Why homeowners consider it
- It heats and cools. The TA suffix is the reverse-cycle version, so the same unit that warms the pool in winter can chill it in late summer, when an unscreened Gulf Coast pool can sit close to bath temperature. Cooling applies to the pool only, not a spa.
- The control offers two ways to use it: a heat/cool mode that holds one setpoint and swaps between heating and chilling when the water drifts past a deadband (2°F by default), and a cool-only mode that simply chills to a setpoint.
- A titanium heat exchanger in a UV-stabilized ABS cabinet is standard, which is the right specification for salt pools and coastal air and means there is no steel shell to rust out.
- Heat/cool models get a feature the heat-only units do not: the manual lists "Reverse Cycle Defrost" as a heat/cool-model option that lets the unit keep running in the mid-30s°F using hot gas to clear the coil.
- 7 years parts and 2 years labor is published on the sell sheet and the SKU page, with no trip charges during the labor period, and the units are built by G&F Manufacturing in North Fort Myers, Florida.
What to know before buying
- Chilling costs a little heating capacity. Pentair rates the HE125-TA at 115,000 BTU/hr against 118,000 BTU/hr for the otherwise-equivalent heat-only HE125-RA, and the heat/cool version costs more. If you will never chill the pool, buy the RA.
- The chiller has to be ordered with the unit. The manual states that heat/cool functions only appear when the unit was built with the chiller components, and that the modes then have to be enabled in the service menu — a technician cannot add cooling to a heat-only unit afterwards.
- Cooling is pool only, never spa. The installation manual states that plainly, so a heat/cool unit will not chill an attached spa.
- Electrically it is 208-230V single phase, 37 minimum circuit amps and a 50 amp maximum breaker; flow has to sit between 30 and 70 GPM with 45-50 GPM optimal. Older Florida panels and slow variable-speed pump schedules both need checking before this goes in.
- Clearances are 12 inches on each side and four feet above, outdoor only. The installation manual warns that enclosed or overhung locations recirculate cold air, push the unit into defrost and may void the warranty on refrigerant components.
- Automation and remote chilling are dry-contact only. The manual states the unit cannot be connected to automation over RS-485, and that remote chiller control needs a second spare dry-contact relay in the controller — any relay that sends voltage will damage the heat pump's transformer.
- Running a heat pump in cooling mode is still running a compressor. It is cheaper than most people assume, but it is not free, and on a screened or well-shaded pool the cooling season may be short enough that the price difference over an RA model is hard to justify.
Warranty, term by term
The warranty only matters on the parts that actually fail. Here is how this one splits up.
- Parts
- 7 years
- Labor
- 2 years
Pentair publishes 7 years parts and 2 years labor for GulfStream on the sell sheet, the GulfStream product page and this SKU's own page, and the sell sheet adds that there are no trip charges during the labor period. Pentair's cross-brand warranty table contradicts that: it lists "GulfStream Heat Pump" at 2 years and "GulfStream Heat Pump (Parts)" at 3 years. We could not reconcile the two, so get the current terms in writing before you buy. No separate heat-exchanger term is published — the titanium exchanger is covered under the parts warranty — and the manual states that warranty service must be handled by an authorized service center. Pentair lists GulfStream in the in-ground equipment section of its warranty page, and the channel rule stated there governs everything on it: the published term runs only when the equipment is bought from a brick-and-mortar retailer, pool builder or pool service company and installed by a qualified professional who charges a fee for their services, while a unit bought from an internet retailer receives a one-year parts-only warranty with no labor coverage at all. Professional installation / authorized-channel requirements may apply.
Why the heat exchanger matters
The heat exchanger is the part of a pool heater that actually moves heat into the water, and what it is made of decides how long the heater survives Florida water chemistry. Here is what the four materials mean in practice.
- Copper
- The traditional material and the cheapest to build. It transfers heat well and is fine on a well-balanced chlorine pool, but it is the least forgiving of low pH, high chlorine and salt. On the Gulf Coast it is usually the first component to fail.
