Why homeowners consider it

  • The warranty is the standout. Raypak's current pool heater warranty gives heat pumps two years for labor and seven years for parts, and covers the titanium tube of the heat exchanger for ten years parts and two years labor. For comparison, GulfStream publishes 7 years parts and 2 years labor, and Hayward's HeatPro carries 5 years parts, 2 years field labor and 10 years on the titanium tube.
  • It heats and chills. The EHC models add the reversing hardware and ship with a bypass assembly in the box, which matters in Florida more than almost anywhere — an unscreened pool in August is a heat problem, not a heating problem.
  • Titanium exchanger rated to 600 psig, with 2-inch PVC water connections and a 120°F maximum water temperature. Titanium is the right water-path material for a salt pool, and there is no copper anywhere in it.
  • Efficiency holds through the cold end of a Florida winter: Raypak publishes 137,000 BTU/hr at COP 5.8 at the 80/80/80 point, 129,000 at 5.7 at 80/63/80, and 85,000 BTU/hr at COP 4.1 at the AHRI low test point of 50°F air.
  • Wi-Fi and controls come included. Raymote is free and built in, the control can drive a variable-speed pump directly, it has dedicated valve-actuator connections, and Raypak states it can control up to six different devices — so the heat pump can act as the pad's controller rather than needing one.
  • The up-flow discharge blows cold air upward rather than sideways, which is easier to place on a narrow Florida side yard where a horizontal-discharge unit would blow into a fence or a neighbor's wall.

What to know before buying

  • It is not a variable-speed or inverter heat pump, whatever the name suggests. Raypak's manual describes a hermetic motor/compressor in a conventional refrigeration cycle, and the 'variable speed' in the literature refers to the heat pump's ability to control a variable-speed filter pump. Raypak's inverter model is the smaller horizontal-discharge Crosswind 50-I / 65-I.
  • Electrically it is a big load: 208-230V single phase, 6.7 kW input, 46 minimum recommended amps and a 60 amp recommended breaker. Older Sarasota and Bradenton panels often need work first, and that cost belongs in the quote.
  • It needs headroom. The unit discharges air upward through the top grille and Raypak asks for at least 5 feet of clear space above it, 12 inches to each side, and a 3 ft by 3 ft pad. It is explicitly not certified for indoor installation and must not go under a porch, a deck or inside a shed.
  • Flow matters in both directions. Raypak's minimum recommended flow is 20 GPM, the product page lists 60 GPM as the maximum, and the manual calls for a bypass on 5550-8550 models once flow exceeds 50 GPM. The heat/cool models ship with the bypass assembly for that reason.
  • The cabinet is powder-coated metal, not the ABS used by GulfStream and Jandy. It is well finished, but on a barrier-island lot within reach of salt spray a non-metallic cabinet is the more forgiving choice.
  • The compressor is locked out below the outside lockout temperature, which ships set at 45°F and is adjustable. On the Gulf Coast that costs you a handful of the coldest mornings a year.
  • Raypak's warranty applies only to heaters bought from an authorized U.S. dealer, and it does not cover travel time, freight or fuel. Rainwater running off a roof directly onto the unit is called out as not covered — worth a gutter or diverter if the pad sits under a roof edge.

Warranty, term by term

The warranty only matters on the parts that actually fail. Here is how this one splits up.

Parts
7 years
Labor
2 years
Heat exchanger
Titanium tube 10 years parts, 2 years labor

Raypak's current pool heater limited warranty lists Crosswind V and the 4550, 5550, 6550, 6550EHC, 8550 and 8550EHC models at two years for labor and seven years for parts, with the titanium tube component of the titanium heat exchanger warranted for ten years parts only and two years labor. Note that this is materially longer than the three-year figure quoted in some comparison material, including the brief this site was built from — Raypak's own warranty document controls. The warranty covers reasonable repair labor but not travel time, other service-provider labor costs, freight, shipping or fuel. It applies only to heaters purchased from an authorized dealer in the United States, and Raypak reserves the right to reject claims on units bought from unauthorized internet sites or marketplace storefronts. Professional installation / authorized-channel requirements may apply.

