Modern Pool Heating

Pool Heating in Lakewood Ranch, FL

Solar, heat pumps and gas heaters for a master-planned community that spans two counties, where design review and newer construction shape the job.

For a Lakewood Ranch pool the choice usually comes down to solar, a heat pump, or both, and the roof decides more than the pool does. With a south-facing plane in good sun, solar is one of Florida's lowest-operating-cost methods. Without one, or if you want a set temperature on cloudy weeks too, a heat pump is the dependable choice, and the two work well together.

Lakewood Ranch is a master-planned community of more than 35,000 acres east of I-75, running from State Road 64 in Manatee County south to Fruitville Road in Sarasota County. The old Schroeder-Manatee Ranch turned to community development in 1994 and builders are still active, so much of the housing is relatively new, and the community runs through community development districts and homeowners associations. In practice that means exterior changes like collectors on the roof often go through a review before they go up.

We've installed solar on a Lakewood Ranch shingle roof: two arrays on adjoining roof planes, plumbed with dark supply and return lines that blend in with the brown shingle instead of standing out against it. And because the community crosses the county line, whether your permit comes from Manatee County or Sarasota County depends on which side of it you live.

Best heating choices for pools in Lakewood Ranch

Here the decision usually turns on which way the roof faces, what your HOA will want to see, and how much of the year you plan to swim.

Solar pool heating

You have a roof plane facing south, or within about 45 degrees of south, with little shade. Collectors on a newer shingle roof are the simplest install, and dark plumbing, like on our Lakewood Ranch job, helps the system blend in with the roof.

Electric heat pump

The roof faces the wrong way or is shaded, or you want the pool held at a set temperature through cloudy spells and cold fronts. Heat pumps are one of the lowest-cost powered methods; confirm the electrical panel has room for the dedicated circuit one needs before you choose a model.

Solar and a heat pump together

You want a long swimming season with low running costs. Solar carries the sunny days, so the heat pump only has to run when the sun can't keep up.

Gas heater for an attached spa

You use the spa often and want it hot quickly, which gas does better than a heat pump. Check what fuel reaches your address first; if it's propane, the tank's location may be one more item for design review.

What's different about heating a pool in Lakewood Ranch

HOA review and Florida's solar law

If your village has an HOA or design review, submit before any work starts. Florida law limits what that review can do with solar. Under section 163.04 of the Florida Statutes, a deed restriction, covenant or association can't prohibit solar collectors on your roof. It can decide where on the roof they go, but only within an orientation to the south or within 45 degrees east or west of due south, and only if that doesn't impair the collectors' effective operation. Appearance, plumbing color and equipment screening are all fair questions for a review board.

Two counties, two permit offices

Lakewood Ranch sits in southern Manatee County and extends into Sarasota County. The building permit for a heater, a solar system or a new pad comes from the county your home is in, and each county runs its own permitting. It's an easy detail to get wrong when the address just says Lakewood Ranch.

Newer roofs suit solar

With community development starting in 1994 and homes still being built, many roofs here have years of life ahead of them, which is what you want under collectors. If your roof is close to replacement, do the roof first; taking collectors off and putting them back for a re-roof is extra labor you can avoid. Shingle is the simplest roof to mount on, while tile and metal need different attachment and flashing details.

Heat pumps need open air, not just a pad

A heat pump pulls a large volume of air across its coil and blows it out colder. GulfStream's installation manual warns against overhangs and enclosed spaces that make the unit recirculate that cold air, which costs capacity. On a side-yard pad between two houses, or tucked against the pool cage, check that the spot has open air above and around it, not just room for the cabinet.

Natural gas or propane

Natural gas is a piped utility and service varies by street. The Florida Public Service Commission's statewide map notes that utility service areas are approximations and that you should confirm with the utility itself. With no main at your street, gas means propane: a tank, a delivery arrangement and possibly a design-review question about where the tank sits and how it's screened.

Pool repair & service
“After multiple attempts, and money, to figure out why our pool lights weren't working, Henry was the only servicer who correctly diagnosed the problem and addressed the issues. We did ultimately replace the fixtures and Henry provided the most competitive, and upfront, estimate as to the charge for parts and labor. He completed the repair, cleaned up any debris and dirt, and, unlike our experience with other companies, made certain everything was working properly. Would highly recommend.”

Lakewood Ranch pool heating questions

Do you install and service pool heaters in Lakewood Ranch?

Yes, on both the Manatee and Sarasota sides. Lakewood Ranch is within the area we cover across Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County. We install and repair solar, heat pumps and gas heaters here, including equipment someone else installed, and one of our published solar installs is on a Lakewood Ranch shingle roof.

Can my HOA stop me from putting solar on my roof?

Not outright. Section 163.04 of the Florida Statutes says deed restrictions and associations can't prohibit solar collectors. They can choose where on the roof the collectors go, but only within south or 45 degrees either side of due south, and only if that choice doesn't impair how well they work. You still go through their review process, and questions like plumbing color are reasonable for them to ask.

Solar or a heat pump for a Lakewood Ranch pool?

If you have a good south-facing roof and you're comfortable with the pool tracking the weather, solar. If you want a set temperature when you decide to swim, a heat pump. If you want long seasons and low running costs, both. We'd want to see the roof and the equipment pad before recommending one over the other.

Does it matter which county my house is in?

For the permit, yes. Lakewood Ranch spans Manatee and Sarasota counties, and the permit comes from the county your home is in. For choosing and sizing the equipment, it makes no difference.

Can a heat pump go inside the screened lanai?

It's usually better outside it. A heat pump needs open air above and around it so it doesn't re-breathe its own cold exhaust, and GulfStream's manual warns against overhangs and enclosed spots for exactly that reason. A pad just outside the cage, with a short plumbing run back to the filter, is often the answer.
