Why homeowners consider it
- It carries Jandy's 84% EnergyGuide thermal efficiency rating, the same figure as the 400,000 BTU model and at the top of what a current low-NOx, non-condensing pool heater delivers. The 200,000 BTU JXi is labeled 83%, so 260 is the smallest JXi that gets the better number. (The JXi is not an atmospheric heater: its manual describes a venturi-type combustion system that self-compensates for changes in barometric pressure.)
- The cabinet is the same size as every other JXi — 22.1 inches wide, 21.6 inches deep and 26.5 inches high — so the small unit takes no less space than the big one but fits the same 2 ft by 2 ft pad footprint on a crowded Sarasota side yard.
- Gas piping is far more forgiving than the 400. Jandy's own table allows 50 feet of 1-inch natural gas pipe to a JXi260 where a JXi400 gets only 20 feet, which on a retrofit is often the difference between reusing the existing line and trenching a new one.
- It talks to automation properly. A four-pin RS-485 connection puts the heater on a Jandy AquaLink system as a smart device rather than a relay, and from there it is controllable in the iAquaLink app.
- Service access is good for the size: the top cover lifts off and can be rotated 180 degrees, and the electrical raceway swings up out of the way, which matters when the heater is wedged between a filter and a wall.
What to know before buying
- The published warranty is one year. Jandy's limited warranty covers JXi heaters for one year with no labor coverage, and the five-year heat-exchanger term applies only to models with VersaFlo factory-installed — which the 260 standard SKU is not. If warranty length matters to you, price the VersaFlo version or a different brand before deciding.
- The standard exchanger is copper, and Jandy's own documents disagree about the cupro-nickel upgrade in this size. Section 12.3 of the JXi manual lists JXI260NN and JXI260PN alongside JXI400NN and JXI400PN as cupro-nickel models, and the spare-parts table carries a dedicated 260 CuNi column; the 2024 catalog addendum prints cupro-nickel part numbers only in the 400 size, and we could not find a 260 cupro-nickel listing in the distribution channel. On a salt pool or a coastal lot, get written confirmation from the distributor that a cupro-nickel 260 is orderable before you budget for one.
- It needs 30 GPM through the heat exchanger and will not tolerate more than 100 GPM. On a variable-speed pump the heating speed has to be programmed high enough to satisfy the water pressure switch, which is factory set to 7 psi.
- Natural gas has to be at the address. Large parts of Sarasota and Manatee County have no gas main, which pushes you to the propane JXI260P plus a tank and a delivery contract — and Jandy states that indoor installation is not recommended for liquid propane heaters.
- Jandy's warranty does not apply to product bought through the internet or other e-commerce platforms, and it requires installation and service by a licensed, qualified pool professional. Buying the box online to save a few hundred dollars can cost you the warranty entirely.
- Outdoor operating ambient is published down to 40°F. Below freezing, Jandy asks for the heater to be in a protected outdoor shelter.
Warranty, term by term
The warranty only matters on the parts that actually fail. Here is how this one splits up.
- Parts
- 1 year
Jandy's published limited warranty covers JXi heaters for one year from retail purchase. There is no labor coverage at all: the document states Fluidra's liability does not include costs for labor to service or repair the product. The five-year term applies to the heat exchanger only, and only when VersaFlo is factory-installed. The warranty does not apply to Jandy products purchased through the internet or other e-commerce platforms, and it applies only to products installed and serviced by a licensed, qualified pool professional. Anything installed outside a single-family dwelling drops to one year. Professional installation / authorized-channel requirements may apply.
Why the heat exchanger matters
The heat exchanger is the part of a pool heater that actually moves heat into the water, and what it is made of decides how long the heater survives Florida water chemistry. Here is what the four materials mean in practice.
- CopperThis heater
- The traditional material and the cheapest to build. It transfers heat well and is fine on a well-balanced chlorine pool, but it is the least forgiving of low pH, high chlorine and salt. On the Gulf Coast it is usually the first component to fail.
