Why homeowners consider it
- It is the same heater as the H250FDN with a propane gas valve and orifices: same 250,000 BTU/hr input, same 84% thermal efficiency, same cupro-nickel exchanger. Choosing propane does not cost you efficiency or build quality.
- Cupro-nickel is standard rather than an upgrade, which matters on a salt pool and matters more on a coastal lot. Hayward's own brochure points out that competitors charge hundreds of dollars for the same material.
- At 25 inches wide and 165 pounds on Hayward's product page — its 2023 brochure lists 134 pounds for the same cabinet — it fits the crowded side-yard pads that are normal on Florida builds, and the 2 inch by 2-1/2 inch CPVC union connections let it drop into an existing plumbing layout.
- Because propane is delivered rather than metered, a 250,000 BTU/hr heater is easier to live with than a 400,000 BTU/hr one — it burns through a tank noticeably more slowly for the same pool.
- Front-panel-only service access and a published diagnostic code list keep repair visits short, and Universal H-Series parts are stocked throughout Florida.
What to know before buying
- Propane costs more per unit of heat than natural gas in our market, and it comes with a tank, a location for the tank and a delivery contract. Price the fuel honestly before comparing this to an electric heat pump.
- Propane wants more inlet pressure than natural gas: Hayward specifies a minimum inlet of 10.0 inches w.c. and a maximum of 13.0 inches w.c., with a 7.0 inch w.c. manifold pressure. The regulator and line sizing have to be right or you will chase IF ignition-failure codes.
- It needs at least 25 GPM through the exchanger, with a 125 GPM system maximum. On a variable-speed pump the heating speed has to be programmed high enough to satisfy the water pressure switch.
- Hayward specifies 6 inches of rear clearance and 12 inches on the sides, and a minimum operating temperature of 40°F. Indoor installations on propane need an 8 inch vent pipe for the 400 and 6 inch for this 250.
- Standard Expert Line coverage is 3 years parts and 1 year field labor; the 3-year labor term only applies when the heater comes through a Hayward Rewards dealer, and the W3-prefixed version sold online is an Open Line SKU with 1 year parts and no labor.
- This is the non-OmniX SKU. The equivalent heater with Hayward's embedded OmniX smart control is the HS250FDP.
Warranty, term by term
The warranty only matters on the parts that actually fail. Here is how this one splits up.
- Parts
- 3 years
- Labor
- 1 year field labor (3 years when sold by a Hayward Rewards dealer)
Hayward's 2026 Expert Line residential terms cover in-ground products at 3 years parts and 1 year field labor as standard, extended to 3 years field labor when the heater is sold by a Hayward Rewards dealer (the program formerly branded Totally Hayward). There is no separate longer heat-exchanger term — the cupro-nickel exchanger is covered under the parts warranty as original equipment, while a heat exchanger bought later as a replacement part carries 1 year parts only with no labor. Heating elements and o-rings are treated as normal wear items. Hayward states its limited warranties apply only to product bought from Hayward or a Hayward authorized seller, and the W3-prefixed version of this heater is an Open Line SKU carrying 1 year parts only with no labor coverage. Professional installation and authorized-channel requirements may apply. The commercial ASME variant has its own warranty document, which we have not verified.
Why the heat exchanger matters
The heat exchanger is the part of a pool heater that actually moves heat into the water, and what it is made of decides how long the heater survives Florida water chemistry. Here is what the four materials mean in practice.
- Copper
- The traditional material and the cheapest to build. It transfers heat well and is fine on a well-balanced chlorine pool, but it is the least forgiving of low pH, high chlorine and salt. On the Gulf Coast it is usually the first component to fail.
- Cupro-nickelThis heater
- Copper alloyed with nickel. It gives up a little heat transfer in exchange for much better resistance to unbalanced water chemistry and salt. On gas heaters this is the upgrade worth having in Florida, and some manufacturers now ship it as standard.
- NiTek (nickel alloy)
- A nickel-alloy exchanger used on some gas heaters as a corrosion-resistant alternative to copper. Positioned between cupro-nickel and titanium in both durability and price.
- Titanium
- Effectively immune to pool water chemistry, including salt. It is the standard on quality pool heat pumps and the reason a heat pump can sit on a salt pool for years without exchanger trouble. It is expensive, which is why you rarely see it on gas heaters.
Whatever the material, plumbing order matters just as much: a chlorinator or salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream.
How we scored it
- Warranty is identical to the natural gas SKU: 3 years parts, 1 year field labor standard and up to 3 years field labor through a Hayward Rewards dealer. Held back from a 5 only by the channel condition.
- Cupro-nickel standard across the line is what earns the durability score, and it is worth more on a propane job because the tank often sits on a coastal or rural lot where equipment takes a beating.
- 84% thermal efficiency is the top figure in Hayward's published table, and it is the same on propane as on natural gas.
- Serviceability is the standout: front-panel access, universal unions, a published diagnostic code list and parts stocked throughout Florida.
- Controls lose a point because smart control means adding a Hayward Omni system or buying the HS250FDP instead.
- Value scores 5 on the equipment itself. Note that this rates the heater, not the fuel — propane's running cost is a separate decision covered in 'What to know before buying'.

H250FDP questions
Is the propane version any different from the natural gas H250FDN?
Mechanically it is the same heater with a propane gas valve and orifices. Input, thermal efficiency, heat exchanger, dimensions, flow requirements and warranty are all identical. What changes is the gas pressure the heater needs — 10 to 13 inches w.c. on propane against 4.5 to 10.5 on natural gas — and the indoor vent pipe diameter.
How much propane does it use?
Hayward does not publish a consumption figure for the 250. As arithmetic, propane carries roughly 91,500 BTU per gallon, so a 250,000 BTU/hr heater burns on the order of 2.5 to 3 gallons an hour at full fire — and for comparison, Hayward's own product-page Q&A for the 400,000 BTU model states it burns about 4.5 gallons per hour. Real usage depends on how far below setpoint the pool is and how often the heater cycles.
Do I need a big propane tank?
Bigger than you would put in for a grill, yes. Tank size, placement and setbacks are set by your propane supplier and local code, not by Hayward, and the delivery contract is part of the running cost. We work that out with the supplier as part of quoting the job.
Will it work on a salt water pool?
Yes. The cupro-nickel heat exchanger is standard on every Universal H-Series model and Hayward describes it as offering excellent salt water and chemical corrosion resistance. The salt cell has to be plumbed downstream of the heater, never upstream.
What does the warranty actually cover?
Hayward's 2026 Expert Line residential terms give 3 years parts and 1 year field labor, extended to 3 years field labor when the heater is sold by a Hayward Rewards dealer. There is no separate heat-exchanger term, heating elements and o-rings are treated as wear items, and the W3 version sold online is an Open Line SKU with 1 year parts and no labor.
Do you install propane pool heaters in Sarasota?
Yes, and it is a common job here because large parts of Sarasota and Manatee County have no natural gas at the street. We install and service propane pool heaters throughout Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, Florida. This comparison content is written for pool owners anywhere; the installation offer is local.
