Jandy JXi400N vs Pentair MasterTemp 400 NG
Jandy JXi400N and Pentair MasterTemp 400 compared on BTU input, 84% efficiency, copper and cupro-nickel exchangers, warranty, automation and price tier.
Updated September 17, 2026 · Affordable Solar & Pool Heating, LLC · Owner/operator Henry Manna
These two burn almost the same gas through the same kind of exchanger at the same efficiency: 399,000 BTU/hr on the Jandy against 400,000 BTU/hr of input on the Pentair, copper standard on both, 84% thermal efficiency on both. Neither will heat your pool noticeably faster.
The separation is warranty and ecosystem. Pentair publishes 2 years parts and labor on a MasterTemp bought through a pool professional; Jandy publishes 1 year parts on a JXi, no labor at all, and no coverage whatsoever on a heater bought online. Both connect over RS-485 — the Jandy into AquaLink, the Pentair into IntelliCenter.
So match the heater to the automation on your pad. If there is none, Pentair's warranty makes the MasterTemp the safer default, the 400HD is the salt-pool answer, and the JXiQ400NK is the one to buy if you want the exchanger covered for five years.

Where they actually differ
Output and efficiency: closer than the badges suggest
Jandy's JXi400 fires at 399,000 BTU/hr and is marketed as a 400,000 BTU heater. Pentair's MasterTemp 400 is rated by input: its manual states the model size is the BTU input in thousands of BTU per hour, so it draws 400,000 BTU/hr of gas. A 1,000 BTU/hr difference on a 400,000 BTU appliance is not a reason to choose either one.
Thermal efficiency is 84% on both, on each manufacturer's own label — Jandy's EnergyGuide figure for the copper 260 and 400 models, Pentair's figure tested per ANSI Z21.56:19/CSA 4.7:19 section 5.10. The corrosion-resistant versions both give some back: Jandy labels the cupro-nickel JXI400NN at 83%, and Pentair rates the cupro-nickel MasterTemp 400HD at 82%.
Both manufacturers publish heat-up estimates, and both sets are lab figures rather than guarantees. Pentair's brochure gives the copper 400 4 hours 58 minutes to raise a 20,000-gallon pool by 10°F and 27 minutes to raise a 600-gallon spa by 30°F, with the 400HD at 5 hours 5 minutes and 28 minutes. Jandy's 2024 catalog addendum publishes a spa sizing chart rather than a pool heat-up time, and it puts the JXi400 at 27 minutes for the same 600-gallon spa and the same 30°F rise — the identical figure. On spa heating these two are level on their own numbers.
Warranty is the real gap — and it drives our ratings
Jandy's published limited warranty covers JXi heaters for one year from retail purchase, and the document states that liability does not include costs for labor to service or repair the product. There is no labor coverage at all. It also excludes product purchased through the internet or other e-commerce platforms and requires installation and service by a licensed, qualified pool professional.
The exception is the heat exchanger. Jandy warrants the exchanger for five years when VersaFlo is factory-installed — which is what the K in JXIQ400NK means, and every non-ASME JXiQ ships that way. It is the only route to more than twelve months of coverage on any part of a Jandy gas heater, and the board, blower, gas valve, igniter and sensors are all still one year.
Pentair's warranty table gives MasterTemp 2 years parts and labor when the heater is bought from a brick-and-mortar retailer, pool builder or pool service company and installed by a qualified professional who charges a fee. Buy the same heater from an internet retailer and it drops to 1 year parts only, with no labor. Pentair also publishes a bundle: a qualifying pump, filter and heater installed together all go to 3 years. Registration is required either way, and the HD upgrade buys hardware, not a longer term.
Both brands, then, punish an online purchase — Jandy by voiding the warranty outright, Pentair by cutting it to one year parts. In the professional channel the difference is two years of parts and labor against one year of parts.
That single difference is also what separates these heaters on our rating card, because warranty and support is 25% of our formula — the largest weight on it. The JXi400N comes out at 3.6 out of 5 against 4.2 for the MasterTemp 400 NG, 4.0 for the JXiQ400NK and 4.3 for the MasterTemp 400HD.
It is worth being explicit about what that does and does not mean. Give the JXi400N the same warranty subscore we give the MasterTemp and the gap closes to three-tenths of a point; the two tie at 4.5 on performance and efficiency and at 3.5 on durability, the JXiQ ties Pentair at a full 5 on controls, and Pentair's remaining lead is serviceability and value, mainly because the MasterTemp is the gas heater our technicians open most often in this market. The score is a judgment about the risk you are carrying, not about how well the heater is built.