- Cupro-nickel
- Copper alloyed with nickel. It gives up a little heat transfer in exchange for much better resistance to unbalanced water chemistry and salt. On gas heaters this is the upgrade worth having in Florida, and some manufacturers now ship it as standard.
- NiTek (nickel alloy)
- A nickel-alloy exchanger used on some gas heaters as a corrosion-resistant alternative to copper. Positioned between cupro-nickel and titanium in both durability and price.
- Titanium
- Effectively immune to pool water chemistry, including salt. It is the standard on quality pool heat pumps and the reason a heat pump can sit on a salt pool for years without exchanger trouble. It is expensive, which is why you rarely see it on gas heaters.
Whatever the material, plumbing order matters just as much: a chlorinator or salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream.
How we scored it
- Warranty is the weak point and it is the reason this lands below the 4.6 starter score in the comparison guide we work from. Jandy publishes one year on JXi heaters with no labor coverage, against three years parts on a Hayward Universal H-Series and three years parts and labor on a Raypak AVIA. That is a verified, material difference, not a matter of opinion.
- Durability scores a flat 3: a copper fin-tube exchanger is the category baseline, and the cupro-nickel upgrade is hard to pin down in this size — the JXi manual lists JXI260NN and JXI260PN, but Jandy's 2024 catalog addendum prints cupro-nickel part numbers only for the 400, so we cannot promise a buyer the corrosion upgrade here without a distributor confirming it in writing.
- Performance is strong. 84% thermal efficiency on Jandy's own EnergyGuide label is level with Hayward and Pentair's best gas heaters and ahead of Raypak's Digital line.
- Serviceability is good — the top lifts off and rotates, the raceway swings up, and JXi parts are stocked widely in Florida. Half a point comes off for the Rev G / Rev H parts split, where flue sensor and power interface board kits differ by serial-number revision.
- Controls are a genuine strength: a real RS-485 connection into AquaLink rather than a dumb relay, with iAquaLink app control once the automation system is there.
- Value sits mid-pack. It is a well-built, compact heater at a mid-range installed price, held back by a one-year warranty on a product that should last a decade.

JXI260N questions
What size pool is a 260,000 BTU heater right for?
It suits most average residential pools on the Gulf Coast, and a pool with a modest attached spa. Surface area, whether the pool is screened, how exposed the lot is and how fast you want to heat matter more than gallons, so we size against the actual pool rather than from a chart.
What is the difference between JXI260N and JXI260P?
Fuel. N is natural gas and P is liquid propane. The heaters are otherwise the same, but gas pressure requirements and pipe sizing differ, and Jandy states that indoor installation is not recommended for liquid propane heaters.
Is a copper heat exchanger a problem on a salt water pool?
It is a consideration rather than a disqualification. Copper is the category baseline and works fine with balanced water, but it is less tolerant of drifting chemistry than cupro-nickel or NiTek. The plumbing order matters more than the material: the salt cell or chlorinator has to sit downstream of the heater, never upstream. If you want a corrosion-resistant exchanger from Jandy, the JXi manual lists cupro-nickel models in both sizes — JXI260NN and JXI260PN as well as JXI400NN and JXI400PN — but the 2024 catalog addendum only prints cupro-nickel part numbers for the 400, so ask your distributor to confirm in writing that a cupro-nickel 260 can actually be ordered.
Does it work with pool automation?
Yes. The JXi accepts a two-wire or three-wire remote, and it also has a four-pin RS-485 connection that puts it on a Jandy AquaLink system as a smart device. App control comes from the iAquaLink app through that automation system — the heater itself has no Wi-Fi.
What does the warranty actually cover?
One year from retail purchase on the heater, parts only. Jandy's warranty document states it does not cover labor to service or repair the product, does not apply to units bought through the internet or e-commerce platforms, and requires a licensed, qualified installer. The five-year heat-exchanger term applies only to JXi heaters with VersaFlo factory-installed.
Do you install Jandy gas heaters in Sarasota?
Yes. We install and service Jandy gas heaters throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida. This comparison page is written for pool owners anywhere; the installation offer is local.
Is the JXI260N right for your pool?
