Modern Pool Heating

Help Me Choose a Pool Heater

Six things pool owners actually say to us, what each one points to, and what to check on the spec sheet before you spend the money.

Choosing a pool heater comes down to a handful of decisions, and only the first one really matters: gas or electric heat pump. Everything after that — heat-only or heat and cool, what the heat exchanger is made of, how long the labor warranty runs — follows from how you actually use the pool.

So find the line below that sounds like something you would say out loud. Each one gives you the type of heater to look at first, the reason, what to check before you buy, and the models we have researched that fit. More than one may apply; if two of them pull in different directions, that is worth a phone call rather than a guess.

Start from how you use the pool

Not from a brand, and not from a price. The equipment follows the way the pool gets used, every time.

“I want my spa hot quickly”

Start with a gas heater

Nothing else is close. A gas heater burns fuel to make heat on demand, so a heater rated at 400,000 BTU/hr of gas input, at the 82% to 84% thermal efficiency typical of the category, still delivers more than twice the hourly heat of a large heat pump, and it does that whatever the air outside is doing. A spa holds a small volume of water, so that output turns straight into temperature — usually well under an hour from cold, against many hours for a heat pump.

The tradeoff is what it costs to run, and for a spa that tradeoff is the right way round. You run a gas heater hard, briefly, and then it sits on the pad costing nothing until the next time.

What to look at first

  • The BTU input rating first, then thermal efficiency, which is how much of that input reaches the water. A spa, or a pool and spa sharing one heater, usually means the 350,000 to 400,000 BTU end of a line rather than the smallest model in it.
  • What fuel you can actually get. Natural gas needs a meter and a line big enough to feed the burner; propane needs a tank sized for the burn rate. Either one moves the installed cost more than the choice of heater does.
  • The heat exchanger material, which we list beside every gas model. Cupro-nickel or a nickel alloy instead of plain copper if the pool is salt or the equipment pad is near the water.

“I heat the pool often and want lower operating cost”

Start with an electric heat pump

A heat pump does not make heat, it moves it. It pulls warmth out of warm, humid air and puts it into the pool, which is why it returns several units of heat for every unit of electricity it draws — the COP figure on the spec sheet. On the Gulf Coast, where the air stays warm and wet most of the year, that is as close to cheap powered heating as this equipment gets.

What you give up is speed and cold-weather output. Heat pumps warm a swimming pool gradually over many hours. Actual heating speed depends on pool volume, heater output, starting water temperature, outdoor air temperature, humidity, wind conditions and whether the pool is covered. Proper heater sizing and the use of a pool cover can significantly affect recovery time. It is equipment for holding a temperature through a season, not for surprising the family on Saturday morning.

What to look at first

  • BTU and COP quoted at the same published test point. Manufacturers publish several, and comparing a headline number from one against a modest number from another is the most common mistake in this category.
  • The heat exchanger. Titanium is standard on most pool heat pumps and it is the right answer for Florida water.
  • The compressor warranty, separately from parts. The compressor is the expensive failure on a heat pump.
  • What the pump has to do. A heat pump needs a minimum flow rate, which on a variable-speed pump means programming a heating speed rather than leaving it on the lowest setting.

“I live in Florida and also want to cool the pool”

Start with a heat and cool (reversible) heat pump

By July a Florida pool in full sun can sit in the low nineties, and a dark interior finish makes it worse. A reversible heat pump runs its refrigeration cycle backwards and takes heat out of the water instead of putting it in. It is the only practical way to get a pool back down to something that feels like swimming rather than bathing.

Most manufacturers sell the heat-only and the heat/cool version of the same machine under nearly identical model numbers. The difference is a reversing valve inside the cabinet, not a badge on the outside, so check the exact SKU on the quote before you assume a unit cools.

What to look at first

  • The suffix on the model number, and the cooling capacity if the manufacturer publishes one. It is normally lower than the heating capacity.
  • Whether cooling covers the spa as well as the pool. Often it does not, and the manual is the place that says so.
  • The price gap against the heat-only version of the same unit, and whether the handful of weeks you would use it justifies that gap. For some pools it plainly does; for a shaded pool it plainly does not.

“I have a salt pool or a coastal, aggressive environment”

Start with the heat exchanger material, then the cabinet

Salt chlorine generators and coastal air are hard on metal. On a heat pump the exchanger is normally titanium, which is effectively indifferent to pool water chemistry. On a gas heater the choice is real: plain copper is the cheapest exchanger and the first thing to go on an aggressive pool, while cupro-nickel and nickel-alloy exchangers hold up far better for a modest difference in price.

