Hayward vs Pentair Gas Pool Heaters: Universal H-Series vs MasterTemp

Hayward Universal H-Series and Pentair MasterTemp compared at 250,000 and 400,000 BTU on heat exchanger, efficiency, warranty channel, automation and price.

Updated September 17, 2026 · Affordable Solar & Pool Heating, LLC · Owner/operator Henry Manna

At the two sizes most Florida pools buy, these lines are closer than the badges suggest. Hayward's Universal H-Series and Pentair's MasterTemp both publish 84% thermal efficiency at 250,000 and 400,000 BTU/hr, and both are stocked and serviced across this coast.

Two verified differences do the deciding. Hayward fits a cupro-nickel heat exchanger to every Universal H-Series model and covers the heater for 3 years parts with 1 year field labor, or 3 years labor bought through a Hayward Rewards dealer. Pentair ships copper on a standard MasterTemp, publishes 2 years parts and labor, and drops that to 1 year parts only on an internet purchase — but its RS-485 port makes the heater a genuine device on an IntelliCenter system.

Salt pool, coastal lot or a 3-year parts term: Hayward. Pentair automation already on the pad: MasterTemp, with the cupro-nickel HD as the salt-water answer.

Where they actually differ

Heat exchanger and salt pools

This is the clearest difference between the two lines and the one that decides how long a gas heater lasts on the Gulf Coast. Hayward fits cupro-nickel to every Universal H-Series model as standard, including both heaters in this table, and its own brochure makes the point that the material is normally a paid upgrade elsewhere. Pentair's standard MasterTemp 400 and 250 use copper.

Copper is not a defect — it conducts heat better than anything else in this category, and on a screened chlorine pool with steady chemistry it does the job for years. It is simply less tolerant of the two things a Florida pool throws at it: a salt cell manufacturing chlorine in the plumbing, and pH that drifts low for a few weeks in August.

Pentair's answer is the MasterTemp HD, which swaps copper for cupro-nickel and which Pentair positions for low pH, high flow and heavy use. It costs two points of efficiency (82% rather than 84%) and it is natural gas only — Pentair publishes no propane part number for any HD variant. Hayward's cupro-nickel comes with no efficiency penalty and is available in propane as the H400FDP and H250FDP.

Whichever you choose, plumbing order beats metallurgy. The salt cell or chlorinator has to sit downstream of the heater with a check valve between them, and both manufacturers exclude exchanger damage caused by unbalanced water.

Efficiency and operating cost

There is nothing to choose here. Both the H400FDN and the MasterTemp 400 publish 84% thermal efficiency, and so do the H250FDN and the MasterTemp 250. Pentair states its figure is tested per ANSI Z21.56:19/CSA 4.7:19 section 5.10; Hayward's 84% is the top figure in its own published table for the Universal H-Series. At the same fuel price, the two heaters cost effectively the same per degree.

What does move the bill is fuel and capacity rating. Pentair rates MasterTemp by gas input — its manual says plainly that model size is BTU input in thousands of BTU/hr — and Hayward's H400FDN is 399,900 BTU/hr of input marketed as 400,000. Both are input figures, so the comparison is like for like, but a heater advertised by output is not.

If efficiency is genuinely the deciding factor, neither of these is the product to buy. Pentair's own ETi 400 publishes 96% thermal efficiency with a direct-fire titanium exchanger and 3 years parts and labor, at a premium price tier and with 2 to 4 gallons of condensate an hour to route. That is the efficiency play in this category; the two lines compared here are the conventional workhorses.

Warranty and where you buy it

On paper Hayward publishes 3 years of parts against Pentair's 2, Pentair publishes 2 years of labor against Hayward's standard 1, and both terms are conditional on the sales channel in a way that catches homeowners out.

Hayward's 2026 Expert Line residential terms give 3 years parts and 1 year field labor, extended to 3 years field labor when the heater is sold by a Hayward Rewards dealer. There is no separate longer heat-exchanger term: the cupro-nickel exchanger is covered as original equipment under the parts warranty. The trap is the prefix — a W3-prefixed version of the same heater is an Open Line SKU approved for online sale and carries 1 year parts only, with no labor at all.

Pentair publishes 2 years parts and labor on MasterTemp, but only when the heater is bought from a brick-and-mortar retailer, pool builder or pool service company and installed by a qualified professional who charges a fee. Bought from an internet retailer, the same heater is covered for 1 year parts with no labor. Pentair also publishes a bundle: a qualifying pump, filter and heater installed together go to 3 years. Registration is required either way.

Read that as one rule rather than two brands. On either line, the cheap online price and the published warranty are not available at the same time, and for gas equipment the labor term is the half that costs real money.

