Short answer
There isn't one best pool heater warranty: each manufacturer is generous in a different place, and every one attaches conditions. Among heat pumps, GulfStream (on its sell sheet), Raypak's Crosswind V and Thermeau's Signature publish 7 years on parts, Built Right and Thermeau's Prestige publish 5 years of parts and labor, and Pentair's UltraTemp pairs 2 years parts and labor with 10 years on the compressor and a lifetime term on the titanium exchanger. Among gas heaters, terms run from 1 year parts with no labor on Jandy's JXi to 3 years parts and labor on Raypak's AVIA and Pentair's ETi 400. Compare parts, labor and exchanger terms side by side, then check who has to sell and install the heater and what the warranty excludes.
What we usually recommend
If you're comparing quotes, we'd ask each installer for the manufacturer's current warranty document for the exact model, by name and revision, and check three things first: whether the labor term includes trip charges, whether the heat exchanger or compressor has its own longer term, and whether buying through that installer keeps you in the channel the warranty requires. On a salt pool or a coastal lot, we'd weigh the exchanger term and the corrosion exclusions more heavily than the headline parts number.
- No warranty comes out ahead on every term: some put the weight on parts, some on labor, some on the exchanger or compressor.
- Labor runs from none at all (Jandy) to 5 years (on-site for Built Right, and on Thermeau's Prestige), and each brand treats trip charges differently.
- Most terms apply only when the heater is bought through the authorized channel and installed by a qualified or licensed professional; online purchases often drop to 1 year parts or lose coverage.
- Exclusions for flow, water chemistry, corrosion and freezing decide more claims than the headline years.
Why there's no single best warranty
A pool heater warranty is really several warranties in one document: a parts term, a labor term, and sometimes a separate term on the heat exchanger or compressor. Each manufacturer puts its weight on a different one, and every term comes with conditions about who sold the heater, who installed it, whether it was registered and how it was looked after. A long parts term is worth less than it looks if the labor term ended years earlier, or if the failure falls under a water chemistry exclusion.
The terms worth weighing most are the ones on the parts that actually fail and cost the most: the compressor and heat exchanger on a heat pump, the heat exchanger and controls on a gas heater. That is also how our MPH Equipment Score treats it. Warranty and manufacturer support carry 25% of the score, the largest of its six criteria, and the rating looks at coverage on the expensive components and how claims are handled rather than the headline number.
Every term below matches the manufacturer record in our heater comparison. Specifications and manufacturer warranty information were reviewed for the 2026 model year, and warranties do change: AquaCal's changed twice in two years. Always get the current document for the model on your quote.
Heat pump warranties side by side
These are the published residential terms for the heat pumps in our heater comparison. Three patterns stand out. GulfStream, Raypak's Crosswind V and Thermeau's Signature put the weight on parts, at 7 years, with 2 years of labor. Built Right and Thermeau's Prestige carry 5 years of labor as well as parts, and AquaCal and Moov 3 years of labor. Pentair's UltraTemp and Hayward's HeatPro put a long term on a specific component: 10 years on the compressor and a lifetime exchanger term for Pentair, 10 years on the titanium tube for Hayward. Jandy's VersaTemp publishes no labor coverage at all.
Two records carry an unresolved conflict. Pentair publishes 7 years parts and 2 years labor for GulfStream on the sell sheet and product pages, but its own cross-brand warranty table lists GulfStream at 2 years and 3 years parts. Built Right's current warranty page covers the 50 United States, while the warranty sheet in its 2017-2018 owner's manual limits coverage to Florida installations and adds registration within thirty days and a factory authorized service agent. In both cases, get the current terms in writing before you buy.

Gas heater warranties side by side
Published gas heater terms are generally shorter than heat pump terms, and the only gas models in our heater comparison with a separate, longer heat exchanger term are Jandy's VersaFlo heaters. Raypak's AVIA and Pentair's ETi 400 publish 3 years of parts and labor. Hayward's Universal H-Series carries 3 years of parts, with labor that depends on who sells it. Pentair's MasterTemp is 2 years parts and labor, rising to 3 years if a qualifying pump, filter and heater are installed together. Jandy's JXi is 1 year, parts only.
Because a gas heater usually dies at the heat exchanger, the exchanger material can matter more than an extra warranty year, especially on a salt pool or near the water. Our heat exchanger guide explains why cupro-nickel and NiTek outlast copper in aggressive water.
| Gas heater | Parts | Labor | Heat exchanger | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hayward Universal H-Series (H250FDN, H400FDN, H250FDP, H400FDP) | 3 years | 1 year field labor (3 years when sold by a Hayward Rewards dealer) | No separate term; the cupro-nickel exchanger is covered under parts | W3 Open Line versions: 1 year parts, no labor. An exchanger bought later as a part: 1 year parts, no labor. |
| Pentair MasterTemp 250 / 400 and HD models | 2 years | 2 years | No separate term | Pump, filter and heater installed together: all three go to 3 years. Registration required; internet purchase: 1 year parts only. |
| Pentair ETi 400 | 3 years | 3 years | No separate term | Same channel conditions as MasterTemp; registration required. |
| Raypak AVIA 264A / 404A and AVIA HD (NiTek) | 3 years | 3 years | No separate term | 1 year outside a single-family home; no travel time, freight or fuel; ProTek Shield anode excluded. |
| Jandy JXi260N / JXi400N | 1 year | None | No separate term on these models | No internet purchases; licensed, qualified installer; 1 year outside a single-family home. |
| Jandy JXi400NK (VersaFlo) / JXiQ400NK | 1 year | None | 5 years (VersaFlo factory-installed) | Same conditions as the JXi. |
Parts versus labor: what each one pays for
Parts coverage pays for the replacement component. Labor coverage pays for the technician's time to diagnose the fault and fit the part. Once the labor term ends, a failure inside the parts term usually means a free part and a labor bill. Jandy states it plainly: its liability does not include costs for labor to service or repair the product, at any point. Raypak covers reasonable repair labor during the term but not travel time, other labor costs for the service provider, freight, shipping or fuel.
