Pool Heating on Siesta Key, FL
Heat pumps, solar and gas heaters for a barrier island, where salt air, flood elevation and tight equipment pads shape the job more than the brand on the cabinet.
For most Siesta Key pools that get regular use, a heat pump with a titanium heat exchanger is the right primary heater, sited out of direct salt spray and set high enough that storm water doesn't reach it. Solar can carry a lot of the load where the roof faces south, and gas earns its place mainly for a spa or a pool that only needs heat on short notice. What changes on the key is less the equipment than how it's installed.
Siesta Key is a barrier island between Roberts Bay and the Gulf. Most of it is unincorporated Sarasota County, but part of the island sits inside the City of Sarasota, which matters when it's time to pull a permit. The National Hurricane Center puts Hurricane Milton's October 2024 landfall on Siesta Key itself, a fair reminder of why equipment height deserves as much attention here as heater size.
We installed a GulfStream HE150-RA on Siesta Key beside a Pentair automation panel, filter and pump in a tight equipment area, and our gallery has another island job where the homeowner wanted his equipment lifted off the ground, so the heat pump went onto a wall-mounted platform. Between them they show what island pads tend to ask for: little spare room, constant salt exposure and a good reason to think about height.
Best heating choices for pools in Siesta Key
On the key, choose the heater for how you swim, then specify it for salt and water. Corrosion-resistant materials and equipment height matter more here than on an inland lot.
Electric heat pump with a titanium heat exchanger
You swim most weeks from fall through spring and want the pool held at a steady temperature. Pick a unit with a titanium exchanger and a cabinet that can't rust, put it on the side of the house away from the Gulf wind, and if the pad already carries automation, plan the plumbing and control wiring before the unit arrives.
Solar pool heating
Your roof has a plane facing south or close to it, without heavy shade from palms or the house next door. Solar is one of Florida's lowest-operating-cost methods when the home has suitable roof orientation and sun exposure, and collectors on the roof are the one part of the system that sits well above storm water.
Gas heater for a spa or occasional heating
You want a spa hot within the hour, or the house is a rental or second home and the pool is heated only for stays. On the key, pay for a cupro-nickel heat exchanger rather than plain copper, and find out whether your street has natural gas or whether gas means a propane tank on a small lot.
Heat pump and solar together
You want long seasons with low running costs. Solar does the work on sunny days, and the heat pump covers cloudy stretches and the cold fronts that come through in winter.
What's different about heating a pool in Siesta Key
Salt spray and where the heater goes
Hayward's heat pump manual tells installers that in an oceanfront area the unit should be placed out of direct spray of sand and salt, which will clog, damage and corrode it, and suggests a physical barrier outside the minimum clearances on the side facing the prevailing beach wind. On Siesta Key that usually points to the landward side of the house, behind a wall or planting, with the airflow clearances still respected. Titanium exchangers are standard on current heat pumps; on a gas heater, cupro-nickel is the material to ask for.
Keep sprinkler mist off the cabinet
Hayward also warns that many sprinkler systems run on well water high in minerals, sulfur and salt, and that heads should sit far enough from a heat pump that normal wind won't carry the mist onto it. With salt already in the air on the island, irrigation is the one source of corrosion that's easy to move.
Flood elevation and equipment height
Look up your lot on FEMA's Flood Map Service Center before planning a new pad. FEMA's guidance on protecting home utilities says outdoor equipment can be raised on a platform attached to the side of the house, and for outdoor condensing units it prefers a cantilevered platform over one on posts, because flood-borne debris can damage posts and scour can undermine them. The Siesta Key elevation job in our gallery puts the heat pump on a wall-mounted platform. Whatever the height, the heat pump still needs open air around it, and the plumbing and electrical have to follow it up.
Gulf-front lots and the coastal construction line
If your property fronts the Gulf, check where the work would sit relative to the state's Coastal Construction Control Line. Under section 161.053 of the Florida Statutes, construction or excavation seaward of that line generally needs authorization from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, separate from the building permit. If a new pad will go anywhere on the beach side of the house, check DEP's map before anyone pours concrete.
City or county permit
Most of Siesta Key is unincorporated Sarasota County, but part of the island lies within the City of Sarasota. The permit for a heater or a new pad comes from whichever government your address falls under, so it's worth confirming before the work is scheduled.
Tight pads and shared automation
When the space beside the house is narrow and the pad already carries a filter, pump and automation panel, the heat pump has to fit around them. On our HE150-RA job the heat pump sits beside the filter and pump, under a wall-mounted Pentair automation panel, and the plumbing threads between components. GulfStream's installation manual warns against overhangs and enclosed spots that make a heat pump re-breathe its own cold discharge air, which rules out some of the tempting corners.

“After multiple attempts, and money, to figure out why our pool lights weren't working, Henry was the only servicer who correctly diagnosed the problem and addressed the issues. We did ultimately replace the fixtures and Henry provided the most competitive, and upfront, estimate as to the charge for parts and labor. He completed the repair, cleaned up any debris and dirt, and, unlike our experience with other companies, made certain everything was working properly. Would highly recommend.”
Siesta Key pool heating questions
Do you install and service pool heaters on Siesta Key?
Yes. Siesta Key is part of the area we cover across Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte & Pinellas County. We install, replace and repair heat pumps, solar pool heating and gas heaters on the key, including equipment someone else installed. Our published work on the island includes a GulfStream HE150-RA heat pump and an equipment-elevation job.
What's the best pool heater for a house on Siesta Key?
For a pool that gets used most weeks, a heat pump with a titanium heat exchanger, placed out of direct salt spray. Add solar if the roof has good southern sun, and consider gas if you want a spa hot quickly or only heat the pool now and then. On the key, where the equipment goes and how high it sits are as important as which heater you buy.
Should I raise my pool equipment after Hurricane Milton?
It's worth a look, especially if your pad sits low or took water. FEMA's guidance is to elevate outdoor equipment as high as practical, and it describes platforms attached to the side of the house as one way to do it. We put a heat pump on a wall-mounted platform for a Siesta Key homeowner; that project's published price range was $4,500 to $6,500. What it costs on your property depends on the equipment, the height and the plumbing and electrical that have to move with it.
Will the salt air ruin a new heater?
It shortens the life of the wrong equipment. Current heat pumps from the major manufacturers use titanium heat exchangers, and the GulfStream HE150-RA we installed on the key has a UV-stabilized ABS cabinet that can't rust. On a gas heater, ask for cupro-nickel. Placement matters as much as materials: out of direct spray, away from sprinkler mist, with room to rinse the coil.
Is natural gas available on Siesta Key?
That depends on the street. Natural gas is a piped utility, and the Florida Public Service Commission's own statewide map says utility service areas are approximations and to check with the utility. With no main at your street, gas means propane, which on a small island lot also means finding a safe, legal spot for the tank.
Who issues the permit for a pool heater on Siesta Key?
Sarasota County for most addresses, or the City of Sarasota for the part of the island inside city limits. On a Gulf-front lot, new construction or excavation seaward of the state's Coastal Construction Control Line can also need authorization from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