One word about our own scores, because the table shows a gap the copy does not. Both Hayward heaters come out at 4.6 out of 5, against 4.2 for the MasterTemp 400 NG and 4.1 for the 250 NG. Warranty and support carries the largest single weight in our formula at 25%, and Hayward's 3 years of parts scores 4.5 there against Pentair's 3.5 — a quarter of a point of the difference on its own. Most of the rest is exchanger material: 4.5 for cupro-nickel fitted as standard against 3.5 for copper. Pentair takes a tenth of a point back on controls, where IntelliCenter integration scores a full 5.0 against Hayward's 4.0, and all four heaters tie at 5.0 on serviceability and parts. The score measures published coverage and field record, not how well either heater is built.

Controls and automation

Pentair has the stronger hand here and it is not close. Every MasterTemp in this table has an RS-485 COM port that wires straight into an IntelliCenter Control System, where the heater's own buttons go inactive and its alarms appear on the automation home screen. IntelliTouch, EasyTouch, IntelliConnect or a plain time clock use the 2-wire fireman's switch terminals instead. The onboard LCD also keeps the last five faults, total runtime, cycle count, stack flue temperature and flame status, which turns a diagnostic visit into a repair visit.

Hayward's H-prefixed heaters have a capable onboard pad with separate pool and spa setpoints and two-wire and three-wire remote terminals, and Hayward states the heater is controllable from the Omni app when connected to a Hayward Omni control system. In other words, app control on this SKU means owning an Omni panel. Hayward's answer for control built into the heater itself is the OmniX generation, sold under HS-prefixed SKUs such as the HS400FDN — the same cabinet and the same cupro-nickel exchanger, a different control platform.

The practical rule on a Florida pad: match the heater to the automation you already own, or to the automation you intend to own. Mixing brands usually works for on-off control and rarely delivers full integration.

Installation footprint, venting and gas supply

The MasterTemp is the smaller box. Pentair lists it at 23.02 inches wide by 21.0 inches deep by 28.15 inches high at 136 pounds carton weight for the 400, against a Hayward H400FDN cabinet that is 34 inches wide. At the 250,000 BTU size the gap narrows — the H250FDN is 25 inches wide. We leave a weight out of that comparison on purpose: Hayward's product page lists the H250FDN at 165 pounds and Hayward's own Universal H-Series brochure lists 134, and neither document says which figure is packaged and which is the bare heater. On the narrow side yards common in Sarasota, nine inches of cabinet width is sometimes the whole decision.

Flow is the other install-day difference. The MasterTemp 400 wants 40 GPM minimum and the H400FDN 30 GPM; at the smaller size both want 25 GPM. On a variable-speed pump the heating speed has to be programmed high enough to satisfy the water pressure switch, and a heater that is happy at 30 GPM can run at a lower, quieter, cheaper speed than one that needs 40.

Gas supply is where quotes go wrong on either brand. Pentair publishes a pipe-sizing table that allows 1 inch pipe only to 20 equivalent feet on natural gas for the 400, 1-1/4 inch to 100 feet and 1-1/2 inch to 200 feet, adding 3 feet of equivalent length per elbow; the 250 relaxes that to 3/4 inch at 20 feet and 1 inch to 70 feet. Hayward takes a 3/4 inch NPT connection and wants 4.5 to 10.5 inches w.c. at the inlet. Either way, an existing line that fed a smaller heater is the most common reason a swap costs more than the estimate.

Service access differs too. Hayward designs the Universal H-Series for front-panel-only service, which matters when the pad is boxed in by a fence and an air handler. Pentair asks for 6 inches from combustible surfaces on the top, exhaust side, header side and door panels, and 36 inches from an air conditioner or heat pump.

Florida-specific notes

Natural gas is the first question, not the last. Large parts of Sarasota and Manatee County have no gas main at the street, which puts you on propane — the Hayward H400FDP or H250FDP, or Pentair's propane MasterTemp part numbers — plus a tank, a delivery contract and a higher cost per degree. It also rules out the Pentair HD models entirely, since none of them are published in a propane version.

Anchoring is a real line item here. Pentair's own documentation calls for the Bolt Down Bracket Kit (P/N 460738) and states that anchor clamps are required in Florida. Budget for it and for the pad work that goes with it rather than discovering it on installation day.

Pentair also warns against running a MasterTemp continuously with water below 68°F, because the condensation that causes damages the heater and voids the warranty; Hayward publishes a 40°F minimum operating temperature for the Universal H-Series. Neither is a freeze-protection appliance — that is a heat pump's or a cover's job.

