Modern Pool Heating

Pool Heating in Nokomis, FL

Nokomis sits on the mainland between Osprey and Venice with Casey Key just offshore, and a pool on the key needs a different specification from one a couple of miles inland.

For most Nokomis pools, an electric heat pump is the right primary heater, with solar where the roof faces south and gas for spas or occasional heating. On Casey Key, that same heat pump needs a coastal specification and a carefully chosen spot. On the mainland, the questions are more about the pad, the electrical panel and the roof.

Nokomis is an unincorporated community in Sarasota County between Osprey and Venice, so permits for most Nokomis addresses come from Sarasota County. Casey Key, the barrier island to the northwest, is lined with beachfront homes and sits south of Siesta Key along the same stretch of Gulf.

We don't have a Nokomis job published on the site yet. The nearest installs shown below are a GulfStream HE150-RA on Siesta Key, the next barrier island north of Casey Key, and a GulfStream HE110-RA in Punta Gorda.

Best heating choices for pools in Nokomis

Split the decision by setting. Island homes on Casey Key need materials and placement chosen for salt and surge; mainland homes need a pad and panel that suit the heater.

Electric heat pump

You use the pool regularly through the cooler months. On Casey Key, choose titanium and a cabinet that can't rust and keep it out of direct Gulf spray. On the mainland, the priorities are open air around the unit and room on the electrical panel for its dedicated circuit.

Solar pool heating

Your roof has a south-facing plane without heavy shade from oaks or palms. It's one of Florida's lowest-operating-cost methods when the home has suitable roof orientation and sun exposure, and it pairs well with a heat pump for cloudy spells.

Gas heater for a spa or occasional use

You want a spa hot within the hour, or the pool is heated only for visits. Check whether natural gas reaches your street; if not, it means propane and a tank.

A raised equipment pad, whatever the heater

Your pad sits low, took water during the 2024 storms, or you're on Casey Key. Raising the equipment protects whichever heater you choose, and the pump and controls with it.

What's different about heating a pool in Nokomis

Casey Key: salt air and Gulf-front rules

Hayward's heat pump manual says a unit in an oceanfront area should be placed out of direct spray of sand and salt, with a physical barrier outside the minimum clearances against the prevailing beachfront wind worth considering. On a Gulf-front Casey Key lot, there's a second question: construction or excavation seaward of the state's Coastal Construction Control Line generally needs authorization from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection under section 161.053 of the Florida Statutes. Check DEP's map before planning a new pad on the beach side of the house.

Storm surge on both sides of the bay

The National Hurricane Center estimated Hurricane Milton's surge at 4 to 6 feet above ground from Longboat Key to Venice, the stretch that includes Nokomis and Casey Key. Pumps, boards, heater cabinets and disconnects don't survive submersion. Look up your lot on FEMA's Flood Map Service Center, and if the pad sits low, FEMA's guidance is to raise outdoor equipment as high as practical, preferably on a platform attached to the house rather than on posts.

Mainland homes and the equipment pad

On the mainland, the pad usually decides the job: whether there's room for the clearances a heat pump needs, whether the panel has space for a dedicated 208-230V circuit, and whether the plumbing order leaves the salt cell or chlorinator downstream of the heater. It's worth sorting those out before choosing a model.

Screen enclosures and airflow

A heat pump moves a lot of air and discharges it colder. GulfStream's installation manual warns against overhangs and enclosed spaces that make the unit recirculate its own cold air, and Hayward lists open space above the unit as best practice. The corner where the house meets the pool cage can be the worst spot on the lot for a heat pump, even when it's the most convenient.

Natural gas or propane

Whether natural gas reaches your street is a question for the utility. The Florida Public Service Commission's statewide map says service areas are approximations and to contact the utility for specifics. Without a main, a gas heater runs on propane, which brings a tank, deliveries and placement rules.

Pool repair & service
“After multiple attempts, and money, to figure out why our pool lights weren't working, Henry was the only servicer who correctly diagnosed the problem and addressed the issues. We did ultimately replace the fixtures and Henry provided the most competitive, and upfront, estimate as to the charge for parts and labor. He completed the repair, cleaned up any debris and dirt, and, unlike our experience with other companies, made certain everything was working properly. Would highly recommend.”

Nokomis pool heating questions

Do you install and service pool heaters in Nokomis and on Casey Key?

Yes, on the mainland and on Casey Key. Both are within the area we cover across Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County, and we handle heat pumps, solar and gas heaters from new installs to repairs on existing equipment. We don't have a Nokomis job published yet; the nearby projects on this page carry their real locations.

What's different about heating a pool on Casey Key?

Mainly materials, placement and height. Use a titanium exchanger on a heat pump or cupro-nickel on a gas heater, keep the unit out of direct spray and sprinkler mist, and set the pad as high as your flood zone calls for. On a Gulf-front lot, check the state's Coastal Construction Control Line before building anything new on the beach side.

Who issues the permit for a pool heater in Nokomis?

For most Nokomis addresses, Sarasota County, because Nokomis is unincorporated. Gulf-front construction seaward of the Coastal Construction Control Line can also need authorization from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Do I need both a heat pump and a gas heater?

Usually not. A properly sized heat pump handles most pools on its own. Gas earns its place if you have a spa you want hot quickly, or you only heat the pool occasionally and want it warm the same day.

My equipment took water in 2024. Should I replace it or raise it?

The two questions are best answered together. If the heater, pump or controls were submerged, it's worth testing what survived before replacing everything, and if the pad is low, raising it while the equipment is being reworked is simpler than coming back to do it later. FEMA's guidance is to elevate outdoor equipment as high as practical.