Component terms need the closest reading. Some include labor and many don't: Pentair's UltraTemp compressor term is 10 years parts and labor, Raypak's Crosswind V titanium tube is 10 years parts but 2 years labor, and AquaCal's titanium tubing term is a limited lifetime on the part only, with years 4 and 5 described as limited parts. Words like limited, part only and field labor each change what you will actually pay when something fails, so ask the installer to walk you through them for the model you're buying.
Registration, the purchase channel and who installs it
Most published terms only apply when the heater comes through the manufacturer's channel. Pentair's terms require purchase from a brick-and-mortar retailer, pool builder or pool service company and installation by a qualified professional who charges a fee; a unit bought from an internet retailer gets 1 year parts only with no labor, and Pentair lists GulfStream under the same rule. Hayward's warranties apply only to product bought from Hayward or an authorized seller, and its W3-prefixed Open Line versions carry 1 year parts with no labor. Jandy's warranty does not apply to products bought online and requires a licensed, qualified pool professional. Raypak reserves the right to reject claims on heaters from unauthorized internet sites or marketplace storefronts. AquaCal requires an authorized dealer, and Moov excludes installation by a technician not qualified for the trade.
Registration rules differ. Pentair requires it. Thermeau's warranty applies automatically with no registration, as long as you keep the invoice. AquaCal's current documents carry a QR code for registering but do not make registration a condition of coverage, and where owner documents are missing the start date defaults to sixty days from manufacture. Built Right's older manual sheet asks for registration within thirty days.
Then there's who performs the work. GulfStream's manual says warranty service must be handled by an authorized service center, AquaCal requires prior authorization and a qualified service technician and says non-OEM parts void the warranty, and Moov requires claims to be approved by an authorized Moov employee. We are not claiming authorized-dealer or service-center status for any manufacturer on this site, so ask whoever quotes you who handles warranty service for that brand in your area.
Exclusions: water chemistry, installation and Florida conditions
Chemistry and flow exclusions decide a lot of heat exchanger claims. Hayward excludes exchanger damage caused by inadequate flow, unbalanced water chemistry or sanitizer dosed upstream of the heater. Built Right requires maintained water chemistry and excludes bonding failures, freezing, negligence and installation in a corrosive environment. AquaCal excludes consumables, freeze damage and installation in corrosive environments. Raypak excludes its ProTek Shield anode and any damage caused by a depleted anode that wasn't replaced. Jandy doesn't warrant refrigerant or other expendables on its heat pumps.
Installation conditions matter just as much. GulfStream makes plumbing order a warranty condition (pool pump, filter, heat pump, solar, then chlorinator or salt cell, then the pool), and its installation manual warns that enclosed spaces such as garages and sheds without proper ventilation may void the warranty on refrigerant components. Pentair says running a MasterTemp continuously with water below 68°F voids the warranty, and that installing the gas line union inside the heater cabinet does too. Moov excludes damage from improper winterization and weather events. Raypak and Jandy drop to 1 year on anything outside a single-family home, and Built Right warrants commercial applications for one year.
In Florida terms, that means a salt cell plumbed after the heater, a pump schedule that keeps flow inside the heater's window, equipment set where storm water and spray don't reach it, and a clear answer from the manufacturer on what it counts as a corrosive environment if you live on the water.
Trip charges, including AquaCal's two documents
Labor coverage doesn't always mean a free visit. GulfStream's sell sheet says there are no trip charges during the labor period. Raypak doesn't cover travel time. Built Right makes transportation and trip charges the owner's responsibility.
AquaCal's two 2026 documents disagree. Its National Heat Pump Warranty LTP0159 Rev. H (02/26), the document linked from the warranty tab on aquacal.com when our heater comparison was checked on September 18, 2026, states that a trip charge applies for service performed after year 1. AquaCal's April 2026 warranty card, LTP19255 Rev A, lists the same terms but states that trip and shop supply fees are waived during years 1-3 and may apply in years 4-5. Confirm which document came with your unit. Neither document makes coverage conditional on PoolSync; the 2025 document they replaced, LTP17196 Rev A, gave 2 years of parts and labor plus a third year only if the heat pump was connected to the PoolSync app within 30 days of installation.
How to compare warranties when you're choosing a heater
Use the same checklist on every quote:
- Get the warranty document itself, by name and revision, for the exact model number on the quote.
- Line up parts, labor and any heat exchanger or compressor term separately rather than treating the biggest number as the warranty.
- Check the channel: who sold it, whether an online purchase changes the terms, and whether the installer meets the manufacturer's requirements.
- Check registration: whether it's required, the deadline, and keep the invoice either way.
- Read the exclusions against your pool: salt, coastal air, flow, chemistry, freezes and how the heater is plumbed.
- Ask about trip charges and who performs warranty service locally.
- Weigh it alongside the equipment itself. An extra warranty year doesn't make a copper exchanger the right choice for a salt pool.