Automation: two closed ecosystems that behave the same way
Neither heater has Wi-Fi of its own. Both are designed to be driven by their own manufacturer's automation over RS-485, and both fall back to a simple switched connection for anything else.
The Jandy takes a two-wire or three-wire remote, or a four-pin RS-485 connection to AquaLink RS, PDA and Z4 systems, which puts it on the system as a smart device. Homeowner app control comes from iAquaLink through that automation system.
The Pentair has an RS-485 COM port that connects directly to an IntelliCenter Control System — up to 16 heaters on addresses 1 through 16, with the heater's own buttons going inactive and its alarms appearing on the IntelliCenter home screen. IntelliTouch, EasyTouch, IntelliConnect and a plain time clock all use the 2-wire fireman's switch terminals instead.
The practical rule is the same either way: mixing brands gets you on/off control, and staying inside one brand gets you diagnostics and app control. If your pad is already Jandy or already Pentair, that usually settles this comparison before any of the specs do.
What the JXiQ adds, and what the MasterTemp already has
The JXiQ is the same burner and the same 84% efficiency with instrumentation wrapped around it: inlet and outlet water sensors that measure the temperature rise across the exchanger and fault if it drifts outside the safe band, a flue temperature sensor that shuts the heater down above 464°F, a low gas pressure sensor that checks there is enough gas before it tries to light, dual high-limit switches at 135°F and 150°F, and a factory sacrificial anode on the inlet header. The display is 50% larger than the JXi's, shows 80 characters, and estimates how long the water will take to reach setpoint.
Service diagnostics run over Bluetooth into Fluidra's Pro app, so a technician can read heater status, gas valve on time, cycle count, inlet and outlet water temperatures and pre-ignition state without a meter. That is a genuine advantage on a service call — but it is a technician tool, not homeowner app control, which still needs an AquaLink system.
The MasterTemp is not undiagnosed by comparison. Its two-line LCD keeps the last five errors along with total runtime, on/off cycles, live stack flue temperature and flame sensor status, and with an IntelliCenter system those faults show up on the automation home screen rather than on a panel behind the hedge. The JXiQ measures more; the MasterTemp reports what it has further.
Gas line, flow, venting and the footprint
Gas pipe sizing is the most common reason a 400,000 BTU heater swap costs more than the quote, and both brands are demanding. Jandy allows 20 feet of 1-inch natural gas pipe, 95 feet of 1-1/4 inch or 215 feet of 1-1/2 inch, with 3/4-inch pipe permitted only for the first 5 feet from the gas valve. Pentair allows 1 inch to 20 equivalent feet, 1-1/4 inch to 100 feet and 1-1/2 inch to 200 feet, adding 3 feet of equivalent length for every elbow. An existing line sized for an older 250,000 BTU heater usually will not feed either of these.
Water flow is where they differ usefully. The Jandy needs 30 GPM minimum and tolerates up to 100 GPM, with the water pressure switch factory set to 7 psi. The Pentair needs 40 GPM minimum and up to 120 GPM before a bypass valve is required. On a variable-speed pump, 30 GPM is a lower, quieter, cheaper heating speed than 40.
Venting and size favor the Jandy on a tight pad. The JXi takes an 8-inch Category I vent connection in a cabinet 22.1 inches wide, 21.6 deep and 26.5 high — the same body dimensions as the 200,000 BTU model. The MasterTemp is 23.02 by 21.0 by 28.15 inches at 136 pounds carton weight, vents through its built-in stackless system outdoors, and needs 6 inches from combustible surfaces, 3 feet between the exhaust vent and any roof overhang and 36 inches from an air conditioner or heat pump. Pentair also states that anchor clamps are required in Florida, using the Bolt Down Bracket Kit P/N 460738.
Two more limits worth knowing. Jandy publishes a minimum outdoor operating ambient of 40°F and asks for a protected outdoor shelter below freezing. Pentair warns that running a MasterTemp continuously with water below 68°F causes harmful condensation, damages the heater and voids the warranty — which is the reason a gas heater is not freeze protection.
Salt pools and the corrosion upgrade
Copper is standard on both heaters, and copper is the category baseline rather than a coastal specification. On a salt pool, a pool close to the water, or a pool whose chemistry is not watched closely, the upgrade is worth pricing on either brand.
Jandy's version is the JXI400NN (natural gas) or JXI400PN (propane), a cupro-nickel exchanger labeled at 83% rather than 84%. Pentair's version is the MasterTemp 400HD, P/N 460805, cupro-nickel at 82% — and natural gas only, because Pentair publishes no propane part number for any HD variant. If you are on propane and want cupro-nickel, Jandy is the one of these two that can supply it.
