ
Range: one platform against three
Jandy's approach is deliberately narrow. The JXi comes in 200,000, 260,000 and 399,000 BTU/hr sizes for natural gas or propane, and the body dimensions are identical across all three — 22.1 inches wide, 21.6 deep, 26.5 high. That is why it is so often the only heater that physically fits a crowded Florida equipment pad. Above it sit the JXiQ, which adds sensors and a larger display, and VersaFlo, an integrated bypass that routes water around the exchanger when the heater is idle.
Pentair's approach is to sell you three different answers. MasterTemp is the conventional workhorse, up to 400,000 BTU/hr of input at 84% thermal efficiency with a copper exchanger. MasterTemp HD is the same heater with cupro-nickel at 82%, natural gas only. ETi is the outlier: a condensing heater with a Titan-Tough direct-fire titanium exchanger and PVC venting, rated 96% on the ETi 400.
If you know exactly what problem you are solving — corrosion, fuel cost, footprint — Pentair probably has a specific heater for it. If you want one good heater that fits anywhere and talks to AquaLink, Jandy's single platform is easier to specify.
Warranty, the purchase channel, and what they do to our ratings
This is the clearest difference between the two brands and it is worth more than any spec on the table. Jandy's published limited warranty covers JXi heaters for one year from retail purchase, and the document states that liability does not include costs for labor to service or repair the product — so there is no labor coverage at all. It also does not apply to product purchased through the internet or other e-commerce platforms, and it requires installation and service by a licensed, qualified pool professional.
Jandy's one longer term is five years on the heat exchanger, and only when VersaFlo is factory-installed. That is standard on every non-ASME JXiQ and available on JXi models as the K suffix, and it is the only route to more than twelve months of coverage on any part of a Jandy gas heater.
Pentair publishes 2 years parts and labor on MasterTemp and 3 years parts and labor on the ETi 250 and ETi 400. Both come with the same condition: the heater has to be bought from a brick-and-mortar retailer, pool builder or pool service company and installed by a qualified professional who charges a fee. Bought from an internet retailer, it drops to 1 year parts only with no labor. Pentair also publishes a bundle term — a qualifying pump, filter and heater installed together all go to 3 years — and registration is required in every case.
Neither brand rewards buying the box online. Jandy voids the warranty outright; Pentair cuts it to one year of parts. Whoever you buy from, get the channel confirmed in writing.
That is also what separates the two brands on our rating card, because warranty and support carries the largest single weight in our formula at 25%. The JXi400N comes out at 3.6 out of 5 and the JXi260N at 3.5, against 4.2 for the MasterTemp 400 NG and 4.5 for the ETi 400.
We want to be fair about where those numbers come from. Jandy's engineering is not the problem: the JXi matches Pentair's 84% thermal efficiency, its cabinet is the most compact in its output class, and its RS-485 link into AquaLink is a real data connection rather than a relay. Score the JXi400N with the same warranty subscore we give the MasterTemp and the gap closes to three-tenths of a point, with the rest coming from serviceability and value, where Pentair benefits from being the gas heater most often already on the pad in this market. Read the scores as a measure of the risk you are carrying rather than a verdict on how the heaters are built.
Efficiency: 83-84% across the board, and one 96% outlier
On conventional heaters the two brands are level. Jandy's EnergyGuide labels rate the copper JXi 260 and 400 at 84% and the 200 at 83%; the cupro-nickel JXI400NN is labeled 83%. Pentair rates the copper MasterTemp at 84% tested per ANSI Z21.56:19/CSA 4.7:19 section 5.10 and the cupro-nickel HD models at 82%. Nobody is winning a running-cost argument on one or two points.
The ETi 400 is the exception and it is a big one. Pentair rates it at 96% on the same test standard and cites the Department of Energy's pool heater certification database for the claim that it is the highest in its class. In Pentair's own arithmetic, a conventional gas heater puts about 84 cents of every fuel dollar into the water and the ETi puts 96. It is also the fastest heater in Pentair's lineup chart: an estimated 4 hours 20 minutes to lift a 20,000-gallon pool by 10°F and 23 minutes to lift a 600-gallon spa by 30°F.
The efficiency comes with real obligations. The ETi 400 is a condensing appliance that produces 2 to 4 gallons of acidic condensate per hour, which has to be routed somewhere legal — Pentair strongly recommends the Condensate Neutralizer Kit, P/N 475612, and the cartridge is a consumable. It vents as Category IV through PVC, CPVC or stainless, 4-inch pipe to 120 feet or 6-inch to 300 feet, and with 4-inch pipe the Combustion Air Intake Kit P/N 475971 is required. It is also physically much larger: roughly 40 by 30 by 46 inches and 365 pounds crated, against a JXi's 22.1 by 21.6 by 26.5 inches.
Our honest rule is that the ETi repays a pool that is heated hard through the winter and does not repay a pool heated six weekends a year. On the second pool, a MasterTemp or a JXi costs less to own.