Material is not a substitute for chemistry. A corrosion-resistant exchanger buys margin for the days your water drifts out of range; it does not buy permission to stop testing it. Manufacturer warranties generally have something to say about out-of-range water, and that paragraph is worth reading before you buy rather than after a failure.

What to look at first

  • The exchanger material, which this site lists beside every model instead of burying it three pages into a spec sheet.
  • What the cabinet and the fasteners are made of. A plastic or properly coated cabinet outlasts painted steel by years three blocks from the water.
  • Where the chlorinator or salt cell sits in the plumbing. It belongs downstream of the heater, and getting that wrong is a warranty problem rather than a matter of preference.

“I only heat the pool occasionally”

Start with a gas heater, usually

If you heat for a long weekend three or four times a winter, how fast the water comes up matters more than what each degree costs. A gas heater is idle at no cost and then delivers heat on demand. A heat pump warms a pool gradually over many hours, which makes it the wrong tool for a decision made on a Thursday night.

The arithmetic flips the moment heating stops being occasional. If it turns out to mean most weekends from November through March, price both: over a season the running-cost difference is large enough to pay for a fair amount of equipment.

What to look at first

  • The BTU input rating and thermal efficiency, because together they are what buys the speed you are paying for.
  • Standing costs on the fuel. A natural gas meter charge or a propane tank rental is there whether you heat that month or not.
  • A cover. On an occasionally-heated pool nothing else you can buy holds heat as cheaply, and it makes a smaller heater behave like a bigger one.

“I want strong warranty coverage”

Start with parts, labor, compressor and heat exchanger, compared separately

A headline warranty number is usually the longest single term a manufacturer publishes, and that term is usually attached to one component. A ten-year heat exchanger is not a ten-year warranty: if labor runs out at year two, then in year three you are paying a technician to fit a free part.

So read the coverage as four numbers, which is how every model page here lists it. Labor is the one that decides what a repair actually costs you, and it is almost always the shortest. Then ask who honors it — coverage you can only claim through an authorized service center is worth exactly what the nearest authorized service center is worth.

What to look at first

  • The labor term first, then parts, then component-specific coverage on the compressor or the exchanger.
  • Whether where you buy affects eligibility. Several manufacturers restrict warranty on equipment bought outside the professional channel, which is a real cost hidden inside a cheap online price.
  • Registration deadlines. Some terms only apply if the unit is registered within a set window after installation, and nobody chases you about it.

What we do not do here

We do not publish a fixed internet price for a pool heater. What you see on every model page is a relative price tier — $ through $$$$ — which says where a heater sits against others in its own category and nothing more.

An installed quote depends on gas-line sizing, electrical service, pad work, plumbing, venting, permits and automation. Those are site conditions, not equipment specs, and any number published before someone has looked at your equipment pad is a guess with a decimal point on it.

We also keep our own rating separate from third-party reviews, and we leave a spec blank rather than filling it in when the manufacturer does not publish it.

The questions that come next

Is a gas heater or a heat pump cheaper to run?

A heat pump, by a wide margin, as long as it runs in reasonable weather. It moves existing heat rather than making it, so it returns several units of heat per unit of electricity. A gas heater converts fuel to heat at somewhere between about 82% and 96% thermal efficiency depending on the model, and the fuel is the expensive input. The gas heater wins on speed, not on cost.

Can one heater handle both the pool and the spa?

Usually yes, if it is sized for the pool and plumbed with the valves to isolate the spa. That is the normal arrangement for a gas heater, which has the output to bring a spa up quickly. A heat pump can hold a spa temperature but will not raise it fast, so pool-and-spa properties that want spa-on-demand often end up with a heat pump for the pool and gas for the spa.

Do I actually need a heat and cool heat pump in Florida?

It depends on the pool, not on the state. A pool in full sun with a dark interior finish can sit in the low nineties in July, and cooling turns those weeks back into swimming weather. A shaded pool, or a pool the family stops using in high summer anyway, rarely justifies the extra cost. It is a question worth answering honestly before you pay the difference.

What size heater do I need?

Sizing comes from surface area, how warm you want the water, how much of the year you want it, whether there is a cover, and how exposed the pool is to wind and shade. Rules of thumb get you to the right family of sizes; they do not replace a look at the actual pool. Send us the dimensions and we will tell you what the load looks like, whether or not we install it.

Why do you not show prices on these pages?

Because an installed price is not a property of the heater. Gas line sizing, electrical service, pad work, plumbing, venting, permits and automation all move it, and two identical heaters on two pads ten miles apart do not cost the same to install. We publish a relative price tier so you can see where a model sits against others in its own category, and we quote the real number after we have seen the site.
