Why homeowners consider it
- Jandy rates it at 160,000 BTU/hr at the 80/80/80 test point, 148,000 at 80/63/80 and 101,000 at the AHRI low test point of 50°F air. The JRT3000R below it is rated 130,000, 124,000 and 82,000 at the same three points, so the extra capacity is there on a cold morning as well as on the rating plate.
- Efficiency does not fall with the size. Jandy publishes COP 5.9 at 80/80/80, 5.7 at 80/63/80 and 4.4 at the low test point, each a little above the JRT3000R's 5.8, 5.6 and 4.0.
- It heats and chills, like every JRT model, and Jandy states it can chill a small body of water — around 800 gallons or less — down to 40°F for cold-plunge use. For that the manual requires the unit to be switched from its factory hot gas defrost setting to air defrost.
- The heat exchanger is a titanium twisted coil and the cabinet is ABS, so there is no copper in the water path and no steel shell to rust. Jandy's manual allows salt pools up to 4,500 ppm, with the chlorinator on the outlet side of the heat pump.
- It is single phase. 160,000 BTU/hr on a 208-230 volt single-phase supply, in the same 32-inch by 32-inch footprint as the JRT3000R, means a large pool that would otherwise be quoted two smaller heat pumps may be served by one.
- It joins a Jandy AquaLink system over RS-485, and Jandy states that an AquaLink RS control with that connection controls both the heating and the cooling function. Jandy's brochure describes SoundShield for the whole line — a swept-wing fan blade design and a decibel-dampening acoustic blanket.
What to know before buying
- Read the electrical table, not the headline. Jandy's brochure says the 160K BTU unit runs on a 50 amp breaker. The specification table in the same brochure and in the installation manual gives a minimum circuit ampacity of 50 A at 230 VAC and 55 A at 208 VAC, maximum over-current protection of 70 A, and 42 running load amps — and the manual states the breaker must not be smaller than the minimum circuit ampacity. So the 50 amp figure holds on a 230-volt supply and not on a 208-volt one. Have the electrician size the circuit from the rating plate.
- The warranty is short for the category. Jandy publishes two years on heat pumps, with five years on the compressor and heat exchanger, and no labor coverage. GulfStream publishes seven years parts and two years labor, and Raypak publishes seven years parts, two years labor and ten years on the titanium tube.
- The refrigerant is R-454B, which is classed A2L — mildly flammable. Jandy's manual carries a fire-risk warning and a full section of flammable-refrigerant service procedures, and states that installation, maintenance and service must only be performed by personnel trained on appliances with flammable refrigerants. The smaller JRT models' manual specifies R-410A, so confirm that whoever will service this one is trained for A2L work.
- It weighs 347 lbs, against 252 lbs for the JRT3000R, and stands 45 inches high on a 32-inch by 32-inch base. Plan how it gets to the pad, and in Florida it has to be anchored with the supplied clamps.
- Flow has to land between 30 and 80 GPM, with 64 GPM stated as optimal. The specification table allows 80 GPM, but the plumbing section of the same manual still calls for an external bypass when flow exceeds 70 GPM, so ask the installer which figure they are working to.
- It needs air. Jandy specifies 24 inches of clearance at the front, 12 inches at the rear and each side, and 60 inches above, and indoor installation is not recommended. Air flow is 4,900 CFM, against 3,600 on the JRT3000R.
- Jandy publishes no minimum operating ambient temperature for this model either. Treat the 50°F test point as the coldest figure Jandy actually publishes.
- Chilling has limits on automation. Jandy's manual states that heating and chilling can only be switched remotely in pool mode, that spa mode controls heating only, and that a two-wire remote controls one function, heating or cooling, not both.
- Jandy's warranty excludes product bought through the internet or e-commerce platforms and requires a licensed, qualified installer.
Warranty, term by term
The warranty only matters on the parts that actually fail. Here is how this one splits up.
- Parts
- 2 years
- Compressor
- 5 years
- Heat exchanger
- 5 years
Jandy's published limited warranty gives heat pumps two years, with heat pump compressors and heat exchangers at five years. There is no labor coverage — the document states Fluidra's liability does not include costs for labor to service or repair the product — and refrigerant and other expendables are not warranted. The warranty does not apply to Jandy products purchased through the internet or other e-commerce platforms, applies only to units installed and serviced by a licensed, qualified pool professional, and drops to one year in any application other than a single-family dwelling. Professional installation / authorized-channel requirements may apply.
Why the heat exchanger matters
The heat exchanger is the part of a pool heater that actually moves heat into the water, and what it is made of decides how long the heater survives Florida water chemistry. Here is what the four materials mean in practice.
- Copper
- The traditional material and the cheapest to build. It transfers heat well and is fine on a well-balanced chlorine pool, but it is the least forgiving of low pH, high chlorine and salt. On the Gulf Coast it is usually the first component to fail.
- Cupro-nickel
- Copper alloyed with nickel. It gives up a little heat transfer in exchange for much better resistance to unbalanced water chemistry and salt. On gas heaters this is the upgrade worth having in Florida, and some manufacturers now ship it as standard.
