Pentair MasterTemp 400 vs Hayward H400FDN

Pentair MasterTemp 400, Hayward H400FDN and the cupro-nickel MasterTemp 400HD compared on efficiency, heat exchanger, warranty, flow and automation.

Updated September 17, 2026 · Affordable Solar & Pool Heating, LLC · Owner/operator Henry Manna

These are the two 400,000 BTU gas heaters we see most often on Gulf Coast equipment pads, and on the numbers that decide running cost they are level: 400,000 BTU/hr input for the MasterTemp, 399,900 for the H400FDN, and 84% thermal efficiency each.

The real split is the heat exchanger and the warranty. Hayward fits cupro-nickel as standard and publishes 3 years parts with 1 year field labor, or 3 years labor through a Hayward Rewards dealer. The standard MasterTemp 400 is copper with 2 years parts and labor, dropping to 1 year parts only if you buy it online. Pentair's cupro-nickel answer is the third column, the 400HD, which costs two points of efficiency and is natural gas only.

Buy the Hayward for corrosion resistance at 84%, the MasterTemp for IntelliCenter integration and the smaller cabinet, and the 400HD if you want both Pentair automation and a salt-tolerant exchanger.

Where they actually differ

Heat exchanger and salt pools

Hayward's cupro-nickel exchanger is standard on the H400FDN and on every other Universal H-Series model, at no efficiency penalty: the heater still publishes 84%. Hayward's product page describes excellent salt water and chemical corrosion resistance, and its brochure points out that the same material is usually a paid upgrade elsewhere.

The standard MasterTemp 400 uses copper. That is the category baseline rather than a weakness — copper conducts heat better than the alternatives, and on a screened chlorine pool with disciplined chemistry it lasts well. It is simply the least tolerant of the two conditions a Florida pool creates: a salt cell making chlorine in the plumbing and pH that drifts low.

Pentair's response is the MasterTemp 400HD in the third column, P/N 460805, which swaps copper for cupro-nickel and which Pentair positions for low pH, high flow and heavy use. The honest price is efficiency: 82% instead of 84%, and Pentair's own heat-up chart puts the HD about seven minutes behind the copper 400 on a 20,000-gallon pool.

No exchanger material replaces water chemistry. Both manufacturers exclude damage from unbalanced water, and both want the salt cell or chemical feeder downstream of the heater with a check valve between them. Pentair's manual is blunt that chlorine tablets in the skimmer will damage the exchanger whatever it is made of.

Efficiency and operating cost

The MasterTemp 400 and the H400FDN both publish 84% thermal efficiency, so at the same gas price they cost effectively the same per degree. Pentair states its figure is tested per ANSI Z21.56:19/CSA 4.7:19 section 5.10; Hayward's 84% is the top of its own published table for the Universal H-Series. The 400HD gives up two points at 82%, which is the price of the exchanger upgrade.

Both are rated by input, which makes the comparison honest. Pentair's manual says model size is BTU input in thousands of BTU/hr, and Hayward's 399,900 BTU/hr is likewise an input figure marketed as 400,000. Where you have to be careful is a heater advertised by output — that number will look smaller for the same appliance.

Published heat-up estimates are lab figures, but they show the class of work these heaters do. Pentair estimates 4 hours 58 minutes to raise a 20,000-gallon pool by 10°F and 27 minutes to raise a 600-gallon spa by 30°F, with the HD at 5 hours 5 minutes and 28 minutes. Hayward runs the same spa test at several sizes: 18 minutes on a 400-gallon spa and 27 minutes on a 600-gallon spa, which is the figure Pentair publishes for the MasterTemp 400. Read at the same spa size, these two heaters are level.

Warranty and where you buy

Hayward publishes 3 years parts and 1 year field labor under its 2026 Expert Line residential terms, extended to 3 years field labor when the heater is sold by a Hayward Rewards dealer. There is no separate longer heat-exchanger term — the cupro-nickel exchanger is covered as original equipment under the parts warranty, and a replacement exchanger bought later carries 1 year parts with no labor.

Pentair publishes 2 years parts and labor on MasterTemp, including the HD, but only when the heater is bought from a brick-and-mortar retailer, pool builder or pool service company and installed by a qualified professional who charges a fee. From an internet retailer it is 1 year parts, no labor. Pentair also publishes a bundle: a qualifying pump, filter and heater installed together all go to 3 years, which is worth asking about if you are replacing the pad rather than just the heater.

