Jandy Pool Heaters
Jandy is the pool equipment brand of Zodiac Pool Systems, a Fluidra company. Its heating line is short and deliberate: JXi gas heaters at 200,000, 260,000 and 399,000 BTU/hr, the instrumented JXiQ version of the same heater, and the VersaTemp JRT heat/chill heat pumps from 103,000 to 160,000 BTU/hr. The heaters are the most compact in their output class, they connect to Jandy AquaLink automation over RS-485 rather than through a relay, and the published warranty is one year on JXi gas heaters with no labor coverage, and two years on heat pumps.
Jandy heaters turn up constantly on newer Gulf Coast builds, usually because the pool was designed around a Jandy AquaLink system and the heater, pump, valve actuators and salt cell were all specified together. That is the brand's real proposition: not that the heater is cheaper or more efficient than the alternatives, but that it behaves like a component of a system rather than a box an automation panel switches on.
The gas line is the JXi, in 200,000, 260,000 and 399,000 BTU/hr sizes for natural gas or propane. It is genuinely compact — a 22-inch-wide cabinet that fits a 2 ft by 2 ft pad, with body dimensions identical across all three sizes, which is why it is so often the answer on a crowded Florida equipment pad where a larger heater physically will not go. Jandy's EnergyGuide labels rate the 260 and 400 copper models at 84% thermal efficiency, level with the best conventional gas heaters on the market, and the 200 at 83%.
Above the JXi sits the JXiQ, which is the same burner and the same 84% efficiency with a sensor package around it: inlet and outlet water temperature sensors that measure the rise across the heat exchanger and fault if it drifts, a flue temperature sensor, a low gas pressure sensor, a factory sacrificial anode, a display 50% larger that shows 80 characters and estimates how long the water will take to reach setpoint, and Bluetooth diagnostics a technician can read in the Fluidra Pro app. Every non-ASME JXiQ also ships with VersaFlo factory-installed — an integrated bypass that routes water around the heat exchanger when the heater is not firing — and that is what earns the five-year heat exchanger warranty.
On the electric side, VersaTemp JRT is a heat and chill heat pump line with a titanium twisted-coil exchanger in an ABS cabinet, a scroll compressor, hot gas defrost and SoundShield noise reduction. The single-phase models run from 103,000 to 160,000 BTU/hr at the AHRI 80/80/80 test point; the 160,000 BTU/hr JRT4001R is the addition in Jandy's 2026 brochure and catalog addendum, and the three smaller sizes are still listed beside it. Chill is standard on every model rather than a separate SKU, which matters in Florida more than in most markets. The weak point across the whole brand is warranty length: Jandy publishes one year on JXi heaters and two years on heat pumps, with no labor coverage anywhere, and its warranty does not apply to product bought through the internet or other e-commerce platforms. That last clause is not a footnote — it is the difference between a covered heater and an uncovered one.

What Jandy builds
JXi
Gas heaterLow-NOx natural gas and propane heaters at 200,000, 260,000 and 399,000 BTU/hr, with a copper fin-tube exchanger and polymer headers as standard and a cupro-nickel option. The JXi manual lists cupro-nickel models in both the 260 and the 400 size (JXI260NN/JXI260PN and JXI400NN/JXI400PN), while Jandy's 2024 catalog addendum prints cupro-nickel part numbers only for the 400 — ask a distributor to confirm in writing what is orderable. 84% thermal efficiency on the 260 and 400 copper models, 83% on the 200 and on the cupro-nickel 400. Identical 22-inch cabinet across all three sizes.
JXi with VersaFlo
Gas heaterThe same heater with Jandy's integrated bypass factory-installed, denoted by a K in the model number. The bypass routes water around the heat exchanger when the heater is not firing, cutting head loss for a variable-speed pump, and it is what raises the heat exchanger warranty from one year to five. Watch the part number: Jandy's model key defines K for both series, but the 2024 catalog addendum's ordering tables list factory VersaFlo only on JXiQ numbers (JXIQ200NK, JXIQ260NK, JXIQ400NK and the propane equivalents), and distributors report shipping a JXiQ400NK against a JXi400NK order. To add the bypass to a JXi you already own, the part is the JXIVFKIT retrofit kit.
JXiQ
Gas heaterThe instrumented version: the same burner and 84% efficiency plus temperature-rise monitoring across the exchanger, flue and gas pressure sensors, a factory sacrificial anode, an 80-character display with a heat-up time estimate, Bluetooth service diagnostics in the Fluidra Pro app, and VersaFlo factory-installed on every non-ASME model.
JXi and JXiQ ASME
Gas heaterCommercial variants with corrosion-resistant bronze headers and what Jandy describes as robust copper or cupro-nickel heat exchanger tubes, denoted by a C or S suffix (JXiQ400NC, JXiQ260NS). Warranted for one year in commercial applications. These are the models specified for apartment, HOA and hotel pools rather than single-family homes.
VersaTemp JRT Series
Electric heat pumpHeat and chill heat pumps with a titanium twisted-coil exchanger, ABS cabinet, scroll compressor, hot gas defrost and SoundShield noise reduction. Jandy's 2026 brochure lists five models, all rated at the AHRI 80/80/80 test point: JRT2000R (103,000 BTU/hr, COP 6.4), JRT2500R (116,000, COP 6.5), JRT3000R (130,000, COP 5.8), the three-phase JRT3000R3 (130,000, COP 6.1) and JRT4001R (160,000, COP 5.9). The JRT4001R has its own installation manual, which rates it at 148,000 BTU/hr and COP 5.7 at 80/63/80 and 101,000 BTU/hr and COP 4.4 at the 50°F low test point, on a 208-230 volt single-phase supply with a 50 A minimum circuit ampacity at 230 VAC (55 A at 208 VAC) and 70 A maximum over-current protection. It takes 30 to 80 GPM of water flow, weighs 347 lbs and uses R-454B refrigerant, where the smaller models' manual specifies R-410A.

