Why homeowners consider it
- Factory-installed VersaFlo is the only route to a five-year heat-exchanger warranty from Jandy: the limited warranty gives five years on heat exchangers in JXi gas heaters with factory-installed VersaFlo, against one year on a standard JXi. Buy it deliberately, though — Jandy's 2024 catalog addendum lists factory VersaFlo only against JXiQ part numbers, so the cheapest heater you can order today with the bypass already in it is the JXiQ400NK, and the JXIVFKIT kit is the way to add the same bypass to a JXi you already have.
- The hydraulics are the real benefit. When the heater is not firing, a flow gate routes most of the water past the heat exchanger and straight back to the pool, and Jandy's own head-loss chart shows the pressure drop through the heater dropping sharply — which lets a variable-speed pump run slower and cheaper for the eleven months a Florida heater is off.
- Less water through the exchanger when it is not being heated also means less time exposed to pool chemistry, which is a plausible part of why Jandy is willing to warrant it for five years rather than one.
- The bypass is automatic, not a valve someone has to remember. It sits in the heat position while the heater fires, holds there for about a minute after the heater shuts off, then moves to bypass.
- Underneath it is a standard JXi400: 399,000 BTU/hr, 84% thermal efficiency on Jandy's EnergyGuide label, the same 22-inch-wide cabinet and the same RS-485 connection into AquaLink.
What to know before buying
- Check what SKU you are actually being quoted. Jandy's model key defines the K suffix for both JXi and JXiQ, but the ordering tables in the 2024 catalog addendum carry no JXi…NK part number at all — every factory-VersaFlo part number listed there is a JXiQ (JXIQ200NK, JXIQ260NK, JXIQ400NK, plus the propane equivalents) — and distributors report shipping a JXiQ400NK against a JXi400NK order. JXI400NK is a real number in the retail channel, but before you sign, have the supplier confirm in writing which box is coming and that VersaFlo is factory-installed on it, because that is what the five-year exchanger term hangs on.
- The five-year term covers the heat exchanger only. The board, blower, gas valve, igniter, sensors and bypass actuator all fall under Jandy's standard one-year parts warranty, and there is no labor coverage on any of it.
- It has to be factory-installed to earn the warranty. Jandy also sells VersaFlo as a retrofit kit (JXIVFKIT) for JXi and JXiQ 200, 260 and 400 heaters, but the warranty language is specific about factory-installed units — do not assume adding the kit later extends the exchanger term.
- A retrofit on an older heater may need more than the kit. Jandy's VersaFlo manual states that heaters with a serial number revision of G or earlier also need the PIB kit (R0719500) and the flue sensor kit (R0719400) to complete the installation.
- The bypass helps pump energy, not heating energy. It does not make the heater burn less gas — it reduces head loss through the heater while it is off. If your heater is plumbed on its own valved loop already, the benefit is smaller.
- Gas and venting demands are identical to any JXi400: 20 feet of 1-inch natural gas pipe, 95 feet of 1-1/4 inch, an 8-inch Category I vent connection, 30 to 100 GPM of water flow.
- Jandy's warranty excludes e-commerce purchases and requires a licensed, qualified installer — which matters more here than usual, because the warranty is the reason to buy this version.
Warranty, term by term
The warranty only matters on the parts that actually fail. Here is how this one splits up.
- Parts
- 1 year
- Heat exchanger
- 5 years (VersaFlo factory-installed)
Jandy's published limited warranty covers JXi heaters for one year from retail purchase. There is no labor coverage at all: the document states Fluidra's liability does not include costs for labor to service or repair the product. The five-year term applies to the heat exchanger only, and only when VersaFlo is factory-installed. The warranty does not apply to Jandy products purchased through the internet or other e-commerce platforms, and it applies only to products installed and serviced by a licensed, qualified pool professional. Anything installed outside a single-family dwelling drops to one year. Professional installation / authorized-channel requirements may apply.
Why the heat exchanger matters
The heat exchanger is the part of a pool heater that actually moves heat into the water, and what it is made of decides how long the heater survives Florida water chemistry. Here is what the four materials mean in practice.
- CopperThis heater
- The traditional material and the cheapest to build. It transfers heat well and is fine on a well-balanced chlorine pool, but it is the least forgiving of low pH, high chlorine and salt. On the Gulf Coast it is usually the first component to fail.
