Why homeowners consider it
- Three years parts and labor on a single-family residential installation, the same term Pentair publishes on its ETi 400. Hayward gives three years parts and one year field labor as standard; Jandy gives one year parts with no labor at all. Raypak covering the labor is the difference between a free repair and a service call you pay for.
- The heat exchanger is a straight-tube design. Raypak's own literature makes the case plainly: no bends and no helical coils, which removes the spots where scale and erosion concentrate, and makes the tubes serviceable for annual maintenance rather than sealed away.
- The combustion chamber is stainless steel rather than the galvanized steel Raypak says is common in this category — a real corrosion advantage above the water line, where flue condensate does the damage.
- Wi-Fi is built in and free. Raymote gives the homeowner temperature control and a heat-time calculator on a phone, and gives a service company fleet monitoring and diagnostics, with no separate automation panel or paid subscription accessory in between.
- The ProTek Shield is a replaceable sacrificial anode in the inlet header. It protects the exchanger from galvanic and stray-current corrosion and is meant to be swapped when it is worn down — a wear part doing its job, not a failure.
What to know before buying
- The ProTek Shield anode is a consumable and the warranty excludes it outright. Raypak's exclusion 12 states the shield is not covered under any warranty, that it will need replacing as part of routine service, and — the part that matters — that the warranty does not cover damage caused to the heater by a depleted ProTek Shield that has not been replaced as needed. Budget for checking and replacing it as annual maintenance, because neglecting a cheap part can cost you the exchanger cover.
- Minimum flow is 40 GPM, which is higher than most of its competition — Jandy and Hayward gas heaters will run at 30. On a variable-speed pump that pushes the heating speed up, and it is worth checking against your plumbing before assuming a straight swap.
- Natural gas models are approved to 10,000 feet of elevation but propane models only to 4,500 feet, and propane needs a higher inlet pressure: 8.0 inches W.C. dynamic minimum against 3.5 inches for natural gas. Irrelevant for altitude on the Gulf Coast, relevant for how the gas train has to be set up.
- Raypak's warranty is conditional on buying from an authorized dealer, and it explicitly reserves the right to reject claims on heaters bought from unauthorized internet sites or marketplace storefronts. On a heater whose main selling point is its warranty, that condition is the whole ballgame.
- The labor cover has edges. Raypak pays for the repair labor but not travel time, freight or fuel, so a warranty repair is not always a zero-dollar visit.
- Raypak does not recommend prolonged operation with water below 50°F, and asks that a heater started with water that cold be run continuously until the water warms — a note for anyone bringing a long-dormant pool back up in January.
- AVIA is a comparatively recent platform. Raypak's own brochure describes it as a new, Pool-Pro-driven design rather than a long-running one, which is worth weighing against the deep field history behind a Universal H-Series or a MasterTemp. We could not verify any third-party review sample for it from a source we were able to fetch, so we are not quoting one.
- At 264,000 BTU/hr it is a pool heater more than a spa heater. If you have an attached spa you want hot in under an hour, price the 404A instead — the cabinet, warranty and controls are identical.
Warranty, term by term
The warranty only matters on the parts that actually fail. Here is how this one splits up.
- Parts
- 3 years
- Labor
- 3 years
Raypak's current pool heater limited warranty lists AVIA standard models with copper and HD models with NiTek heat exchangers, sizes 264 and 404, at three years for parts and labor. Two conditions matter. First, the asterisk on those model numbers: if the heater is installed anywhere other than a single-family residential dwelling, the warranty period drops to one year for parts and labor. Second, the labor cover is for the repair itself — Raypak states it does not cover travel time, other labor costs for the service provider, or freight, shipping and fuel costs. Raypak also states the warranty applies only to heaters purchased from an authorized dealer in the United States and that it reserves the right to reject claims on units bought from unauthorized internet sites or marketplace storefronts. Professional installation / authorized-channel requirements may apply.
Why the heat exchanger matters
The heat exchanger is the part of a pool heater that actually moves heat into the water, and what it is made of decides how long the heater survives Florida water chemistry. Here is what the four materials mean in practice.
