Pool Heating in Punta Gorda, FL
On Charlotte Harbor and the Peace River, with canal neighborhoods built for boat access to the Gulf, Punta Gorda pools need equipment chosen for salt and set above storm water.
For most Punta Gorda pools, a heat pump with a titanium heat exchanger is the right primary heater, with solar on a good south-facing roof and gas for spas or quick heat. Canal and harbor-front homes need a coastal specification and careful placement, and after Hurricane Charley in 2004 and Hurricane Ian in 2022, equipment height and anchoring deserve real thought.
Punta Gorda is the seat of Charlotte County, on the south bank of the tidal Peace River and the eastern shore of Charlotte Harbor. Punta Gorda Isles, developed from 1959, was laid out with 55 miles of canals that gave home sites access to the harbor and the Gulf, and Burnt Store Isles followed as another waterfront community. For a lot of homes here, salt air comes with the address.
We installed a GulfStream HE110-RA in Punta Gorda, the entry model in GulfStream's HE line, set beside the house with new PVC and unions at the unit so it can be disconnected and pulled for service without cutting pipe. It's a good reminder that not every pool needs the biggest heat pump on the market.
Best heating choices for pools in Punta Gorda
Specify for salt and storm water first, then pick the method that fits how you swim.
Right-sized heat pump with a titanium heat exchanger
You swim regularly and want a steady temperature. Size it to the pool rather than buying the biggest unit: on the right pool, a smaller heat pump like the HE110-RA holds temperature for less money up front and asks less of the electrical panel.
Gas heater for a spa or occasional heat
You want a spa hot quickly, or the house is heated mainly for visits. On canal and harbor-front lots, specify cupro-nickel, and check whether natural gas reaches your street or the job needs propane.
Solar pool heating
You have a south-facing roof plane in good sun, ideally on a roof replaced in recent years. If an HOA is involved, Florida law protects rooftop collectors, with limits on placement.
A raised, anchored equipment pad
Your pad sits low or took water in 2022 or 2024. Raising and anchoring the equipment protects whatever heater you choose.
What's different about heating a pool in Punta Gorda
Canal homes and harbor air
On a canal or harbor-front lot, treat every install as a coastal one. Hayward's heat pump manual says a unit in an oceanfront area should be placed out of direct spray of sand and salt, with a physical barrier outside the minimum clearances against the prevailing wind worth considering, and the same logic applies on the harbor. It also warns that sprinkler mist from well water high in minerals and salt can cause corrosion. Ask for titanium on a heat pump and cupro-nickel on a gas heater.
Storm surge in the harbor
Ian's eye made landfall near Punta Gorda in September 2022, according to the National Hurricane Center, and two years later the Center estimated Milton's surge at 5 to 8 feet above ground in the northern harbor and along the Peace River, where National Weather Service crews found high-water marks of 6 feet above ground. Look the property up on FEMA's Flood Map Service Center. FEMA's guidance is to raise outdoor equipment as high as practical, preferring a platform attached to the house over posts.
Anchoring for hurricane winds
Equipment that's raised also has to stay put. Pentair's MasterTemp manual says Florida building codes require the heater to be anchored to the pad or platform against hurricane winds, and Hayward's heat pump manual supplies anchor clamps and points installers to wind-load requirements. If your equipment was reset after a storm without them, it's worth correcting.
Right-sizing the heat pump
The HE110-RA is rated at 110,000 BTU/hr at 80°F air, 80°F water and 80 percent relative humidity, and it calls for a 40-amp maximum breaker, the smallest in GulfStream's HE line. On a modest pool with a cover, a unit that size can be the sensible choice; on a large pool or one heated without a cover, a bigger model earns its keep. Pool volume, the temperature you want and how much of the winter you swim should drive the decision.
Natural gas or propane
Natural gas is piped, and the Florida Public Service Commission's statewide map notes that service areas are approximations, to be confirmed with the utility. Where there's no main, a gas heater means propane, and on a low lot near the water the tank and heater shouldn't go in sunken or boxed-in spots, which is also where storm water collects.

“I can't say enough about Henry. He was fantastic. He was so thorough and professional and took the time to explain everything. His workmanship is exceptional and exceeded my expectations. I will use him going forward for all of my pool needs.”
“After multiple attempts, and money, to figure out why our pool lights weren't working, Henry was the only servicer who correctly diagnosed the problem and addressed the issues. We did ultimately replace the fixtures and Henry provided the most competitive, and upfront, estimate as to the charge for parts and labor. He completed the repair, cleaned up any debris and dirt, and, unlike our experience with other companies, made certain everything was working properly. Would highly recommend.”
Punta Gorda pool heating questions
Do you install and service pool heaters in Punta Gorda?
Yes, including Punta Gorda Isles and Burnt Store Isles. Punta Gorda is within the area we cover across Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, and our published work here includes a GulfStream HE110-RA heat pump. Beyond new installs, we repair and replace heat pumps, solar and gas heaters, including ones someone else installed.
What's the best pool heater for a canal home in Punta Gorda Isles?
For a pool used through the cooler months, a heat pump with a titanium exchanger and a cabinet that can't rust, sited out of the wind off the water and away from sprinkler mist, on a pad set as high as practical. Add gas if you want a spa hot on short notice.
Is a smaller heat pump like the HE110-RA big enough for my pool?
It can be, depending on pool volume, the temperature you want and whether you use a cover. Heat pumps warm a swimming pool gradually over many hours. Actual heating speed depends on pool volume, heater output, starting water temperature, outdoor air temperature, humidity, wind conditions and whether the pool is covered. Proper heater sizing and the use of a pool cover can significantly affect recovery time.
Should I raise my pool equipment after Ian and Milton?
If your pad sits low or took water, yes, it's worth doing, and anchoring should be part of the same job. FEMA recommends elevating outdoor equipment as high as practical, and Pentair's heater manual notes that Florida building codes require its heater to be anchored against hurricane winds.
Can I run a heater on a saltwater pool near the harbor?
Yes. Titanium heat pump exchangers tolerate salt, and cupro-nickel is the gas-heater choice. Plumb it in the right order: GulfStream's installation manual sets the sequence as pump, filter, heater, chlorination system, then pool, so the salt cell sits after the heater.