What we like
- The most compact gas heaters in their output class. A JXi fits a 2 ft by 2 ft pad and the cabinet is the same size whether it is a 200,000 or a 399,000 BTU/hr unit, which repeatedly makes it the only heater that physically fits on a tight Florida equipment pad.
- 84% thermal efficiency on Jandy's own EnergyGuide labels for the 260 and 400 copper models — level with the best conventional gas heaters from Hayward and Pentair, and ahead of Raypak's Digital line.
- Automation integration is a real data connection, not a relay. A four-pin RS-485 link puts a JXi, JXiQ or VersaTemp onto a Jandy AquaLink system as a smart device, with iAquaLink app control from there, and on the VersaTemp that link can switch the unit between heating and chilling remotely.
- The JXiQ is the best-instrumented gas heater we rate. Measuring the temperature rise across the heat exchanger catches the low-flow conditions that actually kill exchangers, and Bluetooth diagnostics in the Fluidra Pro app give a technician live sensor data without a meter.
- VersaFlo is a genuinely useful piece of engineering rather than a badge. Routing water around the exchanger when the heater is idle lowers head loss for a variable-speed pump all year, and Jandy backs the idea with a five-times-longer heat exchanger warranty on factory-installed units.
- Chill is standard across the VersaTemp line, with a titanium exchanger and an ABS cabinet — the right combination for salt pools and coastal air, and the right feature set for a Florida pool that gets too warm in August.
What to know before buying
- The published warranty is short, and it is worth reading before you buy: one year on JXi heaters, two years on heat pumps (five on the heat pump compressor and exchanger), and five years on a gas heat exchanger only when VersaFlo is factory-installed. Hayward publishes three years parts on its gas heaters and Raypak publishes three years parts and labor.
- There is no labor coverage at all. Jandy's warranty document states plainly that liability does not include costs for labor to service or repair the product, so a covered part still comes with a service bill.
- Jandy's warranty does not apply to product purchased through the internet or other e-commerce platforms, and it requires installation and service by a licensed, qualified pool professional. Buying the heater online to save money can void the coverage entirely.
- The corrosion upgrade is hard to pin down. The JXi manual lists cupro-nickel models in both the 260 and the 400 size, but Jandy's 2024 catalog addendum prints cupro-nickel part numbers only for the 400, so what you can actually order has to be confirmed with a distributor — and the cupro-nickel model is labeled a point lower on thermal efficiency (83% versus 84%) than the copper one. Raypak and Hayward both offer more corrosion-resistant exchangers across more of their range.
- App control depends on owning the ecosystem. Neither the JXi nor the VersaTemp has Wi-Fi of its own — iAquaLink control requires a Jandy AquaLink automation system. Raypak builds free Wi-Fi into the heater itself.
- Jandy's own documents do not always agree with each other. The JXi manual's parts section references 260-size cupro-nickel models that the 2024 catalog addendum does not list, and Jandy publishes no minimum operating ambient temperature for the VersaTemp heat pumps. The 2026 VersaTemp brochure says the 160,000 BTU/hr JRT4001R runs on a 50 amp breaker, while its own specification table gives a 50 A minimum circuit ampacity at 230 VAC, 55 A at 208 VAC and 70 A maximum over-current protection — and the manual states the breaker must not be smaller than the minimum circuit ampacity, so the 50 amp figure holds on a 230-volt supply only. Confirm anything unusual with the distributor before ordering.
Jandy questions
Who owns Jandy?
Zodiac Pool Systems LLC, which is a Fluidra company — Jandy's own limited warranty document is issued in exactly those words. Fluidra is a global pool equipment group, and Jandy is its principal North American residential brand alongside Polaris and AquaLink automation.
What is the difference between JXi and JXiQ?
Sensors and a screen, not heat. Both use the same burner and carry the same 84% thermal efficiency rating on the 260 and 400 sizes. The JXiQ adds inlet and outlet water sensors that monitor the temperature rise across the heat exchanger, flue and gas pressure sensors, a factory sacrificial anode, a display 50% larger with a heat-up time estimate, Bluetooth service diagnostics, and VersaFlo factory-installed — which brings a five-year heat exchanger warranty.
Is VersaFlo a separate heater?
No. VersaFlo is an integrated bypass inside a JXi or JXiQ header that routes water around the heat exchanger when the heater is not firing, so a variable-speed pump sees far less head loss. It is factory-installed on every non-ASME JXiQ. Jandy's model key also defines the factory-VersaFlo K suffix for the JXi, but the ordering tables in the 2024 catalog addendum list no JXi…NK part number, so confirm with the distributor before asking for one. It is also sold as a retrofit kit (JXIVFKIT) for 200, 260 and 400 heaters.
How long is the Jandy warranty?
One year on JXi gas heaters and two years on heat pumps, with heat pump compressors and heat exchangers at five years, and gas heat exchangers at five years only when VersaFlo is factory-installed. Labor is not covered at all, the warranty does not apply to product bought online, and anything installed outside a single-family dwelling drops to one year.
Do Jandy heaters work with non-Jandy automation?
Yes, at the basic level. Every JXi, JXiQ and VersaTemp accepts a two-wire or three-wire remote, which is how a third-party automation panel switches a heater on and off and hands it a setpoint. The RS-485 smart connection, the diagnostics it carries and iAquaLink app control are specific to Jandy AquaLink systems.