Hayward has the same trap in a different shape. The W3-prefixed version of this heater is an Open Line SKU approved for online sale and carries 1 year parts only with no labor. A W3H400FDN and an H400FDN are the same hardware with very different coverage, so the prefix on the quote is worth more than the discount.

Registration is required on the Pentair side, and both manufacturers make the terms conditional on professional installation. Neither brand's published warranty survives a marketplace purchase intact.

Our own scores need a word here too, because the table reads harder on Pentair than this section does: 4.6 out of 5 for the H400FDN against 4.2 for the MasterTemp 400 and 4.3 for the 400HD. Warranty and support is the largest single weight in our formula at 25%, and Hayward's 3 years of parts scores 4.5 there against Pentair's 3.5 — a quarter of a point before anything else is counted. The standard 400 gives up two more tenths on exchanger material, 3.5 for copper against 4.5 for cupro-nickel, which the 400HD earns back. Pentair takes a tenth in the other direction on controls, where IntelliCenter integration scores a full 5.0 against Hayward's 4.0, and all three tie at 5.0 on serviceability and parts. Read the number as coverage and corrosion risk rather than build quality.

Controls and automation

This is where the MasterTemp earns its place. Both Pentair models have an RS-485 COM port that connects directly to an IntelliCenter Control System — up to 16 heaters, addresses 1 to 16 — at which point the heater's own buttons go inactive and its alarms appear on the automation home screen. IntelliTouch, EasyTouch, IntelliConnect or a time clock use the 2-wire fireman's switch terminals instead.

The onboard LCD is the other half of it: the last five faults, total runtime, on/off cycles, stack flue temperature and flame sensor status, all readable before anyone opens a panel. On a service call that is the difference between diagnosing and guessing.

The H400FDN has a capable control pad with separate pool and spa setpoints, two-wire and three-wire remote terminals and junction boxes on both sides of the cabinet, and Hayward states it can be run from the Omni app when connected to a Hayward Omni control system. App control therefore means owning an Omni panel, or specifying the OmniX version of the heater, which Hayward sells under HS-prefixed SKUs such as HS400FDN — same cabinet, same cupro-nickel exchanger, embedded smart control.

Installation footprint, venting and gas supply

The MasterTemp is noticeably smaller: 23.02 inches wide by 21.0 deep by 28.15 high and 136 pounds carton weight, against a 34 inch wide Hayward cabinet. On the narrow side yards that are normal in Sarasota — pad boxed in by a fence on one side and an air handler on the other — that difference sometimes decides the job on its own.

Flow goes the other way. The MasterTemp 400 and 400HD want 40 GPM minimum with a 120 GPM maximum, while the H400FDN runs from 30 GPM with a 125 GPM system maximum. On a variable-speed pump, a heater that is satisfied at 30 GPM can hold a lower and cheaper heating speed, and low flow is the most common cause of a heater that lights and then drops out.

Gas supply is the line item that breaks quotes. Pentair's own table allows 1 inch pipe only to 20 equivalent feet on natural gas, 1-1/4 inch to 100 feet and 1-1/2 inch to 200 feet, adding 3 feet per elbow, and requires a sediment trap and manual shut-off outside the cabinet. Hayward takes a 3/4 inch NPT connection and specifies 4.5 inches w.c. minimum and 10.5 inches w.c. maximum inlet pressure on natural gas. Either way, the existing line back to the meter is what decides the price of a swap.

Clearances and service access differ in kind rather than degree. Pentair asks for 6 inches from combustible surfaces on the top, exhaust side, header side and door panels, 3 feet between the vent and a roof overhang, and 36 inches from an air conditioner or heat pump. Hayward specifies 6 inches at the rear and 12 inches at the sides, with front-panel-only service access so a technician does not have to pull the unit off the wall.

Florida-specific notes

Fuel availability comes first. Large parts of Sarasota and Manatee County have no natural gas at the street. The propane versions are Hayward's H400FDP and Pentair's P/N 460737 — but not the HD, because Pentair publishes no propane part number for any HD variant. If you are on propane and you want a cupro-nickel exchanger, Hayward's line answers that and Pentair's does not.

Pentair calls for its Bolt Down Bracket Kit (P/N 460738) and states that anchor clamps are required in Florida. That is a real cost and a real code item, not an accessory, and it should appear on the quote.

Both manufacturers put a floor under cold-weather use. Pentair warns that running a MasterTemp continuously below 68°F water causes condensation damage and voids the warranty; Hayward publishes a 40°F minimum operating temperature. Neither of these heaters is freeze protection for an empty house in January.