Finally, a gas heater is the wrong tool for holding a Gulf Coast pool at temperature all winter. Both of these lines are built for heat on demand: a cold front, a weekend of guests, a spa you want hot in half an hour. If the pool is used most weeks, price an electric heat pump against the gas bill before you choose either one.

Which one for which job

The same six questions we would ask on a site visit, answered for these products.

If you need

Fast spa heating

Our pick

Either — both publish 27 minutes for a 600-gallon spa at a 30°F rise

Why

Read at the same spa size the two tables agree: Hayward's brochure gives the H400FDN 27 minutes to raise a 600-gallon spa by 30°F, 18 minutes on a 400-gallon spa, and Pentair publishes 27 minutes for the MasterTemp 400. Break this row on the exchanger, the warranty channel or the cabinet instead.

If you need

Everyday Florida pool heating

Our pick

Hayward H250FDN

Why

It carries the same 84% efficiency and cupro-nickel exchanger as the 400 at the mid price tier and needs only 25 GPM, but for holding a pool at temperature week after week an electric heat pump still costs far less to run.

If you need

Heat and cool

Our pick

Neither — no gas heater cools water

Why

All four products here are heat only; cooling needs a reverse-cycle heat pump such as the 135,000 BTU GulfStream HE150-TA, which you can compare on our pool heat pump comparison hub.

If you need

Premium efficiency

Our pick

Neither — the Pentair ETi 400 is the efficiency play

Why

All four heaters in this table publish 84% thermal efficiency, so there is no winner among them; Pentair's ETi 400 publishes 96% with a direct-fire titanium exchanger and 3 years parts and labor.

If you need

Corrosion-resistant exchanger

Our pick

Hayward H400FDN or H250FDN

Why

Cupro-nickel is standard on every Universal H-Series model at 84% efficiency and is offered in propane, where Pentair's cupro-nickel means stepping up to an HD model at 82% and natural gas only.

If you need

Automation ecosystem

Our pick

Pentair MasterTemp 400 NG or 250 NG

Why

The RS-485 COM port connects directly to an IntelliCenter Control System — up to 16 heaters, addressed 1 to 16 — with the heater's alarms on the automation home screen, where the Hayward needs an Omni system or an OmniX HS SKU for app control.

Common questions

Is Hayward or Pentair the better gas pool heater?

Neither line is better across the board, which is why we install both. Hayward gives you a cupro-nickel heat exchanger as standard and 3 years of parts against Pentair's 2; Pentair gives you the deeper automation integration and 2 years of labor coverage in a smaller cabinet. At 250,000 and 400,000 BTU both publish 84% thermal efficiency, so the choice is about corrosion resistance, warranty channel and what else is on your equipment pad.

Does the Pentair MasterTemp come with a cupro-nickel heat exchanger?

Not on the standard models. The MasterTemp 400 and 250 use copper. Pentair's cupro-nickel version is the HD — the 400HD (P/N 460805) and 250HD (P/N 460806) — which trades two points of efficiency for the material and is published only in natural gas. Hayward includes cupro-nickel on every Universal H-Series model at 84% efficiency, with no HD variant to specify.

Which one has the better warranty?

It depends which half you value. Hayward publishes 3 years parts and 1 year field labor, extended to 3 years labor through a Hayward Rewards dealer. Pentair publishes 2 years parts and labor. Both are conditional: Hayward's W3-prefixed Open Line SKUs sold online carry 1 year parts only, and a MasterTemp bought from an internet retailer drops to 1 year parts with no labor. Get the channel confirmed in writing before you compare prices.

Can I put a Hayward heater on a Pentair pad, or the other way round?

Yes for heating; it is automation and service that get complicated. A gas heater can be switched by almost any automation system through a two-wire dry contact, which is on-off control. Full integration — setpoints, faults and diagnostics on the automation screen — is a same-brand story, and the MasterTemp's RS-485 link to IntelliCenter is the strongest example of it in the gas category.

Do these heaters work on a salt water pool?

Both can, with the right exchanger and the right plumbing order. On salt we would specify cupro-nickel — which means any Universal H-Series model, or a Pentair MasterTemp HD — and the salt cell has to be plumbed downstream of the heater with a check valve between them. No exchanger material survives water that is left acidic, and both manufacturers exclude that damage.

Do you install Hayward and Pentair gas heaters in Sarasota?

Yes. We install and service both brands throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida, and because we fit both we have no reason to steer you. This comparison is written for pool owners anywhere; the installation offer is local.

Still not sure? We will tell you which one we would fit.

We install both sides of most of these comparisons, which means we have no reason to steer you. Send us the pool details and we will give you a straight answer — and a quote if you are on Florida's Gulf Coast.