- CopperThis heater
- The traditional material and the cheapest to build. It transfers heat well and is fine on a well-balanced chlorine pool, but it is the least forgiving of low pH, high chlorine and salt. On the Gulf Coast it is usually the first component to fail.
- Cupro-nickel
- Copper alloyed with nickel. It gives up a little heat transfer in exchange for much better resistance to unbalanced water chemistry and salt. On gas heaters this is the upgrade worth having in Florida, and some manufacturers now ship it as standard.
- NiTek (nickel alloy)
- A nickel-alloy exchanger used on some gas heaters as a corrosion-resistant alternative to copper. Positioned between cupro-nickel and titanium in both durability and price.
- Titanium
- Effectively immune to pool water chemistry, including salt. It is the standard on quality pool heat pumps and the reason a heat pump can sit on a salt pool for years without exchanger trouble. It is expensive, which is why you rarely see it on gas heaters.
Whatever the material, plumbing order matters just as much: a chlorinator or salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream.
How we scored it
- Warranty scores 4 and nearly scores higher. Raypak publishes three years parts and labor, the same term Pentair publishes on its ETi 400. It loses a point for the authorized-dealer condition, the exclusion of travel time and freight, and the drop to one year outside a single-family dwelling.
- Durability gets 3.5. Copper is the category baseline, but the straight-tube geometry, the stainless combustion chamber and the replaceable ProTek Shield anode are all genuine improvements on a plain copper heater. The NiTek version scores higher.
- 84% thermal efficiency matches the best conventional gas heaters from Hayward, Pentair and Jandy, and beats Raypak's own 82% Digital line.
- Serviceability is the soft spot. The cabinet opens from the top and the heater is designed as a drop-in replacement, but AVIA is a newer platform with a shorter field history than a Universal H-Series or a MasterTemp, and we could not verify a third-party review sample from any source we were able to fetch.
- Controls score 4 for having free Wi-Fi built in rather than sold as an accessory. It does not reach 5 because third-party automation still talks to it through a dry contact — the RS-485 port is for Raypak's own devices.
- Value is strong: three years parts and labor at a mid-range price tier, with app control included.
- Why our 3.9 sits below the 4.3 starter score in the comparison guide we work from: it is not the warranty, which scores a 4 here. The gap is durability and exchanger at 3.5 because the standard AVIA is copper — the HD with NiTek scores 4.5 — serviceability and parts at 3.5 because AVIA is a newer platform with a shorter Florida field record than a Universal H-Series or a MasterTemp and we could not verify a third-party review sample, and value at 4.0 rather than 5. Score durability and serviceability at 4.5 apiece, the level a long-proven platform earns, and the AVIA lands exactly on the guide's 4.3. The number measures coverage and field record, not build quality.

P-R264A-EN-C questions
What size pool does 264,000 BTU suit?
Most average residential pools on the Gulf Coast. It will hold a temperature comfortably and bring a pool up over an afternoon. If you have an attached spa you want ready quickly, step up to the 404A — same cabinet, same warranty, more burner.
What do the letters in P-R264A-EN-C mean?
264A is the size, EN is natural gas (EP is propane) and the final C is the copper heat exchanger. The same heater with a NiTek exchanger ends in N — P-R264A-EN-N, catalog number 018044.
Is it safe on a salt water pool?
With balanced water and correct plumbing order, yes — the salt cell or chlorinator has to be downstream of the heater, never upstream. Copper is the least corrosion-tolerant of the exchanger materials, though, so on a salt pool or a coastal lot the AVIA HD with NiTek is the version worth pricing.
Do I need pool automation to control it from my phone?
No, and that is one of the better things about the AVIA. Raymote Wi-Fi is built into the heater, so temperature control and a heat-time estimate are on your phone without an automation panel. If you already own a third-party automation system, it connects to the heater as a two-wire or three-wire remote the same way any gas heater does.
What does the three-year warranty actually cover?
Parts and labor for three years on residential single-family installations. Raypak does not cover travel time, freight or fuel costs, drops the term to one year if the heater is installed anywhere other than a single-family dwelling, and states that the warranty applies only to heaters bought from an authorized U.S. dealer.
