Modern Pool Heating

Pool Heating in Englewood, FL

Englewood straddles the Sarasota and Charlotte county line and runs out to Manasota Key, so salt air, storm surge and which county issues your permit all shape the job.

For most Englewood pools, a heat pump with a titanium heat exchanger is the right primary heater, solar is worth pricing on a south-facing roof, and gas fits spas and short-notice heating. Near the water and on Manasota Key, specify the equipment for salt and set it high; farther inland, the roof and the electrical panel matter more.

Englewood is a census-designated community split between Sarasota and Charlotte counties. This page sits under Sarasota County, but we work on both sides of the line, and the line matters for one practical reason: your permit comes from whichever county your home is in. Englewood Beach, on Manasota Key across Lemon Bay, is on the Charlotte County side.

The 2024 hurricane season hit Englewood twice: Helene's rain and surge, then Milton's surge less than two weeks later. The National Hurricane Center estimated Milton's surge at 6 to 9 feet above ground from Venice south to Boca Grande, with an isolated peak of up to 10 feet near Manasota Key. The nearest projects shown below are in Charlotte County: a GulfStream HE110-RA in Punta Gorda and a Pentair MasterTemp gas heater in Babcock Ranch.

Best heating choices for pools in Englewood

Set the specification by how close you are to the water, then choose the heater by how you swim.

Electric heat pump with a titanium heat exchanger

You use the pool most weeks in winter and want it held steady. Near Lemon Bay or the Gulf, choose a cabinet that can't rust and a spot out of direct salt spray and sprinkler mist.

Gas heater for a spa or for visits

You want a spa hot quickly, or the pool is heated mainly when people are staying. Specify cupro-nickel near the water, and check whether natural gas reaches your street or the job needs propane.

Solar pool heating

Your roof has a south-facing plane in good sun. Collectors on the roof are well above any storm water, and solar is one of Florida's lowest-operating-cost methods when the home has suitable roof orientation and sun exposure.

A raised pad, whichever heater you choose

Your equipment took water during Helene or Milton, or your lot sits low near the bay. Raising the pad protects the heater, pump and controls together.

What's different about heating a pool in Englewood

Storm surge and equipment height

After two surges in two weeks in 2024, equipment height belongs at the top of the list near the water. Start with your lot's flood zone on FEMA's Flood Map Service Center, then decide how high the pad should go; FEMA's advice for home utilities is as high as practical. Whatever the height, the heater still needs its airflow clearances, and the plumbing and electrical have to be rerouted to reach it.

Salt air on Manasota Key and near the bay

On Manasota Key, Hayward's oceanfront instruction applies directly: keep the heat pump out of direct spray of sand and salt. Along Lemon Bay on the mainland, the same caution applies on a smaller scale. The manual also flags sprinklers fed by well water, which can carry minerals and salt onto the unit. Titanium exchangers are standard on current heat pumps; on a gas heater, ask for cupro-nickel.

Two counties, two permit offices

Englewood straddles the Sarasota-Charlotte county line, so the permit for a heater or a new pad comes from Sarasota County or Charlotte County depending on your address. The equipment advice is the same either way; the paperwork isn't.

Gulf-front lots on Manasota Key

On a Gulf-front Manasota Key lot, check where the state's Coastal Construction Control Line runs. Building or digging seaward of it, a new equipment platform included, generally takes a Florida Department of Environmental Protection authorization under section 161.053 of the Florida Statutes as well as the county permit, so find the line on DEP's map before the pad is designed.

Propane on a low lot

Where there's no natural gas main, a gas heater runs on propane, and on a low-lying lot near the bay that matters twice. Jandy's manual notes that propane is heavier than air and advises against putting propane heaters in enclosed areas such as pits, and sunken or boxed-in spots are also where storm water collects. Keep the heater and tank up and in the open.

Pool repair & service
“After multiple attempts, and money, to figure out why our pool lights weren't working, Henry was the only servicer who correctly diagnosed the problem and addressed the issues. We did ultimately replace the fixtures and Henry provided the most competitive, and upfront, estimate as to the charge for parts and labor. He completed the repair, cleaned up any debris and dirt, and, unlike our experience with other companies, made certain everything was working properly. Would highly recommend.”

Englewood pool heating questions

Do you install and service pool heaters in Englewood?

Yes, on both the Sarasota and Charlotte County sides, including Manasota Key. Englewood is within the area we cover across Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, and that includes replacing and repairing storm-damaged equipment as well as new heat pump, solar and gas installs. We haven't published an Englewood job yet; the projects on this page are nearby, with their real locations shown.

Which county issues my pool heater permit in Englewood?

The county your home is in. Englewood is split between Sarasota and Charlotte counties, and Englewood Beach on Manasota Key is on the Charlotte side. Gulf-front work seaward of the Coastal Construction Control Line can also need DEP authorization.

Should I raise my pool equipment after Helene and Milton?

If your pad sits low or took water, it's worth serious thought. The National Hurricane Center estimated Milton's surge near Manasota Key at up to 10 feet above ground, and FEMA recommends elevating outdoor equipment as high as practical. Raising the pad when the heater or pump is being replaced anyway is the most economical time to do it.

What's the best pool heater for a home on Manasota Key?

For a pool used through the cooler months, a heat pump with a titanium exchanger and a non-rusting cabinet, sited out of direct spray and set as high as practical. Add gas for a spa, or solar if the roof faces south. On the key, placement and height decide how long the equipment lasts.

Can I use a heater with a saltwater pool?

Yes. Heat pumps use titanium exchangers that tolerate salt, and on a gas heater cupro-nickel is the material to choose. Where the salt cell sits matters as much: GulfStream's user guide puts in-line chlorinators and salt chlorine generators on the return side of the heat pump, and suggests a check valve between the two to stop backflow into the heater.