Neither material is immunity. Pentair's manual is blunt that chlorine tablets in the skimmer and chemical feeders plumbed upstream of the heater will damage the exchanger regardless of what it is made of, and Jandy's manual states that damage to the heat exchanger by corrosive water is not covered. The salt cell goes downstream of the heater, always.
Which one for which job
The same six questions we would ask on a site visit, answered for these products.
If you need
Fast spa heating
Our pick
Either — both manufacturers publish 27 minutes for a 600-gallon spa at a 30°F rise; decide on warranty and automation instead
Why
Jandy's 2024 catalog addendum sizing chart puts the JXi400 at 27 minutes to raise a 600-gallon spa by 30°F, and Pentair's brochure publishes 27 minutes for the MasterTemp 400 on the identical job, so nothing separates these two on speed.
If you need
Everyday Florida pool heating
Our pick
Neither — an electric heat pump
Why
Both of these burn 400,000 BTU/hr of gas at 84% efficiency, while a titanium heat pump at COP 5.7 to 6.0 costs a fraction as much to hold a Gulf Coast pool at temperature all winter.
If you need
Heat and cool
Our pick
Neither — no gas heater cools
Why
Cooling needs a reverse-cycle heat pump such as the Hayward HP31405T or the GulfStream HE150-TA; see our GulfStream vs Hayward heat pump comparison or the heat-pump hub.
If you need
Premium efficiency
Our pick
Neither — the Pentair ETi 400
Why
Everything in this table sits between 82% and 84% thermal efficiency, where Pentair's ETi 400 is rated 96% on the same test standard.
If you need
Corrosion-resistant exchanger
Our pick
Why
Cupro-nickel at 82% thermal efficiency is the strongest exchanger in this table — with the caveat that it is natural gas only, so a propane salt pool needs Jandy's cupro-nickel JXI400PN instead.
If you need
Automation ecosystem
Our pick
Pentair MasterTemp 400 NG — or the Jandy JXi400N on a Jandy pad
Why
The MasterTemp's RS-485 COM port puts up to 16 heaters on an IntelliCenter with their alarms on the home screen, and the JXi's four-pin RS-485 link does the equivalent job on AquaLink with iAquaLink app control.

Common questions
Is the Jandy really a 400,000 BTU heater?
It fires at 399,000 BTU/hr and Jandy markets it as 400,000 BTU. Pentair's MasterTemp 400 is rated at 400,000 BTU/hr of input, which its manual defines as the model size in thousands of BTU per hour. Both put 84% of what they burn into the water, so the practical difference is nothing.
Which one has the better warranty?
Pentair, clearly, through the professional channel: 2 years parts and labor against Jandy's 1 year parts with no labor coverage at all. Jandy's only longer term is five years on the heat exchanger when VersaFlo is factory-installed, which is standard on every non-ASME JXiQ. Both warranties are cut or voided by an online purchase, so confirm the channel with whoever quotes you.
Why does the Jandy score lower on your rating card?
Because warranty and support is 25% of our formula, and Jandy publishes 1 year parts with no labor on a JXi against Pentair's 2 years parts and labor on a MasterTemp. The JXi400N comes out at 3.6 out of 5 against 4.2 for the MasterTemp 400 NG. Score the two heaters with the same warranty subscore and the gap closes to three-tenths — the JXi is a well-engineered, compact heater with a genuinely good automation connection, and our number is a judgment about coverage rather than construction.
Which one fits a tight equipment pad better?
The Jandy. Its cabinet is 22.1 inches wide by 21.6 deep by 26.5 high and is the same size on every JXi, against 23.02 by 21.0 by 28.15 inches on the MasterTemp. The Jandy also needs only 30 GPM of flow against Pentair's 40 GPM, and its top cover lifts off and rotates 180 degrees so the flue and headers can be reoriented instead of re-plumbed.
What does the JXiQ add over a standard JXi400N?
Sensors, a bigger screen and a longer exchanger warranty — not more heat. It measures the temperature rise across the exchanger, monitors flue temperature and incoming gas pressure, carries a factory sacrificial anode, shows 80 characters with a heat-up time estimate, and hands live data to a technician over Bluetooth in the Fluidra Pro app. Firing rate and 84% efficiency are unchanged, and everything except the heat exchanger is still a one-year warranty.
Do you install both brands in Sarasota?
Yes. We install and service Jandy and Pentair gas heaters throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida, and we will tell you honestly which one suits your pad, your gas line and your automation. This comparison is written for pool owners anywhere; the installation offer is local.
Still not sure? We will tell you which one we would fit.
We install both sides of most of these comparisons, which means we have no reason to steer you. Send us the pool details and we will give you a straight answer — and a quote if you are on Florida's Gulf Coast.