And on a coastal lot, the exchanger question is the whole comparison. If the pool runs salt, sits near the water, or belongs to someone who does not test it weekly, choose between the H400FDN and the 400HD and let the automation on the pad break the tie.

Which one for which job

The same six questions we would ask on a site visit, answered for these products.

If you need

Fast spa heating

Our pick

Either — both publish 27 minutes for a 600-gallon spa at a 30°F rise

Why

Pentair publishes 27 minutes to raise a 600-gallon spa by 30°F for the MasterTemp 400, and Hayward's brochure gives the H400FDN the same 27 minutes on the same spa (18 minutes at 400 gallons), with the 400HD a minute behind at 28. Decide this row on the exchanger, the warranty channel or the cabinet.

If you need

Everyday Florida pool heating

Our pick

Hayward H400FDN

Why

It runs from 30 GPM against the MasterTemp's 40 GPM, so a variable-speed pump can hold a lower heating speed day after day — though for genuinely everyday heating on the Gulf Coast an electric heat pump costs far less to run than any gas heater.

If you need

Heat and cool

Our pick

Neither — no gas heater cools water

Why

All three products here are heat only; taking water down in late summer needs a reverse-cycle heat pump such as the 135,000 BTU GulfStream HE150-TA, compared on our pool heat pump comparison hub.

If you need

Premium efficiency

Our pick

Neither — the Pentair ETi 400 is the efficiency play

Why

The two copper-and-cupro-nickel 400s here publish 84% and the 400HD 82%; Pentair's ETi 400 publishes 96% thermal efficiency with a direct-fire titanium exchanger and 3 years parts and labor.

If you need

Corrosion-resistant exchanger

Our pick

Hayward H400FDN

Why

It gives you cupro-nickel at the full 84% efficiency and in a propane version, where Pentair's cupro-nickel MasterTemp 400HD costs two points of efficiency at 82% and is published only for natural gas.

If you need

Automation ecosystem

Our pick

Pentair MasterTemp 400 NG or 400HD

Why

Both carry the RS-485 COM port that makes the heater a networked device on an IntelliCenter system with its alarms on the home screen, where the H400FDN needs a Hayward Omni system or an OmniX HS SKU for app control.

Common questions

Are the MasterTemp 400 and the H400FDN really the same size heater?

In capacity, yes. Pentair rates the MasterTemp 400 at 400,000 BTU/hr of gas input and Hayward rates the H400FDN at 399,900 BTU/hr, marketed as 400,000. Both figures are input, both heaters publish 84% thermal efficiency, and the 900 BTU/hr between them is noise. The cabinets are not the same size: the Pentair is 23.02 inches wide and the Hayward 34 inches.

Should I buy the MasterTemp 400HD instead of the standard 400?

On a salt pool, a coastal lot or a pool whose chemistry is not watched closely, usually yes. The HD swaps copper for cupro-nickel, which Pentair positions for low pH, high flow and heavy use, and the cost is two points of efficiency and about seven minutes on Pentair's published heat-up chart. On a well-managed chlorine pool inland, the standard 400 at 84% is the better buy.

Which one costs less to run?

Essentially the same. Running cost on a gas heater is thermal efficiency times fuel price, and the MasterTemp 400 and H400FDN both publish 84%. The 400HD's 82% is a small, steady premium for the exchanger. What actually moves the bill is the fuel: natural gas is meaningfully cheaper per degree than propane in this market.

Can I get a cupro-nickel Pentair heater on propane?

No. Pentair's model table publishes a natural gas part number for every HD variant and no propane part number for any of them. On propane your cupro-nickel option in this comparison is Hayward's H400FDP, the propane version of the H400FDN, which keeps the standard cupro-nickel exchanger and the 84% rating.

Which heater is easier to get serviced in Florida?

Both are well supported, which is not true of everything sold online. The MasterTemp is the gas heater our technicians open most often, its parts are stocked regionally and its LCD keeps a five-error history. Hayward's advantage is physical: front-panel-only service access and universal 2 inch by 2-1/2 inch CPVC unions, so a repair or a future swap does not mean pulling the unit off a wall or re-plumbing the pad.

Can you install either one in Sarasota?

Yes. We install and service both throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida, and since we fit both brands we have no reason to steer you toward one. This comparison is written for pool owners anywhere; the installation offer is local.

Still not sure? We will tell you which one we would fit.

We install both sides of most of these comparisons, which means we have no reason to steer you. Send us the pool details and we will give you a straight answer — and a quote if you are on Florida's Gulf Coast.