- NiTek (nickel alloy)
- A nickel-alloy exchanger used on some gas heaters as a corrosion-resistant alternative to copper. Positioned between cupro-nickel and titanium in both durability and price.
- TitaniumThis heater
- Effectively immune to pool water chemistry, including salt. It is the standard on quality pool heat pumps and the reason a heat pump can sit on a salt pool for years without exchanger trouble. It is expensive, which is why you rarely see it on gas heaters.
Whatever the material, plumbing order matters just as much: a chlorinator or salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream.
How we scored it
- Warranty is scored exactly as on the JRT3000R, because it is the same document: two years on the unit and five on the compressor and heat exchanger, with no labor coverage. That is behind GulfStream's seven-and-two and Raypak's seven-and-two-plus-ten on the titanium tube, and we weight warranty at 25%.
- Durability takes a full 5 for the same reason as the rest of the line: a titanium twisted-coil exchanger in an ABS cabinet, with no copper in the water and no steel shell to rust.
- Performance scores 4.5, half a point above the JRT3000R. COP 5.9 at 80/80/80 is above the 130,000 BTU/hr model's 5.8, COP 4.4 at the AHRI low test point is above the 4.0 published for the JRT3000R, the Hayward HeatPro HP31405T and the Pentair UltraTemp 140 H/C, and 101,000 BTU/hr at 50°F air is useful output on a cold Florida morning. The smaller JRT2000R and JRT2500R still publish higher COPs, 6.4 and 6.5, at 80/80/80.
- Serviceability scores 3.5, half a point below the JRT3000R. Jandy's distribution in Florida is strong and the control reports faults in plain language, but this is a 347 lb unit on R-454B, an A2L refrigerant that Jandy's manual says needs technicians trained in flammable-refrigerant procedures. It is also a new model with its own manual and parts list, so there is less field history behind it than behind the 130,000 BTU/hr unit.
- Controls score 4, as on the JRT3000R. The RS-485 link into AquaLink is a real one and can switch heat and chill remotely in pool mode, but there is no Wi-Fi or app in the heat pump itself — the iAquaLink experience depends on owning the automation system.
- Value holds at 3. It sits in the same premium tier as the JRT3000R with the same short warranty. Where one unit takes the place of two smaller heat pumps on a large pool, that is a real saving; against that, budget for the larger circuit.

JRT4001R questions
Does the JRT4001R really run on a 50 amp breaker?
On a 230-volt supply, by Jandy's figures, yes. Jandy's brochure says the 160K BTU unit runs on a 50 amp breaker, and the installation manual gives a minimum circuit ampacity of 50 A at 230 VAC. The same table gives 55 A at 208 VAC and a maximum over-current protection of 70 A, and states the breaker must not be smaller than the minimum circuit ampacity — so on a 208-volt supply a 50 amp breaker is below the published minimum. The circuit should be sized by a licensed electrician from the unit's rating plate.
How is it different from the JRT3000R?
More capacity on a bigger circuit. The JRT4001R is rated 160,000 BTU/hr at COP 5.9 against 130,000 at COP 5.8, and 101,000 BTU/hr against 82,000 at the 50°F low test point. It weighs 347 lbs against 252, moves 4,900 CFM of air against 3,600, accepts up to 80 GPM against 70, needs a 50 A minimum circuit at 230 VAC against 40 A, and uses R-454B refrigerant. The footprint, the titanium exchanger, the ABS cabinet, the controls and the warranty are the same.
Can it chill a cold plunge?
Jandy says so, within limits. The manual states the JRT heat pump can chill the water to 40°F on a small body of water of around 800 gallons or less, and that for cold-plunge use the unit must be switched from hot gas defrost, the factory setting, to air defrost. That figure is for a plunge pool, not a full-size swimming pool.
Will it work on a salt water pool?
Yes. The exchanger is titanium and the cabinet is ABS. Jandy's manual allows salt content up to 4,500 ppm, and requires any sanitizing device to be installed on the outlet side of the heat pump with a check valve between the two — the salt cell goes downstream, never upstream.
Can I run it from my phone?
Through a Jandy AquaLink system, yes. The heat pump connects to an AquaLink RS power center over a four-wire RS-485 link, and Jandy's brochure describes on-the-go operation through the iAquaLink app. The manual notes that chill mode can be controlled from iAquaLink in pool mode only, not in spa mode. There is no Wi-Fi in the heat pump itself.
Are the smaller VersaTemp models still available?
Yes. Jandy's 2026 brochure still lists JRT2000R, JRT2500R, JRT3000R and the three-phase JRT3000R3 beside the JRT4001R, and the Fluidra 2026 catalog addendum lists JRT2000R, JRT2500R, JRT3000R and JRT4001R as current part numbers.
Do you install Jandy heat pumps in Sarasota?
Yes. We install and service pool heat pumps, including Jandy units, throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida. The comparison content here is written for pool owners anywhere; the installation offer is local.
Is the JRT4001R right for your pool?
We install and service pool heating in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida. If you are outside that area, the comparison above is still yours to use — ask your local contractor the same questions.