Heat exchanger material, and what each brand will sell you
Copper is standard on both brands' conventional heaters, and copper is the category baseline rather than a coastal specification. The difference is how far up each brand lets you upgrade.
Jandy's corrosion option is narrow: its 2024 catalog lists cupro-nickel JXi part numbers in the 400 size only, as JXI400NN for natural gas and JXI400PN for propane, at 83% rather than 84%. The parts section of the JXi manual also references 260 cupro-nickel models, which the current catalog does not list — so confirm in writing what is actually orderable rather than assuming you can upgrade a 260.
Pentair gives you two steps up. The HD models swap copper for cupro-nickel at 82%, which Pentair positions for low pH, high flow and heavy use, with the limitation that every HD part number is natural gas only. Above that, the ETi 400's direct-fire titanium exchanger with ASME certified construction is the most corrosion-resistant thing available in a gas heater, and it is standard on that model rather than an upgrade.
None of it replaces chemistry. Pentair's manual is blunt that chlorine tablets in the skimmer and feeders plumbed upstream of the heater damage the exchanger regardless of material, and Jandy's manual states that damage to the heat exchanger by corrosive water is not covered. The salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, with a check valve between them.
Automation and diagnostics — including one surprise
Both brands build their heaters to be driven by their own automation, and neither puts Wi-Fi in the heater itself. Every JXi and JXiQ takes a two-wire or three-wire remote or a four-pin RS-485 connection to Jandy AquaLink RS, PDA and Z4 systems, with iAquaLink app control through that system. The MasterTemp has an RS-485 COM port that connects directly to an IntelliCenter Control System, up to 16 heaters on addresses 1 through 16, with the heater's own buttons going inactive and its alarms showing on the automation home screen.
The surprise is that Pentair's premium heater has the weaker connection. The ETi 400 manual documents a 2-wire dry contact through the fireman's switch terminals for IntelliCenter, IntelliTouch or EasyTouch — on/off control — and no RS-485 port at all. If full automation integration matters to you, the cheaper MasterTemp is the better Pentair, which is not the order most buyers expect.
On the heater itself, diagnostics are a strength on both sides. A MasterTemp's two-line LCD keeps the last five errors plus total runtime, on/off cycles, live stack flue temperature and flame sensor status; the ETi 400 keeps a five-error history and reads out both stack flue sensors. Jandy's JXiQ goes further than either, measuring the temperature rise across the exchanger and handing live sensor data to a technician over Bluetooth in the Fluidra Pro app — but that is a service tool, not homeowner app control.
Size, gas line, fuel availability and the equipment pad
Gas pipe sizing is where a heater swap gets expensive, and the smaller heater is always the more forgiving one. Jandy's table allows 50 feet of 1-inch natural gas pipe to a JXi260 but only 20 feet to a JXi400, with 3/4-inch permitted for the first 5 feet from the gas valve. Pentair allows 3/4-inch to 20 equivalent feet and 1-inch to 70 feet on a MasterTemp 250, against 1-inch to 20 feet on the 400. The ETi 400 is the strictest of the lot: 3/4-inch pipe is not permitted at all, and you need 1-inch to 20 feet, 1-1/4 to 90 feet or 1-1/2 to 200 feet.
Flow requirements differ more than people expect. A JXi needs 30 GPM minimum and tolerates up to 100 GPM. A MasterTemp 400 or ETi 400 needs 40 GPM minimum and up to 120 GPM before a bypass is required; a MasterTemp 250 needs only 25 GPM. On a variable-speed pump that is the difference between a quiet heating speed and a noisy one.
Venting and footprint follow the same pattern. The JXi260 takes a 7-inch Category I vent connection where the JXi400 takes 8 inches — worth knowing on any sheltered installation — and both sit in the same 22.1-inch cabinet. The MasterTemp is 23.02 by 21.0 by 28.15 inches, vents through a built-in stackless system outdoors, needs 6 inches from combustible surfaces and 36 inches from an air conditioner or heat pump, and Pentair states anchor clamps are required in Florida using the Bolt Down Bracket Kit P/N 460738.
Fuel availability decides the shortlist before any of that. Large parts of Sarasota and Manatee County have no natural gas main, and both brands sell propane versions of their conventional heaters — Jandy's JXI260P and JXI400P, Pentair's MasterTemp 400 as P/N 460737 and the 250 as P/N 460733 — with a tank, a delivery contract and a higher cost per degree attached. Propane also narrows the corrosion options unevenly: Pentair publishes no propane part number for any MasterTemp HD variant, so a propane customer cannot have a cupro-nickel MasterTemp, while Jandy can supply cupro-nickel on propane as the JXI400PN. The ETi 400 ships configured for natural gas and converts with Pentair's kit P/N 476072, which is a qualified-technician job.
