Why homeowners consider it
- At 138,000 BTU/hr it is the highest-output model in the HE Series — more than the flagship heat/cool HE150-TA, which is rated 135,000 BTU/hr, because it does not carry the reversing hardware.
- It gets that capacity without a bigger circuit: 37 minimum circuit amps on a 50 amp maximum breaker, the same electrical requirement as the 118,000 BTU HE125-RA and lower than the HE150-TA's 40 minimum circuit amps.
- Titanium heat exchanger and a UV-stabilized ABS cabinet are standard, which is the combination that survives salt pools, salt air and the barrier-island lots along our coast.
- 7 years parts and 2 years labor is published on the sell sheet, the product page and this SKU's page, and the sell sheet states there are no trip charges during the labor period.
- Bigger capacity on a Florida pool mostly buys recovery time: the manual's benchmark is an average rise of about 1°F per hour under ideal conditions, and that is the number that changes when a cold front drops the pool five degrees overnight.
What to know before buying
- It is heat only. If chilling matters to you, the HE150-TA is the reverse-cycle version — and the chiller components have to be ordered with the unit, so it is not a later upgrade. Pentair's SKU pages use the same line-level copy on every GulfStream model, including a mention of "heating and cooling functionality" on heat-only SKUs; the spec sheet and the product-page table list HE150-RA as heat only.
- Bigger is not automatically better. A heat pump holds a temperature rather than chasing one, and an oversized unit on a small pool cycles more and costs more up front without swimming any warmer.
- It needs the airflow its size implies: 12 inches of clearance each side, four feet above, outdoor only. The installation manual warns that enclosed spaces and low overhangs recirculate cold air, trigger defrost and may void the warranty on refrigerant components.
- Flow window is 30 to 70 GPM with 45-50 GPM optimal, through 2-inch unions. A variable-speed pump has to be programmed to hit that during the heating schedule or the unit will report no flow.
- Plumbing order is a warranty condition: pool pump, filter, heat pump, solar, then chlorinator or salt cell, then the pool.
- The weather floor still applies — defrost below 48°F ambient and no operation below 35°F — and the reverse-cycle defrost that extends operation into the mid-30s is listed as a heat/cool-model feature, so this heat-only unit does not have it.
- Automation is dry-contact only. No RS-485, no published app or Wi-Fi control.
Warranty, term by term
The warranty only matters on the parts that actually fail. Here is how this one splits up.
- Parts
- 7 years
- Labor
- 2 years
Pentair publishes 7 years parts and 2 years labor for GulfStream on the sell sheet, the GulfStream product page and this SKU's own page, and the sell sheet adds that there are no trip charges during the labor period. Pentair's cross-brand warranty table contradicts that: it lists "GulfStream Heat Pump" at 2 years and "GulfStream Heat Pump (Parts)" at 3 years. We could not reconcile the two, so get the current terms in writing before you buy. No separate heat-exchanger term is published — the titanium exchanger is covered under the parts warranty — and the manual states that warranty service must be handled by an authorized service center. Pentair lists GulfStream in the in-ground equipment section of its warranty page, and the channel rule stated there governs everything on it: the published term runs only when the equipment is bought from a brick-and-mortar retailer, pool builder or pool service company and installed by a qualified professional who charges a fee for their services, while a unit bought from an internet retailer receives a one-year parts-only warranty with no labor coverage at all. Professional installation / authorized-channel requirements may apply.
Why the heat exchanger matters
The heat exchanger is the part of a pool heater that actually moves heat into the water, and what it is made of decides how long the heater survives Florida water chemistry. Here is what the four materials mean in practice.
- Copper
- The traditional material and the cheapest to build. It transfers heat well and is fine on a well-balanced chlorine pool, but it is the least forgiving of low pH, high chlorine and salt. On the Gulf Coast it is usually the first component to fail.
- Cupro-nickel
- Copper alloyed with nickel. It gives up a little heat transfer in exchange for much better resistance to unbalanced water chemistry and salt. On gas heaters this is the upgrade worth having in Florida, and some manufacturers now ship it as standard.
- NiTek (nickel alloy)
- A nickel-alloy exchanger used on some gas heaters as a corrosion-resistant alternative to copper. Positioned between cupro-nickel and titanium in both durability and price.
- TitaniumThis heater
- Effectively immune to pool water chemistry, including salt. It is the standard on quality pool heat pumps and the reason a heat pump can sit on a salt pool for years without exchanger trouble. It is expensive, which is why you rarely see it on gas heaters.
Whatever the material, plumbing order matters just as much: a chlorinator or salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream.
How we scored it
- Warranty is 7 years parts and 2 years labor with no trip charges, marked to 4.5 because Pentair's cross-brand warranty table lists much shorter GulfStream terms.
- Titanium exchanger in a non-metallic cabinet earns a full 5 for a coastal Florida market.
- Performance scores a 5: 138,000 BTU/hr is the highest output in the line — above the heat/cool flagship — at COP 6.0 with a stated 4.0 floor at the AHRI low test point, and it does it on the same 50 amp breaker as the mid-size unit.
- Serviceability is helped by Florida manufacturing and held back by the authorized-service-center requirement for warranty work.
- Controls lose ground for dry-contact-only automation and no published app control.
- Value is strong for an owner who needs capacity and not chilling, because this is the cheapest way to the top of the line. The weighted score sits below the 4.8 starter score in the owner's comparison guide, and the gap is controls plus the unresolved warranty conflict.

HE150-RA questions
Why does the heat-only HE150-RA make more heat than the heat/cool HE150-TA?
Because it is a simpler machine. Pentair's spec sheet rates the HE150-RA at 138,000 BTU/hr and the HE150-TA at 135,000 BTU/hr at the same 80/80/80 test point; the reversing valve and the extra refrigerant plumbing that make chilling possible cost a little heating capacity.
Is a bigger heat pump always better?
No. A heat pump is designed to hold a temperature, not to chase one, so the practical benefit of extra capacity is faster recovery after a cold front rather than warmer water day to day. On a small or screened pool, a smaller unit at a lower price usually swims the same.
What electrical does it need?
208-230V single phase, 37 minimum circuit amps and a 50 amp maximum breaker — the same as the HE125-RA, and lower than the HE150-TA's 40 minimum circuit amps. A disconnect has to be within line of sight of the unit and the cabinet has to be bonded.
Will it run on a salt pool?
Yes. The exchanger is titanium and there is no copper in the water path. Keep the salt cell downstream of the heat pump with a check valve between them, which is what the manual asks for.
How cold can it get before it stops working?
It enters a defrost cycle below 48°F ambient air and the manual states it will not operate below 35°F. The reverse-cycle defrost that lets a unit keep running in the mid-30s is a heat/cool-model feature, so a heat-only HE150-RA relies on the standard defrost cycle.
Do you install GulfStream heat pumps in Sarasota?
Yes. We install and service GulfStream heat pumps throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida. The comparison content here is written for pool owners anywhere; the installation offer is local.
Is the HE150-RA right for your pool?
