Why homeowners consider it
- The heat exchanger is warranted for five years, not one. Every non-ASME JXiQ ships with VersaFlo factory-installed — that is what the K in JXIQ400NK means — and Jandy's limited warranty gives factory-VersaFlo heat exchangers five years. It is the only way to get more than 12 months of coverage on any part of a Jandy gas heater.
- It is genuinely instrumented. Inlet and outlet water sensors measure the temperature rise across the exchanger and log a fault if it drifts outside the safe band, a flue temperature sensor shuts the heater down above 464°F, and a low gas pressure sensor checks there is enough gas to ignite before it tries.
- The display actually helps. Jandy's is 50% larger than the JXi's and shows 80 characters, and the heater calculates and displays how long it will take to reach the setpoint instead of leaving you guessing.
- A sacrificial anode is fitted from the factory on the inlet header to absorb galvanic and stray-current corrosion that would otherwise attack the exchanger tubes. It is a replaceable wear part, which is the point.
- Service diagnostics run over Bluetooth into Fluidra's Pro app, so a technician can read heater status, gas valve on time, cycle count, inlet and outlet water temperatures and pre-ignition state without a meter — and 84% thermal efficiency and the 399,000 BTU firing rate are unchanged from the standard JXi.
What to know before buying
- Everything except the heat exchanger is still a one-year warranty. The five-year term is exchanger-only; the control board, blower, gas valve, igniter and sensors carry Jandy's standard one year, with no labor coverage on anything.
- It is the most expensive way to buy 399,000 BTU from Jandy. You are paying for sensors, the larger display and the factory bypass — worthwhile if you value diagnostics and the exchanger warranty, hard to justify if the heater will be switched on twice a winter.
- The smart features do not replace automation. Bluetooth is for service diagnostics in the Fluidra Pro app; homeowner app control still needs a Jandy AquaLink system and the iAquaLink app. There is no standalone Wi-Fi control the way Raypak's Raymote works.
- Gas sizing is identical to the JXi400 and just as demanding: 20 feet of 1-inch natural gas pipe, 95 feet of 1-1/4 inch, and an 8-inch Category I vent connection.
- More sensors means more things that can report a fault. That is a net positive for reliability but it does mean a JXiQ will tell you about a marginal gas supply or a low flow rate that an older heater would have quietly tolerated until it failed.
- Jandy's warranty excludes e-commerce purchases and requires a licensed, qualified installer — which for a heater sold largely on its warranty is worth taking seriously.
Warranty, term by term
The warranty only matters on the parts that actually fail. Here is how this one splits up.
- Parts
- 1 year
- Heat exchanger
- 5 years (VersaFlo factory-installed)
Jandy's published limited warranty covers JXi heaters for one year from retail purchase. There is no labor coverage at all: the document states Fluidra's liability does not include costs for labor to service or repair the product. The five-year term applies to the heat exchanger only, and only when VersaFlo is factory-installed. The warranty does not apply to Jandy products purchased through the internet or other e-commerce platforms, and it applies only to products installed and serviced by a licensed, qualified pool professional. Anything installed outside a single-family dwelling drops to one year. Professional installation / authorized-channel requirements may apply.
Why the heat exchanger matters
The heat exchanger is the part of a pool heater that actually moves heat into the water, and what it is made of decides how long the heater survives Florida water chemistry. Here is what the four materials mean in practice.
- CopperThis heater
- The traditional material and the cheapest to build. It transfers heat well and is fine on a well-balanced chlorine pool, but it is the least forgiving of low pH, high chlorine and salt. On the Gulf Coast it is usually the first component to fail.
- Cupro-nickel
- Copper alloyed with nickel. It gives up a little heat transfer in exchange for much better resistance to unbalanced water chemistry and salt. On gas heaters this is the upgrade worth having in Florida, and some manufacturers now ship it as standard.
- NiTek (nickel alloy)
- A nickel-alloy exchanger used on some gas heaters as a corrosion-resistant alternative to copper. Positioned between cupro-nickel and titanium in both durability and price.
- Titanium
- Effectively immune to pool water chemistry, including salt. It is the standard on quality pool heat pumps and the reason a heat pump can sit on a salt pool for years without exchanger trouble. It is expensive, which is why you rarely see it on gas heaters.
Whatever the material, plumbing order matters just as much: a chlorinator or salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream.
How we scored it
- Warranty improves to a 3 because of the five-year heat-exchanger term that factory VersaFlo earns — but everything else is still one year with no labor, so it is a partial fix rather than a strong warranty.
- Durability gets 4: copper is still copper, but a factory sacrificial anode, temperature-rise monitoring that catches a low-flow condition before it cooks the exchanger, and a bypass that keeps water out of the exchanger when the heater is idle all genuinely extend its life.
- 84% thermal efficiency matches the best conventional gas heaters; the JXiQ's advantage over the JXi is instrumentation, not output.
- Serviceability is the best of any gas heater we rate: live sensor data on a large display, Bluetooth diagnostics in Fluidra Pro, and a cabinet whose top lifts off and rotates.
- Controls take a full 5. Nothing else in the gas category combines onboard instrumentation this detailed with a real RS-485 automation connection and app control.
- Value is where it gives ground. This is the priciest route to 399,000 BTU on this site, and the extra spend buys diagnostics and exchanger coverage rather than more heat.
- Why our 4.0 sits below the 4.6 starter score in the comparison guide: warranty and support is 25% of the formula, the largest single weight, and the JXiQ scores only 3 there because the five-year term covers the heat exchanger alone while the board, blower, gas valve and sensors stay at one year with no labor. Value takes 3.5 for the same reason the price is high. Score the warranty column the way we score a Raypak AVIA — a 4, for three years parts and labor — and the JXiQ lands at 4.2. The number measures the coverage and the cost you are carrying, not how well the heater is built.

JXIQ400NK questions
What does the Q in JXiQ actually add?
Sensors and a bigger screen. The JXiQ measures the temperature rise across the heat exchanger, monitors flue temperature, onboard air temperature and incoming gas pressure, estimates how long it will take to reach your setpoint, and hands all of it to a technician over Bluetooth in the Fluidra Pro app. The burner, firing rate and 84% thermal efficiency are the same as a JXi.
Why is the heat exchanger warranty five years on this one and one year on a JXi?
Because VersaFlo is factory-installed on every non-ASME JXiQ — the K in the model number. Jandy's limited warranty gives five years on heat exchangers in JXi gas heaters with factory-installed VersaFlo, and one year otherwise. Everything other than the exchanger is still one year.
Can I control it from my phone without a Jandy automation system?
Not as a homeowner. The Bluetooth link is for service diagnostics in the Fluidra Pro app. Day-to-day app control comes from the iAquaLink app, which requires a Jandy AquaLink automation system connected to the heater over RS-485.
Is it safe on a salt water pool?
The exchanger is copper, so water chemistry matters as much as it does on any gas heater — the salt cell or chlorinator belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream. The factory sacrificial anode helps with galvanic and stray-current corrosion, and the temperature-rise sensors catch the low-flow conditions that damage exchangers, but neither is a substitute for balanced water.
How big a pool does 399,000 BTU suit?
Large pools and pool-plus-spa combinations. If you have a spa you want hot inside an hour, this is the output class to be in; if you only heat a modest pool, the 260,000 BTU version costs less to install and asks less of the gas line.
Do you install Jandy JXiQ heaters in Sarasota?
