Optional Smart Heater Bypass Kit P/N 462048. |
| Florida anchoring | Bolt Down Bracket Kit P/N 460738; Pentair states anchor clamps are required in Florida |
Why homeowners consider it
- The cupro-nickel heat exchanger is the whole point. Pentair describes the HD as built for more challenging applications — low pH, high flow, heavy use — which is a fair description of a salt pool on a barrier island.
- Everything else is the standard MasterTemp: same cabinet, same LCD with five-error history, same RS-485 automation port, same parts bin. You are upgrading one component, not learning a new heater.
- Full 400,000 BTU/hr input, so it still does the job gas is for. Pentair estimates 5 hours 5 minutes to raise a 20,000-gallon pool by 10°F and 28 minutes for a 600-gallon spa by 30°F — seven minutes and one minute behind the copper version.
- Automation is the same best-in-class story: an RS-485 connection to IntelliCenter makes the heater a network device with its alarms on the automation home screen.
- It costs meaningfully less than a titanium ETi 400 while solving most of the same corrosion problem, which makes it the practical coastal choice for a lot of pools.
What to know before buying
- Natural gas only. Pentair's model table shows no propane part number for any HD variant — 250HD, 400HD or the HD ASME versions. If your address has no gas main, the HD is off the table and you are choosing between the propane MasterTemp 400 (copper) or another brand.
- You give up 2 points of efficiency: 82% versus 84% for the copper version. Over a season of heavy use that is real money, and it is the honest trade for the exchanger.
- Gas line sizing is the same demanding job as the copper 400: 1 inch pipe only to 20 equivalent feet, 1-1/4 inch to 100 feet, 1-1/2 inch to 200 feet, plus 3 feet per elbow.
- 40 GPM minimum flow, 120 GPM maximum. A variable-speed pump needs a dedicated heating speed programmed for it.
- Cupro-nickel buys corrosion margin, not immunity. Pentair's manual is blunt that chlorine tablets in the skimmer and chemical feeders plumbed upstream of the heater will damage the exchanger regardless of material.
- Warranty is still 2 years parts and labor through the professional channel, with the same 1-year-parts-only outcome for an internet purchase. The HD upgrade does not buy a longer term.
Warranty, term by term
The warranty only matters on the parts that actually fail. Here is how this one splits up.
- Parts
- 2 years
- Labor
- 2 years
Pentair's published warranty table gives MasterTemp 2 years parts and labor when the heater is bought through a brick-and-mortar retailer, pool builder or pool service company AND installed by a qualified professional who charges a fee. A heater bought from an internet retailer is covered for 1 year parts only, with no labor. Pentair also publishes a bundle: install a qualifying pump, filter and heater together and all three go to 3 years. Registration is required. MasterTemp is a TradeGrade product, which is Pentair's professional-channel line. Professional installation and authorized-channel requirements apply.
Why the heat exchanger matters
The heat exchanger is the part of a pool heater that actually moves heat into the water, and what it is made of decides how long the heater survives Florida water chemistry. Here is what the four materials mean in practice.
- Copper
- The traditional material and the cheapest to build. It transfers heat well and is fine on a well-balanced chlorine pool, but it is the least forgiving of low pH, high chlorine and salt. On the Gulf Coast it is usually the first component to fail.
- Cupro-nickelThis heater
- Copper alloyed with nickel. It gives up a little heat transfer in exchange for much better resistance to unbalanced water chemistry and salt. On gas heaters this is the upgrade worth having in Florida, and some manufacturers now ship it as standard.
- NiTek (nickel alloy)
- A nickel-alloy exchanger used on some gas heaters as a corrosion-resistant alternative to copper. Positioned between cupro-nickel and titanium in both durability and price.
- Titanium
- Effectively immune to pool water chemistry, including salt. It is the standard on quality pool heat pumps and the reason a heat pump can sit on a salt pool for years without exchanger trouble. It is expensive, which is why you rarely see it on gas heaters.
Whatever the material, plumbing order matters just as much: a chlorinator or salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream.
How we scored it
- Warranty is unchanged from the copper MasterTemp — 2 years parts and labor, professional channel only — so the HD upgrade buys hardware, not coverage.
- Durability is where the money goes. A cupro-nickel exchanger in a polymer cabinet is the right specification for a Gulf Coast salt pool and the reason to choose this SKU at all.
- Performance drops half a point against the copper 400: 82% rather than 84%, and Pentair's own heat-up chart shows the HD seven minutes slower on a 20,000-gallon pool.
- Serviceability is identical to the rest of the line and is the strongest thing about owning a MasterTemp in this market.
- Controls score a full 5 on the RS-485 IntelliCenter connection, exactly as on the copper models.
- Value is good: the HD premium is far smaller than the jump to a titanium ETi 400 and solves most of the same corrosion problem, which is why we quote it often on coastal pools.

MasterTemp 400HD questions
What does HD actually mean on a MasterTemp?
Heavy Duty, and specifically a cupro-nickel heat exchanger in place of the standard copper one. Pentair's catalog describes it as being for more challenging applications such as low pH, high flow or heavy use. The trade is efficiency: 82% instead of 84%.
Can I get a MasterTemp HD on propane?
No. Pentair's own model table lists a natural gas part number for every HD variant and no propane part number for any of them. If you are on propane, your Pentair options are the copper MasterTemp 400 (P/N 460737) or, with a conversion kit, the ETi 400.
Is cupro-nickel worth the efficiency loss on a salt pool?
In our market, usually yes. Two points of efficiency is a small, steady cost; replacing a corroded heat exchanger is a large, sudden one. The bigger factor either way is plumbing order and chemistry — the salt cell or chemical feeder must sit downstream of the heater with a check valve, whatever the exchanger is made of.
How does it compare to the Pentair ETi 400?
The ETi 400 uses a direct-fire titanium exchanger at 96% thermal efficiency and carries 3 years parts and labor, but it is a condensing heater with condensate to manage, a higher price tier and no RS-485 automation port. The 400HD is the cheaper, simpler, more widely serviced way to get a corrosion-resistant exchanger.
Does it join a Pentair automation system?
Yes, the same way the rest of the MasterTemp line does: an RS-485 COM port wires straight to an IntelliCenter Control System, and IntelliTouch, EasyTouch, IntelliConnect or a time clock use the 2-wire fireman's switch terminals.
Do you install this heater in Sarasota?
Yes. We install and service Pentair gas heaters throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida. The comparison content on this page is written for pool owners anywhere; the installation offer is local.
Is the MasterTemp 400HD right for your pool?
We install and service pool heating in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida. If you are outside that area, the comparison above is still yours to use — ask your local contractor the same questions.
