Raypak Pool Heaters
Raypak has built pool and spa heaters since 1947 and has been part of the Rheem family of brands since 1985, out of a manufacturing plant in Oxnard, California. Its current residential line is the AVIA gas heater — copper, or NiTek nickel alloy on HD models — and the Crosswind V heat pump. Two things set Raypak apart on paper: free Wi-Fi control built into the heater rather than sold as an accessory, and the published warranties — three years parts and labor on AVIA gas heaters, and two years labor, seven years parts and ten years on the titanium tube on Crosswind V heat pumps.
Raypak is one of the oldest names in pool heating. The company started in 1947 in a Southern California garage, moved into its current Oxnard plant in 2000, and has been part of Rheem's family of brands since 1985 — the same group as Ruud, Richmond and Eemax. It builds commercial and residential boilers and water heaters alongside pool heaters, which is why its equipment has always leaned toward the commercial end of the trade's expectations.
The current residential gas heater is the AVIA, in 264,000 and 399,000 BTU/hr sizes for natural gas or propane, at 84% thermal efficiency. Its design arguments are specific rather than vague: a patented straight-tube heat exchanger with no bends or helical coils, a stainless steel combustion chamber instead of the galvanized steel Raypak says is common in this class, a replaceable ProTek Shield sacrificial anode in the inlet header, and a Unitherm Governor thermostatic mixing valve that holds the heater's internal water temperature between 120°F and 135°F so the fin tubes neither condense nor scale. AVIA HD models swap the copper exchanger for NiTek, a nickel alloy Raypak rates as 300% more erosion resistant than copper and 200% more than cupro-nickel on ASTM G73-10 liquid-impingement testing — at the same 84% efficiency.
On the electric side, Crosswind V is the mainstream heat pump line: 4550, 5550, 6550 and 8550 in heat-only form, with heat/chill versions of the two largest, all with a titanium heat exchanger, an up-flow (vertical) air discharge and a powder-coated metal cabinet. It is a fixed-speed machine — Raypak's inverter model is the separate, smaller horizontal-discharge Crosswind 50-I and 65-I, at 44,000 and 61,000 BTU/hr. Raypak also still sells the older atmospheric Digital gas heaters at 82% thermal efficiency, which are a useful baseline to compare an AVIA against rather than a product we would specify new.
The reason to take Raypak seriously in Florida is the warranty document. Its current pool heater warranty gives AVIA heaters three years for parts and labor in a single-family home — the same term Pentair publishes on its ETi 400 — and gives Crosswind V heat pumps two years labor, seven years parts, and ten years on the titanium tube of the heat exchanger. Both terms come with the same two conditions: the heater has to be bought from an authorized U.S. dealer, and labor cover does not extend to travel time, freight or fuel. Read them and then read the competition's: Hayward's standard gas term is three years parts and one year field labor, and Jandy's is one year on parts with no labor.

What Raypak builds
AVIA
Gas heaterThe current residential gas heater, at 264,000 and 399,000 BTU/hr for natural gas or propane and 84% thermal efficiency. Copper straight-tube heat exchanger, stainless steel combustion chamber, ProTek Shield replaceable anode, and Raymote Wi-Fi built in. Three years parts and labor on a single-family residential installation.
AVIA HD with NiTek
Gas heaterThe same heater with a NiTek nickel-alloy exchanger, which Raypak rates as 300% more erosion resistant than copper and 200% more than cupro-nickel on ASTM G73-10 (2017) testing, at the same 84% thermal efficiency and the same three-year parts and labor warranty. The version to specify for a salt pool or a coastal lot.
Digital
Gas heaterThe older atmospheric line, in 199,000, 266,000, 332,000 and 399,000 BTU/hr sizes with a copper fin-tube exchanger at 82% thermal efficiency. Warranted for two years parts and labor rather than three. Worth knowing as a price-point baseline and because a lot of Florida pads still have one on them.
Crosswind V
Electric heat pumpFixed-speed heat pumps in 85,000, 102,000, 118,000 and 138,000 BTU/hr classes at the 80/80/80 test point, with heat/chill versions of the 6550 and 8550. Titanium heat exchanger, up-flow air discharge, powder-coated metal cabinet, free Raymote Wi-Fi, direct variable-speed pump control. Two years labor, seven years parts, ten years on the titanium tube.
Crosswind 50-I and 65-I
Electric heat pumpThe inverter line: 44,000 and 61,000 BTU/hr, horizontal discharge, published at COP 5.8 and 5.3 and as low as 34.9 dB. Smaller units for smaller pools or a quieter installation, warranted three years parts and labor with seven years on the titanium tube.