- Cupro-nickel
- Copper alloyed with nickel. It gives up a little heat transfer in exchange for much better resistance to unbalanced water chemistry and salt. On gas heaters this is the upgrade worth having in Florida, and some manufacturers now ship it as standard.
- NiTek (nickel alloy)
- A nickel-alloy exchanger used on some gas heaters as a corrosion-resistant alternative to copper. Positioned between cupro-nickel and titanium in both durability and price.
- TitaniumThis heater
- Effectively immune to pool water chemistry, including salt. It is the standard on quality pool heat pumps and the reason a heat pump can sit on a salt pool for years without exchanger trouble. It is expensive, which is why you rarely see it on gas heaters.
Whatever the material, plumbing order matters just as much: a chlorinator or salt cell belongs downstream of the heater, never upstream.
How we scored it
- Warranty is 7 years parts and 2 years labor with no trip charges, held to 4.5 because Pentair's cross-brand warranty table lists much shorter GulfStream terms and the documents disagree.
- Titanium exchanger and a non-metallic cabinet is the strongest durability package for salt pools and coastal lots, so durability scores a full 5.
- COP 6.0 at 80/80/80 with a stated 4.0 floor at the AHRI low test point is strong; the model gives up 3,000 BTU/hr of heating capacity to its heat-only sibling for the reversing hardware.
- Serviceability is helped by Florida manufacturing and hurt by the authorized-service-center requirement; chiller-specific faults also need a technician who knows the service menu.
- Controls are the weak spot in a way that matters more here than on a heat-only model: remote chilling depends on a spare dry-contact relay in the automation system, and there is no app.
- Value holds at 4.5 — reverse cycle for a modest premium over the RA, with the caveat that you pay for cooling in both money and 3,000 BTU/hr of heating. The weighted score sits below the 4.8 starter score in the owner's comparison guide because of controls and the unresolved warranty conflict.
What third-party reviews say
Outdoor Direct (retailer) — GulfStream line rating, not this SKU alone
4.9/5 from 34 reviews
Retailer sample, not a manufacturer or independent rating. The HE125TA listing on Outdoor Direct showed 4.9/5 from 34 reviews, 94% of them five stars (32 of 34) and the remaining two at four stars. The identical 4.9 from 34 reviews appears on every GulfStream listing in that store, so read it as feedback on the retailer's GulfStream sales overall rather than on this model alone. That listing also quotes 118,000 BTU; Pentair's spec sheet rates the HE125-TA at 115,000 BTU/hr at 80/80/80, and we use the manufacturer figure.

HE125-TA questions
How does pool cooling actually work?
The refrigerant circuit runs backwards. Instead of pulling heat out of the outdoor air and putting it into the water, a reversing valve sends it the other way: heat comes out of the pool water and is dumped into the air over the fan. It is the same trick a home air conditioner uses, aimed at the pool.
How cold will it make the pool?
Pentair does not publish a cooling capacity or a minimum water temperature for the HE125-TA, so we will not invent one. In practice a reverse-cycle heat pump takes the top off a pool that has drifted into the high 80s or low 90s rather than turning it into a cold plunge, and it works best overnight when the air is cooler.
Can it cool my spa too?
No. The installation manual states the cooling feature is for the pool only, not the spa.
Is a heat/cool model worth the extra money in Florida?
It depends on the pool. An unscreened, south-facing pool with no shade is a good candidate — those are the ones that get uncomfortably warm in July and August. A screened, shaded pool often does not need it, and the heat-only HE125-RA is both cheaper and rated 3,000 BTU/hr higher for heating.
Will it run with my pool automation?
Through dry contacts only. The manual states there is no RS-485 connection and Pentair publishes no app control. Remote chilling needs a second spare dry-contact relay in the automation controller — and only a dry contact, because a relay that sends voltage will damage the heat pump's transformer.
Do you install GulfStream heat/cool heat pumps in Sarasota?