- Cupro-nickel
- Copper alloyed with nickel. It gives up a little heat transfer in exchange for much better resistance to unbalanced water chemistry and salt. On gas heaters this is the upgrade worth having in Florida, and some manufacturers now ship it as standard.
- NiTek (nickel alloy)
- A nickel-alloy exchanger used on some gas heaters as a corrosion-resistant alternative to copper. Positioned between cupro-nickel and titanium in both durability and price.
- Titanium
- Effectively immune to pool water chemistry, including salt. It is the standard on quality pool heat pumps and the reason a heat pump can sit on a salt pool for years without exchanger trouble. It is expensive, which is why you rarely see it on gas heaters.
Whatever the material, plumbing order matters just as much: a chlorinator or salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream.
How we scored it
- Warranty scores 3 rather than 2.5 because factory VersaFlo turns a one-year heat exchanger into a five-year one. It is still one year, parts only, no labor on everything else, which is why it does not score higher.
- Durability gets 4: the exchanger is copper, but keeping pool water out of it whenever the heater is idle is a real reduction in exposure, and Jandy backs that judgment with its own warranty terms.
- Performance is unchanged from a standard JXi400 — 399,000 BTU/hr and 84% on Jandy's EnergyGuide label. The bypass saves pump energy, not fuel.
- Serviceability matches the standard JXi, with the same rotating top cover and swing-up raceway, plus one more moving part in the header to eventually service.
- Controls score the same as the JXi: a genuine RS-485 link into AquaLink, with the bypass actuator driven automatically by the heater's own call for heat.
- Value is the best of the Jandy gas records here. Five times the exchanger coverage and lower system head loss for a modest premium over a plain JXi400 is good buying — as long as a factory-VersaFlo JXi is what the supplier actually ships. If the channel puts you on a JXiQ400NK instead, read the value column on that record rather than this one.
- Why our 3.9 sits below the 4.6 starter score in the comparison guide: warranty and support is 25% of the formula and this record still scores only 3 there, because the five-year term reaches the heat exchanger and nothing else while labor is not covered at all. Durability is held to 4 by a copper exchanger and serviceability to 4 by the Rev G / Rev H parts split. Score the warranty column the way we score a Raypak AVIA — a 4, for three years parts and labor — and it comes out at 4.2. The score is a judgment about the risk you are carrying, not about how well the heater is built.

JXI400NK questions
Is VersaFlo a separate heater?
No. VersaFlo is an integrated bypass built into a JXi or JXiQ heater's header. It is not a heat pump and not a product line of its own. This page covers the JXi 400,000 BTU natural gas heater with VersaFlo factory-installed, which Jandy's model key writes as JXI400NK. One thing to know before you order: Jandy's 2024 catalog addendum lists factory-installed VersaFlo only against JXiQ part numbers (JXIQ200NK, JXIQ260NK, JXIQ400NK and the propane equivalents), and distributors report shipping a JXiQ400NK against a JXi400NK order — so confirm in writing which heater is being supplied and that VersaFlo is factory-fitted.
What does the bypass actually do?
VersaFlo is an integrated bypass in the heater header, not a separate product line. When the heater is not firing a flow gate moves to the bypass position so most of the water returns to the pool without passing through the heat exchanger, which cuts the head loss through the heater; when there is a call for heat the gate moves back and water goes through the exchanger. Jandy's own head-loss chart shows the difference, and the manual recommends pairing it with automation and a variable-speed pump so the pump can run slower while the heater is idle.
Does VersaFlo save gas?
No — it saves pump energy. The savings come from lower head loss through the heater while it is not firing, which lets a variable-speed pump turn slower for the same flow. Jandy's manual recommends pairing it with automation and a variable-speed pump for exactly that reason.
Can VersaFlo be added to a heater I already own?
Physically, yes: Jandy sells the JXIVFKIT integrated bypass kit for JXi and JXiQ 200, 260 and 400 heaters, and heaters with a serial revision of G or earlier also need the PIB kit and flue sensor kit. But the five-year heat-exchanger warranty is written for factory-installed VersaFlo, so do not buy the kit expecting to extend an existing warranty.
Is the warranty really five years?
On the heat exchanger, yes. Jandy's limited warranty document states that JXi heaters are warranted for one year and that heat exchangers on JXi gas heaters with factory-installed VersaFlo are warranted for five. Labor is not covered at all, and the warranty does not apply to units bought online.