Why the heat exchanger matters

The heat exchanger is the part of a pool heater that actually moves heat into the water, and what it is made of decides how long the heater survives Florida water chemistry. Here is what the four materials mean in practice.

Copper
The traditional material and the cheapest to build. It transfers heat well and is fine on a well-balanced chlorine pool, but it is the least forgiving of low pH, high chlorine and salt. On the Gulf Coast it is usually the first component to fail.
Cupro-nickel
Copper alloyed with nickel. It gives up a little heat transfer in exchange for much better resistance to unbalanced water chemistry and salt. On gas heaters this is the upgrade worth having in Florida, and some manufacturers now ship it as standard.
NiTek (nickel alloy)
A nickel-alloy exchanger used on some gas heaters as a corrosion-resistant alternative to copper. Positioned between cupro-nickel and titanium in both durability and price.
TitaniumThis heater
Effectively immune to pool water chemistry, including salt. It is the standard on quality pool heat pumps and the reason a heat pump can sit on a salt pool for years without exchanger trouble. It is expensive, which is why you rarely see it on gas heaters.

Whatever the material, plumbing order matters just as much: a chlorinator or salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream.

How we scored it

MPH Equipment Score — 4.3/5How we rate heaters
  • Warranty is seven years parts, two years labor and ten years on the titanium tube. It scores 4.5 rather than 5 only because of the authorized-dealer condition and the exclusion of travel time and freight.
  • Titanium rated to 600 psig is the right water-path material for salt pools. It scores 4.5 rather than 5 because the cabinet is powder-coated metal — good, but not the non-metallic cabinet a barrier-island lot really wants.
  • Performance scores 4. COP 5.8 at 80/80/80 is solid and 4.1 at the AHRI low point is good, but the smaller 5550 and 6550 publish 6.1, and this is a fixed-speed machine rather than an inverter, so there is no efficient part-load operation to bank on.
  • Serviceability is the weakest column: a newer platform, a sealed refrigerant circuit that needs a certified technician, and no third-party review sample we could verify from a source we were able to fetch. Raypak's parts and rep network in Florida is good, which keeps it at 3.5 rather than lower.
  • Controls score 4.5. Free built-in Wi-Fi, direct variable-speed pump control, valve actuator outputs and up to six controllable devices make it more of a pad controller than a heater, which very little else in this category offers without an automation panel.
  • Value is among the strongest in our heat pump set. Heat and chill, titanium, free Wi-Fi and a seven-year parts warranty at an upper-mid price tier. Our score lands close to the 4.4 starter figure in the guide we work from, but for a different reason — the guide understates the warranty.

TWPH-8550EHC08 questions

Is the Crosswind V a variable-speed heat pump?

No, and this is a common mix-up. The Crosswind V uses a fixed-speed hermetic compressor; the 'variable speed' in its literature is its ability to control a variable-speed filter pump. Raypak's inverter-driven model is the smaller horizontal-discharge Crosswind 50-I / 65-I, at 44,000 and 61,000 BTU/hr.

What is the difference between EHT and EHC models?

EHT models heat only. EHC models heat and chill, and come with a bypass assembly in the box. The heat/chill version of the 8550 publishes 137,000 BTU/hr at COP 5.8 against 138,000 at 6.0 for the heat-only version, so you give up a fraction of efficiency for the cooling mode.

What electrical service does it need?

208-230V single phase, with 46 minimum recommended amps and a 60 amp recommended breaker for the 8550EHC. Older Florida panels frequently need attention before a heat pump this size goes in, so get the electrical scoped before you compare quotes.

Will it work on a salt water pool?

Yes — the titanium exchanger is exactly the right material, and Raypak's own water chemistry table allows up to 4,500 ppm salt. The chlorinator or salt cell still has to sit downstream of the heat pump, and Raypak states corrosive water voids all warranties.

How cold can it get before it stops heating?

Raypak does not publish a hard cut-off, but the control has an outside lockout temperature that ships set at 45°F and is adjustable, and the compressor will not run below it. Output falls as the air cools, which is why Raypak publishes a separate rating at 50°F air — 85,000 BTU/hr at COP 4.1 for this model.