Three operating limits to close on. Jandy publishes a minimum outdoor ambient of 40°F and asks for a protected shelter below freezing; Pentair warns that running a MasterTemp continuously with water below 68°F causes condensation damage and voids the warranty; and Jandy states that indoor installation is not recommended for liquid propane heaters. A gas heater is not freeze protection on either badge.
Which one for which job
The same six questions we would ask on a site visit, answered for these products.
If you need
Fast spa heating
Our pick
Why
399,000 BTU/hr in a cabinet 22.1 inches wide puts spa-grade output on pads where the 40 by 30 by 46 inch ETi 400 will not physically fit; where there is room for it, Pentair's chart puts the ETi 400 at 23 minutes for a 600-gallon spa against 27 for the MasterTemp 400 and 27 for the Jandy JXi400 (Jandy's 2024 catalog addendum).
If you need
Everyday Florida pool heating
Our pick
Jandy JXi260N, if it has to be gas
Why
It carries the same 84% thermal efficiency as the 400s, needs only 30 GPM of flow, and Jandy allows 50 feet of 1-inch gas pipe to it against 20 feet for a 400 — though an electric heat pump at COP 5.7 or better costs far less to hold a temperature all winter.
If you need
Heat and cool
Our pick
Neither — no gas heater cools
Why
Cooling needs a reverse-cycle heat pump such as the Hayward HP31405T or the GulfStream HE150-TA; see our GulfStream vs Hayward heat pump comparison, or the heat-pump hub for the rest of the field.
If you need
Premium efficiency
Our pick
Why
96% thermal efficiency on the same test standard that rates the others at 84% — with the condition that it produces 2 to 4 gallons of acidic condensate an hour and needs a neutralizer and PVC venting.
If you need
Corrosion-resistant exchanger
Our pick
Why
It is the only heater in this table that is not copper: a direct-fire titanium exchanger with ASME certified construction, where Jandy's corrosion upgrade is cupro-nickel in the 400 size only at 83%.
If you need
Automation ecosystem
Our pick
Pentair MasterTemp 400 NG — or the Jandy JXi400N on a Jandy pad
Why
The MasterTemp's RS-485 COM port puts up to 16 heaters on an IntelliCenter with their alarms on the home screen and the JXi's four-pin RS-485 does the equivalent on AquaLink, while the premium ETi 400 documents only a 2-wire dry contact.

Common questions
Which brand has the longer warranty?
Pentair, by a wide margin. MasterTemp carries 2 years parts and labor and the ETi line 3 years parts and labor when the heater is bought through a pool professional. Jandy publishes 1 year parts on a JXi with no labor coverage at all, and five years on the heat exchanger only when VersaFlo is factory-installed. Both brands cut or void coverage on an online purchase.
Is the ETi 400's 96% efficiency worth the money?
It depends on how hard you run the heater. Pentair's own arithmetic is that a conventional gas heater puts about 84 cents of every fuel dollar into the water and the ETi puts 96. On a pool heated through the winter that adds up; on a pool heated six weekends a year it will not repay the price difference, and you will still be managing 2 to 4 gallons of condensate an hour and replacing a neutralizer cartridge.
Which one fits a tight equipment pad?
Jandy, comfortably. A JXi is 22.1 inches wide by 21.6 deep by 26.5 high and the cabinet is the same size at 200,000, 260,000 and 399,000 BTU/hr. A MasterTemp is 23.02 by 21.0 by 28.15 inches, and the ETi 400 is roughly 40 by 30 by 46 inches at 365 pounds crated. On a narrow Sarasota side yard that decides the shortlist before anything else does.
Can I put either brand on a salt water pool?
Yes, with the right exchanger and the right plumbing order. Jandy's corrosion option is cupro-nickel in the 400 size, as JXI400NN or JXI400PN at 83% efficiency. Pentair offers cupro-nickel MasterTemp HD models at 82%, natural gas only, and the titanium ETi 400 at 96%. Whichever you buy, the salt cell or chlorinator goes downstream of the heater, never upstream.
Do these heaters work with the other brand's automation?
For on/off control, usually. Every JXi accepts a two-wire or three-wire remote and every Pentair gas heater accepts a dry contact on the fireman's switch terminals, which is what a third-party controller or a time clock uses. The deeper integration — the automation reading the heater's faults and driving its setpoint over RS-485 — is Jandy-to-Jandy or Pentair-to-Pentair, and the ETi 400 does not offer it at all.
Do you install both brands in Sarasota?
Yes. We install and service Jandy and Pentair gas heaters, including the ETi line, throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida. Because of the condensate and venting requirements we always look at the pad before quoting an ETi. This comparison is written for pool owners anywhere; the installation offer is local.
Still not sure? We will tell you which one we would fit.
We install both sides of most of these comparisons, which means we have no reason to steer you. Send us the pool details and we will give you a straight answer — and a quote if you are on Florida's Gulf Coast.