What we like
- Published warranty terms that include labor: three years parts and labor on AVIA gas heaters — the same term Pentair publishes on its ETi line — and two years labor with seven years parts and ten years on the titanium tube for Crosswind V heat pumps.
- Wi-Fi is included, not sold separately. Raymote is built into AVIA and Crosswind V, giving the homeowner temperature control and a heat-time calculator and giving a service company a fleet-monitoring dashboard, with no automation panel or paid accessory required.
- NiTek is a real answer to the corrosion problem, and it costs nothing in efficiency. A NiTek AVIA carries the same 84% thermal efficiency rating as the copper one, where some competitors' corrosion-resistant exchangers are rated a point lower than their copper versions.
- The gas heater's water path is thought through beyond the exchanger material: straight tubes with no bends for scale to collect in, a stainless steel combustion chamber, a replaceable sacrificial anode, and a thermostatic mixing valve that keeps the tubes out of both the condensing and the scaling temperature ranges.
- Nearly eighty years of heater manufacturing and Rheem's parts and distribution behind it. Raypak publishes model-number history back through discontinued products, which matters when the heater on your pad is fifteen years old.
- The AVIA is designed as a drop-in: Raypak aligns the water and gas connections with common competitor heaters specifically to keep a replacement from turning into a re-plumb.
What to know before buying
- Both warranties are conditional on buying from an authorized U.S. dealer. Raypak states it reserves the right to reject claims on heaters bought from unauthorized internet sites or marketplace storefronts — on a brand whose main selling point is its warranty, that condition is the whole point.
- Labor cover has edges. Raypak pays reasonable repair labor but explicitly not travel time, other service-provider labor costs, freight, shipping or fuel, so a warranty visit is not always free.
- Warranty terms drop sharply outside single-family homes. AVIA and Crosswind 50-I / 65-I models fall to one year parts and labor in any application other than a single-family residential dwelling, which matters for condos, HOA pools and rentals.
- AVIA is a comparatively new platform. Raypak's own brochure presents it as a new design built from installer feedback, and it has a shorter field record than the gas heaters it competes with. We were unable to fetch any third-party review sample for it, so we score the design rather than a long track record.
- The naming is misleading in one specific way: Crosswind V is not a variable-speed or inverter heat pump. It uses a fixed-speed compressor and can control a variable-speed filter pump. The inverter product is the smaller horizontal-discharge Crosswind 50-I / 65-I.
- Minimum flow on the AVIA is 40 GPM, higher than the 30 GPM that Hayward and Jandy gas heaters accept. On a variable-speed pump that pushes the heating speed up and is worth checking before assuming a straight swap.
Raypak questions
Who owns Raypak?
Rheem. Raypak was founded in 1947 and became part of the Rheem family of brands in 1985, alongside Ruud, Richmond, Eemax and others. It still manufactures in Oxnard, California, where it moved into a purpose-built plant in 2000.
What is NiTek and is it worth paying for?
NiTek is Raypak's nickel-alloy heat exchanger material, fitted to AVIA HD models. Raypak publishes it as 300% more erosion resistant than copper and 200% more than cupro-nickel on ASTM G73-10 (2017) liquid-impingement testing, at the same 84% thermal efficiency as copper. On a salt pool, a coastal lot, or any pool where chemistry is not watched closely, we think it is the version worth pricing.
How long is the Raypak warranty?
AVIA standard copper and HD NiTek heaters in the 264 and 404 sizes carry three years parts and labor on a single-family residential installation. Crosswind V heat pumps carry two years labor and seven years parts, with the titanium tube of the heat exchanger at ten years parts and two years labor. Both require purchase from an authorized U.S. dealer, exclude travel time and freight, and drop to one year outside a single-family dwelling.
Do I need pool automation to use the app?
No. Raymote Wi-Fi is built into AVIA gas heaters and Crosswind V heat pumps and Raypak provides the app and the fleet-monitoring dashboard free, so temperature control and a heat-time estimate are on your phone without an automation panel. A third-party automation system still connects to the heater the traditional way, as a two-wire or three-wire remote.
Is the Crosswind V an inverter heat pump?
No. It uses a fixed-speed compressor; the variable-speed feature in its literature is its ability to control a variable-speed filter pump. Raypak's inverter-driven models are the smaller horizontal-discharge Crosswind 50-I and 65-I, at 44,000 and 61,000 BTU/hr.
